White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

Same issue here since V26. So far support has only come up with great ideas like shutting down MSI Afterburner and unplugging things.
With V27 I get random disconnects in some titles, like Dirt Rally 2.0 . The bandwidth over link is also reported as 600-something Mbps.

Seems to me this is an issue with USB and, considering some have reported the same problems for months, Oculus has no clue on how to fix it. Or maybe they don't care.

Same problem for me on iRacing. The whiteish bars can occur 5 mins into a game or 10 mins into a game. It's random. They start off quite light, then get more bright. turn the headset off and on again, relaunch the game, and it's fixed for a brief while, but then returns. Sometimes it doesn't return.

If I take the headset off my face, the sensor turns the display off. Then the lines disappear for a couple of mins. It's like it's overheating.

I just had this happen while using the Rift virtual desktop (not the quest app). I wasn't even doing anything complex, just some file browsing before starting a DCS World session.

Simply restarting Oculus link momentarily solves this display problem, so no need to unplug and re-plug the usb cord, which will end up damaging it, so often it has to be done.

When this problem occurs (so very often in Dirt Rally 2.0 as far as I'm concerned), the easiest way to get a "normal" display back is to :
- click on the home button of the right controller (it pauses the game and opens the Oculus link menu bar),
- choose "Disable Oculus link" and validate (you'll be moved in the virtual environment of the unconnected headset),
- choose "start Oculus link" (you'll be moved to the Oculus menu bar as after pressing the home button on the right controller),
- click on the game icon to return to the game.

It takes a few seconds, but it's still painful because it have to be done quite often.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work for DCS World. Once the Quest loses connection, the game locks up and it can't be resumed. Only restarting the game will allow the Quest to hook back into it.

This has been happening to me on Dirt Rally 2.0 since I purchased the Quest 2. I have tried multiple Official Link cables and 2 others from Amazon. Also, replaced the whole headset and the new one had the same issue immediately. Different ports. A Stan alone USB C card and it doesn't stop happening. Doest happen on IRacing or Automobilista 2. Can someone from Oculus give us some idea of what is wrong? This is ridiculous. I have to use my Rift S to play Dirt Rally 2.0.

Same issue here. Happens primarily on Dirt Rally 2.0, occasionally on Oculus Home and other games.
Before I had a MSI Z390. I've recently switched to a Z590. I noticed a lower USB speed test (by 200mbps) and this stripe problem happens even sooner than before.

Fix that worked for me below - hope it works for everyone.

So I've not had this problem until a couple of days ago after a series of GPU driver, Windows, Quest 2 etc updates. Played MSFS and had the dreaded transparent white bottom third, same with my simracing games.

What I have done today is this.

- Q2 headset on and enabled Oculus link.

- On PC, gone into 'Settings' option in Oculus App (the one that always opens up when you connect the headset)

- In the Beta option I had 'Public Test Channel' enabled

- On Disabling it, the app then went into a 'Downloading Update' process, appeared to be 9 items

- That took a minute or two only, nothing apparent happening on the headset itself however

- Once the process was completed, I rebooted MSFS, went VR and.....

- No white stripe anymore!!!

I've checked my simracing titles and again, no white stripe.

So for me it looks like an Oculus Beta Setting issue only.

No idea if this is a universal fix or not, I so hope it is as we all deserve great VR after the last 12 months!!

My GPU is a 3080 btw.

Fingers crossed y'all

So you are running it with Beta off? From what I understand that is V27 which is having frame rate issues. Having Beta on at this point is V28. I will give this a try though. Thank you.

Yes running with Beta off, V27.0

Once I disbled Beta it kicked off the 9 item update, presumably reverting back to v27 which resolved the white stripe issue.

Not had serious framerate issues with MSFS, ACC, DCS unless I go Ultra crazy of course...

Thank you. I will try this tonight.
