Question

MEta quest link app does not work

I am losing my mind.

i can't use my headset because the ocuylus app has to update each time i use it, and this time it has completely stopped working.

it started with the app just dissappearing without removing the desktop and start menu shortcuts. i then tried to install it again, and it started, but it says it can.t connect to meta quest servers or something. when i press repair, it fails, and ends up uninstalled again.

I have tried several times to install the app, reinstall it, repair it, nothing works.

please just let me use my headset without your stupid app, i beg you.....

Also, since i have the original rift, i can't contact support, because my serial number is not recognised.....

Yep, they only recognize Quest serials, womp womp(I have a Rift S, been there). You can get around this by framing your request for support in a different manner, just say you're having a problem with an app or request a refund for something or any one of the non-rift specific means of getting them on the horn that doesn't require the input of a serial number. I could be more specific and tell you the many ways I've had to do this in the past, but thankfully it's been so long that I can't remember exactly which methods were 100% successful every time.

Imo, it's not necessarily a bad thing that you aren't able to contact meta support, I can say with honesty that they never, not even one time were able to solve a single one of my problems, and they handled each issue in the worst possible way each time. I once had a ticket open for over a year which ended with no resolution, the entire time they doggedly attempted to close the ticket and would have done so had I not maintained a vigilant eye on my email inbox for their "do you still need assistance?" messages. If you do have the unfortunate experience of having to speak with these support agents, just remember, if they don't ask you for the logs, they do not actually intend to help you, trust me on this. The logs contain everything you need to know about why this failed or that is broken, the logs log literally everything on your computer, and yes, they contain private information, so make sure that they only get sent to only where they absolutely must be sent in order to resolve the issues you're having. Either to Meta directly via their support file share protocol(which will probably be too small(50mb, I believe) for you to include all of the logs, which means you'll have to create a custom zipfile of only the logs you believe to contain the most relevant information, this is Meta in a nutshell), or to someone you know who is very, very computer savvy that you trust implicitly, and in that case, I'd recommend you still peruse the logs(which will be a good thing for your understanding of them anyway) and redact any information that you perhaps wouldn't want to risk becoming public knowledge for whatever reason.

Yeah, I found the easiest way to contact them was to log in to this forum, find the meta support account, and send a message. The send message button disappears completely when you're not logged in, so I was a little confused by that, but when I managed to send a message, they transferred me over to mail pretty quickly after pretty much just confirming I'm not a dumbass.

As for the mail support and log files, I was told to just not bother replying to the automated messages, because the ticket would just be reopened when I answered them, but the log files are indeed way too big. The biggest problem is I got the file down to around 16mb, which is way below standard mail max size, and it's smaller than the around 20mb I got in response from their mail server was the max size, but that would still not go through, so I'm currently waiting for a time I have the willpower to sort through the giant log files so I can send it in chunks.

    Unfortunately I don't have a tech-savvy friend, because I'm the most tech-savvy person I know lol.

Question, are you on Windows 10 or Windows 11?

I'm on windows 11, I don't actually think I've tried the app after upgrading from windows 10, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Trust me when I tell you, Meta Quest Link will not work with Windows 11. No matter what you do or how hard you try, despite whatever Meta says, the app will absolutely never complete installation on a machine running Windows 11, it will always fail. There are goofy workarounds to try, but I was never able to execute any of them successfully to where the app both installed and retained functionality.

joinn1710  have you looked into the possibility of using ALVR software instead of the meta software?

How would that work? As I understand, that's for wireless headsets. The rift CV1 is wired only.

My Quest 3 was working great,  then the Meta Quest link did an update, and now it just spins,  and takes for ever to load.  once it does load,  I have a white meta symbol, with the room scale,  but can't find headset in MSFS, or steam.   I repaired the install, it works again,  then update comes, and wrecks it again.   I am using window 11, on a I9 14900 with GTX 4090 with 64 gig of ram.

What is going on with this thing,  I bought a new Meta link cable for 70+ dollars,  and it did nothing different to help...

I ended up dual booting Windows 10 on the windows 11 machine I couldn't get working, and that fixed everything. I have no idea why, but the meta link app and most likely any oculus/meta Headset will most likely only work on windows 10 for now, so I suggest doing the same thing I did, even though it's a pain in the ass, because it's still easier than trying to get it working on windows 11...

This is the experience with quest 3 so yeah. It will not change, it's exactly like that using PC. The thing is - if you plan to use quest 3 with PC it's just a scam. You will have constant problems and nobody will help you.
