(Not Resolved) Known Issue - Quest PCVR streaming micro lags and stutter esp. when moving head

Hi team,

I'm getting micro lags and stutter in Airlink on my Quest 3 (EU/UK), esp. when moving my head. In the Oculus debug overlay this causes brief spikes in transmit/decode, fps drops and visible stuttering. The issue is not present on my Quest Pro with otherwise identical settings - see below screenshots to illustrate.

Few more details:
- Issue is not present on Quest Pro with same settings on HMD, router and PC (using same res)
- Issue is worse at higher bitrates, esp. >200mbps, but still present <200mbps
- Issue is unrelated to PC/game latencies (CPU, GPU, Queue each <5ms)
- Stutters/lags are intermittent (every 10-20 seconds) when not moving but happen immediately and reproducibly when moving the head to either side or especially looking downwards (i.e. on any bigger headset movements)
- Wifi 6E router (TP Link AXE75 EU/UK)
- EDIT: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 (EU/UK) wifi 6e router
- Connection shows as 2,400mbps
- Airlink codec H264 (but same on other codecs)
- I've attempted factory resetting, installing latest drivers
- Updated to v62 and latest Quest Link desktop version (I can see the 120hz option for my Q3)
- EDIT: Ordered a separate Quest 3 for testing: presents the exact same issue

-EDIT: Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

As the issue is worse the higher the bitrate and not present on Q Pro with otherwise same settings, I suspect it's related to the below known Wifi issues - but opening a new thread as instructed.

Best,
JensQ3QPro

Updates:
- Tried separate router: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 wifi 6e router
- Ordered a separate Quest 3: exact same issue on both routers

-Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for the information you've all provided.

If you have not already done so already, I would suggest reaching out to the support team via email so that they can gather a copy of your logs.

If you have already reached out to support and provided your logs, please PM MetaStoreHelp with your case number.

EDIT 8/5: Hey everyone! Just wanted to reach out and thank you all for your continued patience. If you're still having some issues, the best thing I can recommend at the time would be to submit a bug report. That way it can go straight to our engineers for them to further review everything provided. Thanks again!

With Air Link I suggest you avoid using h.264 codec.  Just set all your ODT settings to defaults/zeros except distortion = low.  Use your meta link pc app dashboard far left icon and set your bitrate to 200mbps Dynamic (not fixed).  If you have an AMD gpu you may need to lower this to 100-150mbps because they have slower encoders.  This automatically will set the codec to h.265 (hevc) and this will give you very good clarity.  Using the Dynamic bitrate should also help smooth out your stutters, esp. with Steam VR apps.  BTW, with SteamVR set your global visuals manually (not auto) to 100%.  You may be able to adjust these a bit using the per app option.

Also, I've found the Q3 really prefers wifi6 AX over AC.  With AC I get lots of disconnects.  Also, I haven't found any advantage of using 160mhz over 80mhz.

If you still get stutters, try lowering your graphics settings a little.  Good luck mate and cheers.

You can set ASW to disabled if you like and your PC can handle it (you have a pretty strong PC so I don't think you'll need asw).  It just doesn't seem to stick between restarts.

You can also use keyboard commands to change ASW settings on the fly (no restart required);

ctrl+num1 (numeric keyboard 1, not top row 1) = ASW off

ctrl+num2 = Forced 45fps which is actually forced to  1/2 your refresh rate fps with asw = off

ctrl+num3 = forced 1/2 with asw = on

ctrl+num4 = asw = auto (default)

With flight sims like msfs2020 I use 1/2 forced with asw = off (forced 45fps).  I use 80Hz refresh rate so this ends up giving me a nice smooth 40fps.  I don't like using asw because it tends to give me too many ugly artifacts, like wavy build windows.

Hope this helps mate and cheers.

I've been waiting for this issue to be resolved since March and couldn't play any pcvr games since then. I tried every setting on my router, freshly installed windows 10. It started to occur after the v62 update and still happening until v66. My only option without a stutter was using a link cable and that comes with a %20 performance loss for my pc that makes games unplayable without lowering my resolution to %80 or lower, at that point playing most of my games on Quest 3 with Quest game Optimizer has higher resolution and fps than my pc. Some demanding games run at 15 fps(72 fps using Virtual Desktop) due to Meta link software filling half of my vram. Since there is no regional pricing for my country I can hardly afford to buy games from the Quest Store so there is no way I can afford to rebuy my Steam games there.

I am also having the each same issue, I actually thought it was network congestion so I just dropped a bunch of money on a new wifi 7 Router.

I noticed when using airlink that games started lagging/stuttering. I also noticed that some games would get this wobble head effect at times and I would have to ride it out for about 10-15 seconds before it returned to normal.

My gaming machine is a 3090 with a 5950x cpu. It shouldn't be a factor in this and has previously played this games just fine.

That said, I have tried 3 different routers with varying levels of technology... so far this occurs on all of them. The only way to sorted solve it is to use the usb tether, but that is less than ideal. This also occurs in Virtual Desktop, SteamVR, and Oculus app. I have also noticed that I am unable to see any wifi network that is using 6ghz frequency. I am also unable to manually select wpa3 as a security protocol for wifi.

My guess is something is seriously wrong with the wifi drivers/setup on our headsets. Like I said previously, I have tried a wifi 6, 6e and 7 router all of them had the same issue, I have also performed 2 different factory resets, and none of these have worked.

You will be surprised, but this happens even in some native games. For example Asgard’s Wrath 2.

Seeing this has been an issue for about 4 months and no fix or even hint it was being fixed... I am guessing it won't be any time soon.

I mean I can't even get the 6ghz band to pickup anymore on mine and I am seeing others with this issue.

This device started off strong so I have purchased them for members of my household and extended family. I have been recommending it to friends, but if this is the meta experience I will no longer support this product. They have been trying to hard to toss our features to appeal to Apple users they have neglected the core of what makes a good headset

i feel the same way and not interested in them till they get there act together and get there product sorted either by a recall or offering some form of compensatioin for having to cope with this complete and utter lack of respect for its customers.

I am having  the same issues, thought i would upgrade my router to the new Asus rog rapture gt-be98(not just for quest 3 btw), bit  overkill you might say but surly it will fix the quest 3 stuttering issues 🤔 , how wrong i was/am .

Worse than ever now via steam link or Virtual desktop, before i had an ax88u router but beacause i had other devices needing the 5ghz band i thought this new be98 router would allow me to have one 5ghz band or even the 6ghz band for the quest itself, all the stuttering would be gone , much to my amazement they are worse than ever, cant play beatsabre on pcvr without major stuttering on 5ghz or 6ghz, half life alyx is playable but not great .

So ends my grief, im stuck between a rock and a hard place, is it the router or the quest 3, judging by posts here , quest 3 has an issue.

me too spent 200 on a new router to find out probem still exists so the E-CON-ENEMY has had over £700 off me on paper weights my old qust 2 worked fine using onbaord wireless at 1200mps every time good enough not to require ever getting a router upgrade my standered virgin mediai router could connect everytime at 800mbps to the quest 2 so i manly used wired to router and used my onboard wireless adapter soley for the quest 2 which was perfect could take my pc elswhere and still use vr . now i would have to trapes a router around with me but even thats useless and wired is just as bad sometimes it works sometimes it wont and it wont more often than it works . other day i tried a new cable with extra power adaptor running of the usb c off my front port which has fast charging and it worked flawlesly  today after an update it does not work anymore it works just as bad as my old cable so its not the cable either. and virtual desktop works everytime on wireless which tells me virtual desktop staff are more competant than the meta staff and should really step down and allow someone worthy to work on their sofware team like virtual desktop staff, even better make an agrement with virtual desktop to help them solve this prolem and suffer the humiliation of getting a third party to sort their own hardware out as good customer relations and excercise due diligence in getting this problem sorted spending over £700 for a paper weight is not acceptable and is robbery and fruad

Hey everyone! Just wanted to jump in here and let you know you're not talking in the void since it's been a little while. Our team is still currently investigating and I've been pushing for information, but I haven't been able to get anything.

Keep the updates coming though and I'll keep passing them up!

I will probably try once more, when the v66 comes out. But then that is it. Looks like Sony is giving PCVR a green light and if they manage to get adaptive triggers, eye tracking etc. working on PC I know where I will be putting my money.

Just got My quest 3 and I was using it via cable and that worked fine. First time I try it on air link it was completely unplayable. Threw my quest 2 on and tried the air link and that worked perfect. Both had been updated to V66.

Went nuts trying to figure it out until in the air link settings I turned the resolution down to the minimum and I could play fine. All that money for An upgraded headset and to use Airlink the visuals actually look worse than the quest two… Please fix soon.

Not counting my chickens yet but as of yesterday(12/06/2024) all my frame drops have disappeared for pcvr via VD, not tried steam vr as i dont use it, however beat saber is now playable currently at 90fps with no lag or stutter.

Can't say for sure what has fixed it for me (so far) as there were updates to steam vr (V 2.6) & VD (V 1.32.5) , also i hard reset my router at the same time as well as configured my mesh system to use WAN/LAN backhaul instead of wifi. Since all this , i now have totally smooth gameplay with no random 20-30 FPS frame drops.

**bleep**, this driving me crazy! I purchased Quest 3 especially to play PCVR wireless so i bought 2400mbps router with it and every time i move my head i get stuttering. The only setting that gets rid of stuttering was at 72fps. Even 80Hz creates a significant stuttering.

I tried to play directly through SteamVr software without installing anything from Oculus.

I blamed Steam at first but then i tried to play wireless.

I installed Oculus software to play by wire and manage to play Half-Life: Alyx at 90fps and dynamic resolution with no lags at all!

I started to blame my router so i bought more expensive model. At my despair, it did not fix anything! Then i kinda pushed to all in, and bought 250$ router because i did not know what else could be a problem. IT STILL JUST THE SAME as with previous two routers!

I thought that my item was defected but i can finally see that a lot of users have this problem.

My current PCVR experience is a dog**bleep**! I really love My Quest 3 but i can not enjoy what i bought it for. Please fix this issue, i did not want to sit with wire while i bought it to play wirelessly with a good router.

Routers that i tried: TPLink archer ax53, Asus ax57, Asus ax86u. I tried every possible combination of settings ac/ax, 80/160Hz, channel number but it wont matter! It is definitely not a router problem!

I have latest version on my headset and Oculus PC Software.

Been pulling my hair out with the quest 3 since i got it.really bad stuttering, went through everything then found i had the same isuue as what alot of people are reporting here.the quest 3 is unplayable accross wifi with Tenda AXE5700 router in 6e - (ax) mode.If i connect to 5ghz - (an) mode at 160htz bitrate is reduced from 2400 to around 1700 but the stutters are gone. There is some problem with the quest 3 and 6e (ax).I hope they look into this so i can connect it back up onto the superior 6e wifi
