(Not Resolved) Known Issue - Quest PCVR streaming micro lags and stutter esp. when moving head

Hi team,

I'm getting micro lags and stutter in Airlink on my Quest 3 (EU/UK), esp. when moving my head. In the Oculus debug overlay this causes brief spikes in transmit/decode, fps drops and visible stuttering. The issue is not present on my Quest Pro with otherwise identical settings - see below screenshots to illustrate.

Few more details:
- Issue is not present on Quest Pro with same settings on HMD, router and PC (using same res)
- Issue is worse at higher bitrates, esp. >200mbps, but still present <200mbps
- Issue is unrelated to PC/game latencies (CPU, GPU, Queue each <5ms)
- Stutters/lags are intermittent (every 10-20 seconds) when not moving but happen immediately and reproducibly when moving the head to either side or especially looking downwards (i.e. on any bigger headset movements)
- Wifi 6E router (TP Link AXE75 EU/UK)
- EDIT: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 (EU/UK) wifi 6e router
- Connection shows as 2,400mbps
- Airlink codec H264 (but same on other codecs)
- I've attempted factory resetting, installing latest drivers
- Updated to v62 and latest Quest Link desktop version (I can see the 120hz option for my Q3)
- EDIT: Ordered a separate Quest 3 for testing: presents the exact same issue

-EDIT: Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

As the issue is worse the higher the bitrate and not present on Q Pro with otherwise same settings, I suspect it's related to the below known Wifi issues - but opening a new thread as instructed.

Best,
JensQ3QPro

Updates:
- Tried separate router: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 wifi 6e router
- Ordered a separate Quest 3: exact same issue on both routers

-Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for the information you've all provided.

If you have not already done so already, I would suggest reaching out to the support team via email so that they can gather a copy of your logs.

If you have already reached out to support and provided your logs, please PM MetaStoreHelp with your case number.

EDIT 8/5: Hey everyone! Just wanted to reach out and thank you all for your continued patience. If you're still having some issues, the best thing I can recommend at the time would be to submit a bug report. That way it can go straight to our engineers for them to further review everything provided. Thanks again!

For me both LInk and airlink are unusuable unsupported features now. Now matter what I try I always get a blocky, blurry, stutter mess, with a 4090, a 5800x3d, and an wifi 6e dedicated connection. Meanwhile Virtual Desktop is almost flawless.

  • A short description of your specific issues with AirLink stutters:
  • Dont use airlink, however both virtual desktop & steamlink have microstutters
  • Device Type (e.g. Quest 2, Quest 3):
  • Quest 3
  • Do you only experience issues in Airlink or also in Link with cable?:
  • Never tried Airlink or cable.
  • Software Version Meta Quest Mobile App:
  • 291.0.0.25.109
  • Software Version Meta Quest Headset:
  • v69.00576.352.641228209
  • Headset Runtime Version:
  • 69.0.0.570.355.641203395
  • Headset Firmware
  • V69
  • Troubleshooting you've completed/workarounds that've worked:
  • used a dedicated router for quest 3 only @ a constant 2401 Mbps, reduced bitrate in virtual desktop to <100 Mbps, still not perfect but now playable
My PC: CPU - Intel 12700k GPU - Nvidia 4070 ti Super Ram 32GB ddr4 @3200MT Network - Asus ROG Rapture GT-BE98 - 2.5Gbps to pc Asus RT-AX88U as dedicated access point Meta Quest 3 128GB connected via dedicated access point

I have the same issue on Quest 2. When using dynamic bitrate, there’s a noticeable drop in bitrate during micro-freezes (visible through the Oculus Link performance HUD). With a static bitrate, micro-freezes become more pronounced when exceeding 150/155 Mbps, but they don’t completely disappear until the bitrate is lowered below 60/70 Mbps. According to the detailed stats in the overlay, the only metric with high values is decoding. This issue became significantly noticeable on version v69. I’m using a dedicated ASUS AX55 router connected to the PC via cable. The problem intensifies specifically in games with active movement and appears less frequently in games like Beat Saber, where there’s no active movement around the room. Reinstalling software, drivers, and Windows does not help.

pc config: 4070, 5700x3d, 32gb ram

Hey, I got an email with your fix and was anticipating people reacting to it. Why did your fix/comment get deleted?

Probably because it did not actually fix anything and he realized only afterwards. I tried his method before with Sidequest and it did not help at all.

Sometimes we think we have the solution and want to tell everyone about it without really testing enough. I´ve done it before.

I just want my money back at this point. Ive given up on vr and making vr games but its been so long cause i hoped it would get fixed in a reasonable timeframe and now i cant even get a refund cause its been too long. Im never reccomending meta products ever again to anyone.

You mean in connection with CPU and GPU level limiting? You may as well ask ggodin on discord why Virtual Desktop has the limits set where they are, you will probably actually get an answer from that direction. There are good reasons for the CPU/CPU performance caps. Thermal and battery related.

A big issue are the choices made with regards to resource allocation on the Quest operating system. They have things now that run all the time and these things are not always efficient or necessary, especially in Link modes where you are basically wanting to tunnel over to a different environment entirely and you don't mind if the Quest OS is on hold while that's happening.

I’m in the same situation. With version V69 and using a Quest Link cable connection. While playing DCS, especially in multiplayer, there are micro-stutters that cause desynchronization with the edges of both eyes. To return to normal, I have to tap the headset twice to go back to the Quest main menu and re-enter Meta Link. It’s quite frustrating.

I'm having the same issue but on standalone. I need to temporarily turn off my headset and turn it back on for it to change.

People, do you really think that developers can't run OculusDebugTool and see encode/xfer/decode?!
How naive you are...
This problem is reproduced in 100 cases out of 100. Only those who are on the very first firmware - up to 57 - are lucky.
This is a deliberate policy of "Meta", we must buy mobile applications. The percentage of people playing on PC is negligible. We are not interesting to the company, and stop waiting for a solution to this problem - this is done on purpose.
Or, they have a saboteur from PICO.
I will be glad to be wrong

  • I think without PC VR they would no sell this many Quests. Air Link can work well, but has to many possible problems for now. These problems are not all caused by the Quest. They should include a PC analyzer / optimizer with the the Meta Link App for windows. This way problems like old drivers, slow Hardware, bad link quality and wrong settings could be solved. At the moment we have to spend hours with Google and try and error.

In that case, what's stopping you from giving everyone who wants 57 firmware, it had no critical problems, everything worked perfectly. I need a smooth green graph on WiFi. I don't scold the ordinary Meta workers, I think they themselves are ashamed of what's happening with Air Link.
