(Not Resolved) Known Issue - Quest PCVR streaming micro lags and stutter esp. when moving head

Hi team,

I'm getting micro lags and stutter in Airlink on my Quest 3 (EU/UK), esp. when moving my head. In the Oculus debug overlay this causes brief spikes in transmit/decode, fps drops and visible stuttering. The issue is not present on my Quest Pro with otherwise identical settings - see below screenshots to illustrate.

Few more details:
- Issue is not present on Quest Pro with same settings on HMD, router and PC (using same res)
- Issue is worse at higher bitrates, esp. >200mbps, but still present <200mbps
- Issue is unrelated to PC/game latencies (CPU, GPU, Queue each <5ms)
- Stutters/lags are intermittent (every 10-20 seconds) when not moving but happen immediately and reproducibly when moving the head to either side or especially looking downwards (i.e. on any bigger headset movements)
- Wifi 6E router (TP Link AXE75 EU/UK)
- EDIT: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 (EU/UK) wifi 6e router
- Connection shows as 2,400mbps
- Airlink codec H264 (but same on other codecs)
- I've attempted factory resetting, installing latest drivers
- Updated to v62 and latest Quest Link desktop version (I can see the 120hz option for my Q3)
- EDIT: Ordered a separate Quest 3 for testing: presents the exact same issue

-EDIT: Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

As the issue is worse the higher the bitrate and not present on Q Pro with otherwise same settings, I suspect it's related to the below known Wifi issues - but opening a new thread as instructed.

Best,
JensQ3QPro

Updates:
- Tried separate router: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 wifi 6e router
- Ordered a separate Quest 3: exact same issue on both routers

-Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for the information you've all provided.

If you have not already done so already, I would suggest reaching out to the support team via email so that they can gather a copy of your logs.

If you have already reached out to support and provided your logs, please PM MetaStoreHelp with your case number.

EDIT 8/5: Hey everyone! Just wanted to reach out and thank you all for your continued patience. If you're still having some issues, the best thing I can recommend at the time would be to submit a bug report. That way it can go straight to our engineers for them to further review everything provided. Thanks again!

One other thought and I'm new to VR but I disabled PEMT precision event memory timer on my computer once and had no latency with any game.   Do you have that option?  and I'm not advising you do that,  as it could not be safe to do.   But am curious.

I'll be hacking some vents into the Quest3 where XR2 heatsink exhaust exits and where the intake fan can get some fresh air as the issue appears to be temperature related throttling. My warranty is over and I really feel the issues manifesting are from throttling / TDP limits decoding the data stream. Will post back here if successful.

so i haven't used it for like 8 months because i was frustrated by the lags provided by using wireless PCVR. I totally dropped out this gadget but decided to try some fitness in VR in hope that they have fixed something.

Unfortunately, the lags are just the same. Sometimes it lags when i move my head but sometimes it just stutters in games like Beat Saber which totally breaks all of the immersion.

Meta Quest 3 is one of my worst disappointment gadget i ever head. I really love VR possibilities and PCVR enhances it a lot while it is very laggy and inconsistent.

P.S. i have tried it with 3 different good routers and it is just the same...

Tried PrismXR Puppis S1, thought connecting via USB would change something, but no miracle happened, works the same as my ASUS RT-AX82U in ax, i.e. with noticeable lags, but unlike the asus, which can be switched to ac mode and almost get rid of lags, you can't do this with this one, it only works in ax - returned it. Now I can confidently say that there is no router that would not have problems during streaming to the quest, this is the problem of the quest itself and it has not been solved yet and is not going to be solved.

Hi. Look how long this thread is :-) And lately I've been getting what I suspect are the same micro lags and stuttering referred to here. They were so bad I thought the headset was failing, a loose component or something.

I have taken to rebooting the PC and the headset multiple times and eventually the stuttering seems to stop. So, I think it is software at this point.

I might try to mess with the settings but (as so many people post) "it used to work" which leads me to believe it isn't my headset, PC, graphics card, router, etc.

I use airlink constantly and it's been fine for a long time now. The only thing I can really complain about is in the first few months after initial release, we used to be able to push it far past the default 200mbps maximums (650 - 900mbps) and we can't really push much past that as effectively anymore. I suspect the headset itself has more overhead in the OS than it started out with.

6ghz wifi gives theoretical advantages in speed and stability, but in reality its only real benefit is that you're less likely to overlap a neighbor's channel. You really need to be standing next to the router.

I don't know if this is still an issue, but 5ghz wifi6 had known stability problems so try disabling AX mode if you're running 5ghz and having stutters and lags.

An anecdotal report is not reality.  I've used Link for years, probably on the Quest, certainly on the Quest 2 and now on the Quest 3. Many people reporting issues here have used AirLink I'm certain. The problem is "it isn't working now".

If yesterday it finally works after several reboots and today it is shaking like crazy  again even after 4 reboots of the headset and PC it can't be a case of wifi6 or the distance to my router can it?

Customers have purchased headsets, the company mentions Link on their website and suggests that it is a way to connect to a PC. Did they mention having an engineering degree or purchasing 3 alternative routers for testing? Did they say anywhere what the settings should be?

It is a "toy" albeit a $300 tech toy. If my new car wouldn't start each morning I shouldn't have to experiment with alternative battery cables.

My guess is (at this point) that some software update magically solves the issue. We have seen issues come and go before.

I am going to try the cable again to see if it makes any difference. If it does my immediate issue is solved but the bigger issue remains.

I am playing assetto corsa using link cable. Gpu is 4090, cpu is 13900k, using h.264 @ 800 Mbps. Game benchmarks show 90 FPS. No matter what i do there is always a microstutter randomly even though i have enough free resources/play with lowest settings. With all the comments on the internet, looks lile quest3 is not for pcvr. I wish the dev team focuses on link cable/pcvr and fixes it. If it cant be fixed, meta should let us know so thay we can find alternatives from other vendors

I finally fixed this issue after 18 months by disabling/quitting the RGB program that controls my RAM RGB. I spent tens of hours troubleshooting trying every possible fix. I even bought a new 6E router. I hope this can help others find a potential program that causes the issue if that is the cause of the issue on their PCVR streaming stutter.
