Oculus link suddenly not working after months of seamless PCVR gaming.

[EDIT] : After updating to the newly released game ready drivers (496.13) through GeForce Experience, and, as gary.clark.54584 suggested, repairing the oculus client by running the setup file again, oculus link seems to be working. I'm unsure which of the two actually fixed it, or if any actually did and the fix actually came from some update the oculus developers did, but what I'm sure of is that Oculus Link is currently working for me. Will update again if new issues arise.

[ORIGINAL POST] :

I'm seriously out of ideas.

I bought my Quest 2 in early July, and it's been working wonderfully since. I've been plugging it into my PC with that approved Anker USB 3.0 cable, and I've had absolutely no issues with it. Most games run perfectly, such as Blade & Sorcery, H3VR, Beat Saber, Boneworks, etc.

However, since today, oculus link just doesn't want to work at all anymore. Here's the exact chain of actions I take and the reactions from the Quest 2 :

  1. I plug the USB 3.0 cable in the Quest 2.
  2. I put the headset over my eyes and click "allow" or whatever the positive answer is at the prompt about sharing files with the computer. (I've seen tutorials saying that pressing "deny" is the preferrable option. I've however been pressing "allow" since forever with no issues, and pressing "deny" didn't do anything different either.)
  3. I get to the Oculus Home and open the quick settings menu (pressing the clock/battery/notification icon block at the far left of the task bar). I'd like to mention that prior to opening the settings, I get the usual notification over the task bar that oculus link is available in the settings.
  4. I click on the large "oculus link" block next to the Wi-Fi and Guardian ones of the same size.
  5. Screen turns black, the three dots loading loop appears to indicate that it's loading.
  6. The 3D Oculus logo appears in front of me.
  7. I see the infinite white grid-patterned link area, but only for a split second before the screen goes black again.
  8. After a short while, the 3D Oculus logo appears once more, again succeeded by a peek of the grid-pattern area, only to turn black again.
  9. Steps 7 and 8 are repeated in a loop endlessly, until I unplug the cable from my headset, thus breaking the Oculus Link connection and being sent back to the Oculus Home.

Usually, I go through steps 1 to 7 and once I'm in the white grid area, I can just select my monitor and mess around with SteamVR. The issue here is obviously that it doesn't last for more than a second before turning black again in a loop.

I feel like I tried every solution available, and yet absolutely nothing gave me the slightest inch of progress. Here's everything I've tried :

  • Rebooting computer
  • Rebooting Quest 2
  • Restoring Quest 2 to factory settings (complete reset by holding the power and volume-down buttons)
  • Reinstalling the Oculus App on my PC.
  • Updating my graphics card drivers to the latest ones through GeForce Experience.
  • Going back to a previous Graphics Card drivers version.
  • Rebooting router and modem.
  • Deleting the Quest 2 device entry on the Oculus desktop app, and adding it again.
  • Rebooting the Oculus software through the "beta" tab in the settings of the desktop app.
  • Trying Oculus Air Link instead of Oculus Link. This resulted in exactly the same results as with Oculus Link.
  • Verifying the cable connection through the Oculus desktop app in the devices tab. Results showed no issues.

I changed absolutely nothing in my computer that could've caused such an issue. The cable is in perfect condition, my headset is charged, no major updates of any software on my computer that could be even remotely related to Oculus Link has been made. I just don't know what to do at this point. I absolutely loved my previous VR sessions with my Quest 2 and would love to use it again, but this sudden Oculus Link issue makes my Steam games impossible to enjoy.

Here's my specs, in case anyone wants them :

Windows 10 x64

Intel Core i7-9700

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti (latest game ready drivers are 472.12)

16 GB RAM

If absolutely anyone encountered a similar issue and solved it, I would be most grateful if you would share the solution that worked for you.

Have a great day!

UPDATE - This morning, I was continuing to troubleshoot on my own, and after I ran C:\Program Files\Oculus\OculusSetup.exe and chose the repair option, my Oculus Link it working again.

It's really odd because I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Oculus software a few times with no success, but repairing seemed to fix my issues. I hope this might help others.

it's not normal that there are so many problems and your support offers no real solution that you're just wasting a lot of people's time. (and money).
I'm not going to reinstall everything just because your app doesn't do what it promises.
Repair and finish your job. If the problem still i will bye a HTC.

MetaStoreHelp Are you actually listening to everyone in this nearly year-old thread?? We have all tried everything you have ever suggested far before joining this support page and asking the actual owners of the product and software. The most common thing that hundreds of thousands of people from Reddit to YouTube on PCs link Quest 2  is that "it WAS working before". We are not all that new to troubleshooting clearly.
I've been trying to help my best friend who could only afford your headset but not one like The Index by Valve.  We have been through the wringer with your PC link software he can't wait to sell it and everything for it now. It seems like you Truly do not care about helping people. Because if you did you would get up from your desk or email your superior and get a team on this MASSIVE issue immediately!

Same here... Tried everything, usually by reinstalling everything and appying every fix, it works (for one session), but the moment I disconnect through the Interface at Quest 2, the issue comes back.

    Really frustrating.

    EDIT:

I think, I've managed to fix it... not sure what it did.

    1) Removed Quest 2 from Oculus app

    2) Installed the latest Studio Drivers for Nvidia

    3) Reinstalled Oculus app (Restarted the PC)

    4) Restored the settings at the Debug Tools at Oculus

    5) Signed up for Beta at Oculus

    6) Setup the Quest 2 again at Oculus

I did several restarts to see the issue would come back and so far, it looks ok.

Just sharing some info for anyone who was in the frustrating boat I was in. May or may not be totally related to OP's question:

I'm developing a Quest 2 app with Unity Engine on Windows 10. No matter what I tried, I could not get my computer to recognize my quest 2 as an android target to build to.

    Things I've tried:

    * Disabling and enabling developer mode in the quest

    * Making sure my developer account is authenticated (it is and has my valid phone number and credit card)

    * Running adb devices from commandline and it comes up blank.

    * Using Oculus Developer Hub > Connect A Device, but it never gets recognized there.

    * This is despite Oculus link appearing to work (it shows the rift menu inside the headset when connected),

    * Using different usb cables (The one I'm using now says it's compatible (Usb 3).

    * Installing the oculus go driver.

    * Using the Windows Oculus app's repair installation.

    * Uninstalling Oculus app from windows.

    * Checking my power usb settings to make sure they're not disabled on windows

Solution: Finally I toggled developer mode on on my wife's iphone (it's her quest so I wasn't able to do it from my phone) and now Unity is finally recognizing the quest as a build target.

For anyone struggling with the instructions, developer mode must be turned on in the MOBILE APP! Not just the website. Frustrating but relieved it finally works

Additionally, if anyone runs into "VrUSB isn't responding" I had to be signed into my wife's account on the Quest. She's the device owner and also the one whose iPhone app I enabled developer mode on. Only then would show me an additional promp "Allow USB debugging". After saying yes to this, both Oculus Devloper Hub and Unity recognize the device and unity is now building my app to it.

Same issue here. Link suddenly doesn't work and Air Link cannot connect either all of a sudden. Repair/reinstall didn't help

Same issue today here, oculus link working fine, both air link and with cable until oculus desktop PC software updated last night. Since it seems the quest 2 has major streaming issues. With the cable it crashes after maybe a few minutes, the weird infinite black bar things at the side and requires disconnecting the cable and restarting.

Air link connects, but around the same time, maybe 30 seconds or so, it gets major lag and is almost impossible to use.

I have tried disabling and enabling link, a quest 2 factory reset, reconnecting to wifi, rebooting / restarting oculus desktop software and headset at the same time and the result is always the same. I only use link to run the quest on some of my desktop games so this is a product breaking issue for me. In a last ditch attempt I am trying to repair the desktop app, but I feel something happened in last nights update on the desktop app that has broken link for me...

I have the same issue and it's driving me nuts. First time when I have installed Oculus client and connected via air link it worked but with terrible graphics and washed-out colors. Then I have ordered cable and it worked once and after that link just kept crashing. I have completely removed Oculus software and removed all the folders that I could find including all the registry key that mentioned oculus, rebooted and installed again. It started working for full 2 hours! It stopped again and it just won't start, air link doesn't work either!

Of course virtual desktop works without any issues but virtual desktop doesn't support streaming over cable.

I felt the  need to chime in here as I too had the same issue as the OP. My link cable was launching fine until yesterday evening when it then began to behave as the OP has mentioned. Trying Airlink had the same results. He clued me in when he mentioned the graphics card. I am using the AMD 6800XT with the AMD Adrenalin software. The problem was that AMD Adrenalin was recognizing the OculusClient.exe as a game. In the AMD Adrenalin software I right clicked on the Oculus Client and removed it. After that I was able to launch the link cable as normal. Easy fix - frustrating to find. Thanks to the OP for taking the time to get me in the right direction.
