Quest 3 controller battery recognition issues across multiple devices

Hi all,

We have recently started experiencing battery recognition issues with the controllers on approximately 15 Meta Quest 3 headsets. The issue appeared within the last month and seems to affect multiple devices around the same time, mainly only one of the 2 controllers/handles.

The controllers frequently do not recognize the batteries, even when using fresh/fully charged batteries.

So far, we have tried:

  • Following the recommended troubleshooting steps (https://www.meta.com/en-gb/help/quest/967070027432609/)
  • Factory resetting the headsets/controllers
  • Testing batteries from three different manufacturers
  • Wrapping the middle section of the battery in a layer of tissue to improve the fit/contact

Unfortunately, none of these solutions has worked consistently.

What is particularly strange is that wiggling/reseating the battery often makes the controller recognize it again. Once the controller is being used, the connection generally remains stable. However, after the controller has been put aside and picked up again later (e.g. after 10 minutes), the battery may no longer be recognized.

Since this issue appeared recently across a relatively large number of our Quest 3 devices, we are wondering whether a recent software/firmware update could have changed the battery detection or sensitivity.

Has anyone experienced something similar recently, particularly across multiple Quest 3 devices? Any suggestions or information on recent changes would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

If you wiggle the batteries and it makes them connect and disconnect, the batteries are loose. Some battery brands can be slightly smaller than standard. The other possibility is the spring loaded side gets depressed and isn't pushing against the battery. Try putting a piece of tin foil between the battery and the springy button to make a tighter fit, see if it works. I have heard this problem before, and it's usually loose batteries. Good luck!

If it doesn't work and you want to talk to a human support person at Meta, here's a good link.

If you are using rechargeable batteries, they are always slightly shorter that regular batteries and run at a lower voltage.

Also, as Maccyb132 said, the spring-loaded contact in the touch controllers can get jammed. See this post:

Battery can't touch battery contact in Quest 3s controller | Community

Personally, I use rechargeable Energizer Recharge 2000MAh AA batteries, they work great with the touch controllers. I used to use Duracell 2500MAh Rechargeable batteries, but they would charge inconsistently, overheat and the outer coating started peeling off. Not recommended.

Also, very important, the rechargeable battery contacts become dirty/oxidized with repeated use and need cleaning with a cotton swab and a little white vinegar or Isopropyl Alcohol.

But a reliable fix is putting a bit of aluminium foil between the battery contacts if the batteries are loose.
