Question

Quest doesn't download anything

I received an original Quest from a friend. Setup and installation were without any issues and worked fine. Then all of a sudden I wasn't able to install / download anything. I tried a few things and finally did a full factory reset but the problem persist.

Whether I try to start a download from the library or the store doesn't change anything. It briefly starts the download but after a few moments immediately goes back to the option do download the app. I can "buy" new (free or test) apps from the store without any problem, but as soon as I want to download them, I get stuck. Almost all 64 GBs are available. I noticed the problem first last weekend and it is the same on different WiFi networks and - as stated before - even after a full reset. Any ideas / tips, what can be done to resolve this? Due to the factory reset, I can't even use the apps I have  paid for / downloaded before...

    Just a short update from my side: Support has exchanged my headset and sent me a refurbished Quest 1, but the problem is the same with the refurbished one.

    good to know - it was already my  suspicion that not the device is the problem, but the account / meta infrastructure/backend.

    I found this thread to be interesting :

    https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Get-Help/Game-Downloads-keep-cancelling-themselves-on-Quest-3/m-p/1116440

    It concerns a Meta Quest 3 device but the problem was the same and it has been fixed for Quest 3 in 2023.

    Here, another user (me) having the same issue : https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Get-Help/Quest-1-Cannot-download-games-I-bought-Can-t-contact-...

    PS : I got a refund by contacting the support as I had an active subscription to an app. If you have active subscriptions to any application, you can ask for refund now.

    As a computer scientist, I'm begining to suspect Meta shuted down silently APIs or servers dedicated to download content on the Quest 1 (it's not the first time they shudently remove support for apps ou services without notice by pushing defective updates without fix or shuting down services, eg : Meta Quest Move app not tracing anything).

    I also tryed to examine the HTTP requests of the Meta Horizon "Install" button from the web interface without noticing internal errors but without success to install any app. I observed the app install queue was working but install queries are just skipped by the Meta Backend. I'm certain this raise errors in their backend logs.

    Also noticed the API rate limit is working from the quest 1 interface as if I try to install quickly all my apps from the Quest 1 UI I got "Retry" instead of install when it fails, so that means my Quest 1 headset can reach the internal Meta API, rate limit is working but install queries are not for Quest 1, this tends to support the hypothesis of Meta abandoning Quest 1 support by making the application download API incompatible with this headset.

    This si planned obscolescence, I'm f*ck**...

    This demonstrate the importance for offline and DRM free apps as for now, we can't download the APK we bought because of the DRM they contains and the proprietary way to download them,

    I did an experiment yesterday,

    I tried to sideload Virtual Desktop APK from the GitHub repo of its creator, and its updated version downloaded successfully through the Meta Quest Store!

    Unfortunately, this is the only application for which it worked.

    At least I could backup the latest version of Virtual Desktop APK for Quest 1 to use the Quest 1 as PC VR headset.

    Unfortunately, this method didn't work to update fitxr app to the latest compatible version for Quest 1.

    I noticed the APK seems to be signed, to that could mean if I get a signed APK of an app somewhere I could be able to recover my purchases as app updates may download so I may get the latest compatible version.

    Someone in this thread identified the issue we are encountering :

    By looking to his logs (spoiler feature doesn't work well on this forum, I had to bypass it to view the content so I repost them here) :

    I'm now shûre Meta is aware of the issue as its pretty easy to identify :

    "trying to download from a non-oculus hostname".

    Meta just did not maintained the meta quest store application in quest 1 and broke the download process. It's possible Meta internal API sent new unknown download URL maybe there is an hardcoded security into the quest 1 firmware.

    I get into my Oculus Quest system then uncompile /system/priv-app/OCMS/OCMS.apk and I found the following code is the problem :

    In decompiled APK, file sources\com\oculus\appmanager\installer\service\InstallerService.java

    if (HTTPS_CHANNEL.equals(A00.getScheme())) {
                        String host = A00.getHost();
                        String[] strArr = PUBLIC_CDN_HOST_NAMES;
                        int length = strArr.length;
                        int i2 = 0;
                        while (true) {
                            if (i2 < length) {
                                String str7 = strArr[i2];
                                if (host != null && host.endsWith(str7)) {
                                    break;
                                }
                                i2++;
                            } else if (SECURE_CDN_HOST_NAME.equals(A00.getHost())) {
                                String str8 = apkUpdateInfo2.accessToken;
                                if (str8 == null) {
                                    str8 = "";
                                }
                                A0F.put("Authorization", AnonymousClass008.A06("Bearer ", str8));
                            } else {
                                AnonymousClass0LP.A0T(TAG, "Authorization header not added because host name is not allowed, uri: %s", str6);
                                str4 = "Trying to download on from non-oculus hostname. Uri ";
                            }
                        }
                        if (C04780kz.A0N(mMobileConfig).A2e(MC.oculus_library.enable_traffic_tracing)) {
                            AnonymousClass0LP.A0G(TAG, "Adding tracer header.");
                            A0F.put(TRAFFIC_TRACE_ID_KEY, AnonymousClass008.A06("oculus_ocms:", AnonymousClass1Rv.A02()));
                        }
                        map = A0F.build();
                    } else {
                        AnonymousClass0LP.A0T(TAG, "Authorization header not added because request is insecure, uri: %s", str6);
                        str4 = "Trying to download on non-https with authorization. Uri ";
                    }
                    throw C04780kz.A0h(str4, str6);

    Based on my previous message above containing the log of the user who post the logs here is my final conclusion :

    Meta changed his CDN base URL http://securecdn.oculus.com/ by https://securecdn-ord5-2.oculus.com/ but did not updated the OCMS system app in the Quest 1. Meta is aware of this its impossible meta doesn't know this as they developped this firmware system app.

    Good news !

    I was able to download (and backup) my apps again, the Meta backend started working tonight.

    And the errors doesn't appear anymore on the logcat. So that sustain my initial discovery.

    Is it working for you ?

    i can't really believe it, but apparently it's like you tell and i could download apps within the first account again.

    i can even play kingspray VR in my oculus1 now, which till now was not compatible with that, at least as far as i can remember i needed at least oculus2 device for that.

    fantastic
