Quest Pro controllers jumpy / not tracking properly (a diary of my plight)

Final update: I had to factory reset my headset to get my controllers to track properly again. Unfortunately the headset OS updated and now the game I play, Breachers, crashes on startup on my Quest 2. That's me done with VR.

Trying to play some Breachers today, as is normal I have to restart my headset 5 or 6 times to get the Quest Pro controllers to track correctly with my Quest 2 headset, sometimes they stay in a static position and this seems to reset the connection to get it to work.

However today is especially worse, they randomly move their tracking positions about 4 inches every few seconds and then move back again, as you can imagine, if you're trying to aim a gun in VR it makes it pretty much impossible.

After about 45 minutes of repairing, restarting and restarting the headset I've given up and come to the forums to complain. It's so frustrating when you want to pick up your headset and play a game for 30 minutes but you have to fiddle around first, this time it was completely unresolvable.

Signing off with a bust controller.

Tracking wouldn't work, tried to unpair and repair but my option button had stopped working.

Tried to pop off the top to see if there was any dust blocking it, broke it.

The end.

I recorded a video of the controller jumping positions. Take a look at the right controller https://www.file.io/CWTe/download/hD4YUv9rs5pE

Here's an alternate upload where you can watch in the browser but I think the upload expires really quickly https://tmpfiles.org/dl/8658041/80c6362855d8458e8a0db7ef72f438b1.mp4

Here's an alternate upload that expires in 30 days https://easyupload.io/rb2tgn

Meta you need a way to attach videos to your posts.

This jump happens constantly

Here's an example this morning of the controller tracking being utterly useless https://easyupload.io/u908yf

I was also going to upload an example with the pass through behind the controllers but you can't seem to record the passthrough real world (I guess that makes sense) to show how the controllers track in a different position to where they are in the real world

Would rather solve publicly than privately. I also discovered if you move your hands to fast the controllers lose tracking. And if you really wave them super fast they just give up and only move round in a circle from a fixed point.

We definitely want to do everything that we can to help troubleshoot your controllers together! We happened to notice that you had another thread open, where we provided some information and asked you to try some troubleshooting steps. However, we never heard back from you there, so I am not sure if you were able to try these things. We will list the information again below. If you have already tried these things and they did not help, please let us know! We are more than happy to continue looking into this together.

  • Your area is well lit (avoid direct sunlight).
  • Your area is free of small lights (Christmas lights or LED strips).
  • Your area is free of reflective surfaces (mirrors, glass, or polished marble).
  • The tracking cameras are clean.

Additionally, you can try the following:

  • Remove third-party accessories that may affect tracking or controller detection.
    • For example, controller and headset covers, controller attachments, etc.
  • Remove the battery from the controller for 30 seconds.
  • Try replacing the battery with a new one.
  • Unpair and re-pair the controller to the headset.

Please let us know if this helps. Also, if you did any other troubleshooting outside of these steps, please let us know. We don't want to ask you to repeat anything unnecessarily. We hope to hear from you soon!

> Remove the battery from the controller for 30 seconds
These are Quest Pro controllers, please see the title of the ticket, they do not have removable batteries.

Tried to play Breachers today. The right controller kept drifting from its real world position, which was incredibly frustrating. Tried restarting the headset in the middle of 4 or 5 games to get it to start working properly. Gave up on the last game where instead of restarting the headset I held down the oculus button to try and repair it, but when it comes back to life it stays stuck on 2 out of 3 movement axises. I give up, thanks for another wasted hour.

We appreciate those details! As it seems we've exhausted all our controller troubleshooting steps and you attempted to factory reset the controllers, our last resort will be to factory reset the device. What this will do is reset the device to a "like-new" state, wiping all information and data off the device. Before performing a factory reset, you can backup your app data with cloud backup. When cloud backup is turned on, Meta backs up your device’s app data, like app progress or app settings, to the cloud, making it easy to pick up where you left off after a factory reset. Once Cloud Backup is enabled, ensure your device is fully charged, as this process may take some time. If you got any questions, let us know and we'll be happy to assist you!

Had 30 minutes today, thought I'd get in a quick game of breachers. Unfortuntely controller tracking did not want me to enjoy this time. Restarted the headset 5 times after issues started happening, but didn't manage to get one restart with accurate tracking.

Sometimes on boot up they would be off their real world position to the left or the right, other times they would move off position after a bit of time mid game. And other times it would be jumpy while at the same time smoothly move to a totally random position that's no where near my hand, as you can appreciate, this makes aiming a gun really hard.

We appreciate you getting back to us. You stated that you restarted your headset but did you do a factory reset? If not, the instructions are in the previous message and we suggest you try that. A factory reset is the end of our troubleshooting steps and we understand you wanting to handle this publicly but if you were wanting us to check on some additional options for you, we would love to get you to a PM. The instructions are below and we hope you have a wonderful day!

Tried again today, right controller was teleporting a few inches to the right and then back again.

I will try the nuclear option and factory reset, let's see how it goes...

The factory reset seemed to improve it. Only had issues about 1 out of 3 times.

That said, trying again today and the Pro controllers have started behaving wildly, they keep moving to about a meter in front of me and then locking in their position there. Issue happened while Breachers was loading a map, and now it seems to remember the bad position.

Do the controllers have some sort of history stored in them? So that when they get borked, they stay borked?

Reporting back. I've developed a six sense, never put your controllers on the floor while you go grab a battery pack, always put them on a chair or there's a 90% they will move about a meter above your head in the real world when you come back. But this time, I used the chair, I ran to get a battery pack, I came back for the clutch round of my match and the controllers were tracking a meter above my head, the only way to fix is to restart the headset. Instead I turned the headset off in defeat.

Logging back on to report that my controllers have stopped tracking again, restarted headset around 10 times, each time they would not track. So I've factory reset the headset again, and the controllers are tracking on the initial setup screen.

Why do they degrade over time? What is going on? Why do I need to periodically factory reset?

Back again to keep a diary of my amazing pro-ly crap controllers. This time they first lost tracking in game where the right controller moved about 6 inches above where it really is in the real world. This does make aiming a VR gun very hard. So in game I tried to restart the controller in the hopes it would magically work with that 1 in 100 chance. The gods were not shining on me this time, the controller got stuck rotating around a fixed point in space. Alas I had to exit from my very important VR game and restart the headset. Not once, not twice, but six times to try and get the controllers to track... but unfortunately I had to admit defeat and lay the headset down to rest/charge.

I will return with another factory reset and pray the gods are kind to me this time and a get a good amount of time before the controllers divulge to their demon tracking behaviour.
