(Resolved) Known Issue - V62/63 USB-C Debris/Water Warning

v62 has a big problem with USB port sensor (found the very same issue on my Q3 and the one of my wife)... when used with an extension cable (even if it is a quality cable) from time to time star showing the debris-water warning message. Of course there is no debris or water, just a nasty software false alarm.

Not a solution - Marking for visibility

Known Issue

Status: Fix rolling out in V64 - Public Release

Hey everyone! Back with another update. I got word from the team that we should start seeing improvements in the upcoming updates, however, they want to stray from promising any specific timeline for the fix just yet. I know everyone is still prepped for jumping back into their pop-up free VR experience, but this is the extent of information available to me at the moment. Hopefully I can find out and share more with you all soon! Thanks for remaining patient while the team works towards improvements!

Update (3/27/2024):

Hey everyone! After waiting patiently from the team for any updates I was able to share with you all, I just got confirmation that we should see a fix in the upcoming V64 build. I've tried to get word about a potential release for V64 & V64's PTC, but I haven't heard anything about it just yet. Be sure to keep an eye on the Announcements board, as that's the place we'll be posting about the PTC and Official releases.

If you continue to experience the error on a V64 build, please let me know! I'd also appreciate if you included your V64 software version number.

  • You can check in Quick Settings > Settings > Software Update under the Current Version Details section. The formatting should be 64.#.#.###.###.#########.

Update (4/5/2024):

Hey again! I'm glad to see that a lot of you are no longer having issues after the rollout of PTC's 64.0.0.419.370.583580230. After bringing more reports to our team, I was notified that the official fix hasn't shipped just yet, but it's a really good sign that improvements are being shown in the PTC builds! The official fix should be rolling out in the public release of the V64 build.

Thank you again for your patience, and please be on the lookout on our Blog or the Announcements board for when the public build is officially announced. Of course, I'll be notifying you all here as well once I find out more information!

Been having this problem and after reading through this thread I started trying reboot everything.  Have cable plugged in computer, once I log in I open quest software on pc, then connect cable to headset. Have not had any issues making sure headset is the last thing in the chain.

Weekly checking in for a fix... No news. No fix in sight. Ughh.

TheLegend27 just in case you are aware marking a post from two weeks ago as the solution.  Doesn't really mean anything.

If at any point you and the guys at meta feel like giving us a real update , please do. Otherwise we will all take it for what it really is, ramblings of a company who don't care .

What joke two weeks later and you still can even say anything meaningful.  Considering your supposed to be big tech , figured you be better at this.

I'm going to start reaching out to media outlets , tech journalists should really know about this useless expensive paperweight we have all paid for.

Everyone else, remember to tweet at your favourite media outlets, lets get some visibility on this because Meta clearly are not doing anything.

Been having this problem for weeks now. No sign of it going away. Headset is clean, no water or debris to be seen, yet this error appears any time I use link.

That can sure is getting kicked down the road nicely. Over 2 months and no solution. Great job, keep up the great work meta.

I'm a developer and engineer who builds embedded devices as part of my work.  I'm like 99% it's got nothing to do with the cables and ports and everything to do with power management / overclocking.

When they upped the devices recently to 120hz to keep pace with the competition they probably overclocked the device to keep the performance smooth.  Unfortunately as anyone who has ever overclocked a device too high will know, this can lead to instability including widespread power issues and heat issues. Just google "overclocking usb instability" to see hundreds of threads and articles on this.  Not only does my device have these usb issues (which I am sure is a power issue) but also it artifacts (graphical glitches) after a while when the fan is pumping out heat on the front of the device (even when I'm not doing much).  If you search the rest of this forum there is whole set of threads not being addressed to do with graphical artifacts in the recent updates. (just search this forum for "artifacts").

This is why they are not addressing it because they can't without dropping the overclock on the device and removing 120hz (in my opinion)

You nailed it  πŸ‘

Davilos fair point. Well maybe not specifically the 120hz feature, I was kind of just using that as an example of a feature that was sort of snuck in, but in v55 they started all the "performance enhancements" and all the more advanced hand and spacial tracking due to the threat of the vision pro (which takes more constant background processing power from an already constrained device).  The quest 3's hardware would have been finalised long long before this so they probably just decided to try and squeeze some extra performance out of it and deal with the fallout later. Since then the forums are full of people complaining about issues that are not being addressed that could potentially be due to power instability caused by running at a higher spec than it was originally designed to do.

Yeah that could definitely still be it, I just suspect that specifically the 120hz isn't to blame. This same overclocking issue happened on Quest Pro as well, specifically with the controllers. They would get tons of false warnings about overheating after a couple updates.

I've observed that this message appears even when using the original cable that came in the box. However, I've noticed that it only occurs when the battery of the power bank connected to the device is low or nearing depletion. I use a 20000mAh power bank with this device, and it functions properly until the power bank is about to die.

I haven’t been able to consistently replicate the error. It pops up suddenly, almost randomly. At the start of the session, in the middle of a race, after 90 minutes. My headset remains about 95% charged and is connected to a PC USB port that doesn’t supply enough power, so it has an alternative power source directly from an electrical outlet with the Quest 3’s factory charger.

This is the cable:

Well, they've closed my support request and marked it as closed....they want me to send my headset back (shipping labels arrived by seperate email with an incorrect address for me on them!)

Once returned the replacement typically takes 3 -5 business days to ship....it also states (not happy at all) that I may receive, as a replacement, a 'refurbished item'!!

What do you guys think?

I think that if you want a replacement for some other reason, go ahead and do it. If you want it to fix this problem though, it wont help. This problem became more widespread after a software update and the replacement unit will have it as well most likely as soon as you update it.

nice! so glad a media outlet has picked up how terrible this is for users, hopefully we start to see more. Love the headline πŸ˜„

"A Meta Quest 3 bug has made the headset unusable for many, but a fix is coming
But Meta is being vague on when the solution will arrive"

Still nothing will happen, meta has a free pass for literally everything...... Guess bricking a headset for 7 weeks without updates is totally ok, I mean imagine that...........
I just hope for some kind of compensation because this is absurd, and they should not pass lightly.......
