What Wifi 6e routers currently works bug free with the Quest 3?

Hi! Just wanted to post here to get a seperate thread going. As of today there is a major bug in communication between Quest 3 and certain types of Router models.

So let's get a list started on Wifi 6e routers that actually work. What Router do you have experience with being stable at 2400 Mbps in dedicated 6e mode?

Remember to post Router name and model and screen grabs/video from the Quest 3 showing the speed. (Turn on experimental wifi settings to do so.)

This is by no account a list that is for everyone. So far I found that some of the more expensive models between 350-700$/€ have been reported to work. So meta still has a major bug to fix. But if you can afford it, this might be is a way around the problem…

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

The bug explained:

There is a bug with negotiation rates with certain router models. Essentially AX and AXE models but more might also be affected. I have been investigating this bug since launch and finally both Meta and TP-Link have confirmed that the Quest3s negotiation protokolls with the routers is very unstable. This problem is totally unrelated to VD or AirPlay functionality, but it's here you'll notice the problem.

As of right now the Mbps can flux from approximately 1080 to 1900 on 6G and ocasinaly dip down below 800. Making it stutter and glitch in latency.

On 5G it will flux between 1080 and 420 Mbps making it essentially unusable in wireless PC streaming.

Both Meta and TP-Link are currently investigating the problem.

Meta has stated that the problem will be fixed with a firmware build in the near future.

If your experiencing this bug and want to follow its progress you can follow this seperate thread:

KobraKay87 on reddit has had success with Linksys Hydra Pro 6E Tri‑Band WiFi-6E-Mesh-Router

 https://www.amazon.com/Linksys-MR7500-Hydra-Tri-Band-Router/dp/B09DRDWXWF

His post and video on reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/17cy1yg/performance_metrics_for_the_all_in_quest_3/

First impressions after just upgrading to the 6Ghz router:

Maxed out all the settings in Virtual Desktop, absolutely no visual clue that the signal is being streamed via Wi-Fi. The only thing I notice, as someone who has exclusively played wired VR for the last 8 years, is the latency. I had hoped that the latency would be lower than with my 5Ghz router, but it's not really much of a difference. But I got used to it withing minutes.

The big upgrade is the visuals of course, with the 5Ghz router I could run the games at around half the bitrate with occasional hiccups. Now it's buttery smooth.

I'm using this router (Amazon Germany link, you should find it locally aswell): https://amzn.to/3QrBusc

Bandwith is now 3 times the amount of my 5Ghz router, which is a pretty big upgrade aswell. Wennt from 700 - 800 to 2400 - 2600.

I just sent my Asus TUF Ax6000 back which had random latency spikes and freezes and my Tenda AXE5700 router with 6ghz where the 6ghz band was not found and was fluctuating with the Mbps on the 6ghz (when it connected after 10 restarts and half an hour trying to connect) and on the 5Ghz band.
Now I just bought this Linksys Router to test if I can connect to this 6ghz band without a problem and if the connection is stable. If not there must be a ton of defective Wifi modules in the quests, because otherwise I can’t explain this phenomenon. I will write back when I tested the Linksys Router with my quest and if I can get the same performance as shown in the video. See ya!

Ps: There was another user in the other thread who bought the same router as Ruined . Maybe he can also report back if the router works flawless with his quest.

So here is an example of my average results with the
ASUS GT-AX11000 PRO ($319)

Note this is *not* a 6E router, but rather a high-end 6 router, and this works perfectly for Quest 3 at a price around $200 lower than a high end 6E router (like the GT-AXE16000). However, I am extremely pleased with the performance.  As you can see in this "Old Friend" video, on average latency end-to-end is 35-45ms, and is under 50ms 100% of the time, which is generally considered the benchmark.  While I don't have a 2nd video handy, playing HALF LIFE ALYX via SteamVR, I obtained even better results than with the "Old Friend" demo (which used Meta's PCVR protocol), with SteamVR's network latency being as low as 1ms at times, and rarely if ever exceeding 5ms.  At all times in both cases with "worst case scenario" movement, the link stays pegged at 2401mbps.

In the below video, I did a Quest 3 "torture test," which involved rapid squatting up and down (in beat with the music!), violent head shaking, and rapid arm movement, all at the same time as you can see from the video.  Despite this, which is a worse case scenario that exceeds what you do in real gameplay, I was unable to trip up the wifi in any significant way.

To achieve this, I used the tri-band GT-AX11000 PRO router, and manually set it so that Quest 3 had its own 5ghz radio & SSID (5ghz-2), set to 160mhz width starting with channel block 100, AX-only. This basically gives Quest the most bandwidth possible, and best chances of success, at the same link speed as 6E offers, but with the greater range of 5ghz; so I can also use Quest 3 in the room adjacent to the router through a wall without issue.  VD settings are as-pictured, which offer the highest possible quality currently available at 90hz. With this router, if you are not using a mesh you can also use Quest with 5ghz-1 starting at channel block 36 if it works better for your area (will depend on interference).

I'm using this zyxel access point and it works great for my quest 3.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HQQ4SPQ

I stream virtual desktop 200mbit solid and the virtual desktop status screen shows 2401 for the speed.  I only connect the quest 3 to this device and and within 20 feet from the access point.  I wasn't even aware of the bug.

Making a couple more tweaks to my network unrelated to Quest 3 since its working great, but I will report back if the changes cause issues.  Replacing two medium-range RT-AX86U mesh nodes that were relatively close to each other with a single long range GT-AX6000 between them, which should theoretically optimize handoffs while retaining range of of the RT-AX86U.  The RT-AX86U also has baked into its firmware older FCC limits for the lower 5ghz band that results in reduced transmission power, and the GT-AX6000 doesn't have this issue.

So then will be:

SSID1: 2.4G - Mesh GT-AX11000 PRO + GT-AX6000 (Auto)

SSID2: 5G-1 - Mesh GT-AX11000 PRO + GT-AX6000 (160mhz width / 2400MBPS/ ch36)

SSID3: 5G-2 - Quest 3-exclusive GT-AX11000 PRO (160mhz width / 2400MBPS / AX-only / ch100)

Hi.

First of all i'm not native speaker so sorry for my grammar. I hope You can understand me.

Looking for a suitable router for my quest 3, I have read a lot of your posts about the gt-ax6000 and last week I bought one. However, I have a problem. After configuration and setting the parameters in the wireless tab to the 5 GHz band, AX mode, channel band 160 MHz, channel 36, at first the WiFi works at 160 MHz, but after some time (some time 30 minutes, some time 3 hours), without making any changes to the WiFi settings, it automatically switches to the 80 MHz mode and changes canal.

Could You post or send me please what should I do to get solid and stable 5G 160 MHz?

Below I attached a photo of the settings (WΕ‚Δ…cz=ON; WyΕ‚Δ…cz=OFF; TAK=YES; NIE=NO) and a screenshots of the Wi-Fi Analyzer application (WiFi ROG5G)settingsWiFi (ROG5G) right after the settingsWiFi (ROG5G) after some tine from the settings

As promised I tested the MR7500. First of all - the Setup is ..... and took me 3 hours (on windows, I couldnΒ΄t click on "CA" to get access to the "complete WiFi-Settings - the CA-button was only showing up on my iPad (1h chat with support)" - second problem: I can only set max 80 MHz band width @ 6 GHz.

Now the test results:

1) Half Life Alyx with MR7500 (only 1200 MBps cause of 80 Mhz band width):

MBps is still varying - itΒ΄s not stable. Furthermore, there were some stutters which I actually noticed.

https://streamable.com/6tts2g

(MR7500)

On the other router I used before (Asus RT-AXE7800) the MBps were varying as well, but there was no stutter! So the Asus router worked better for me (even though the MBps varied - but I only noticed this when I looked at the VD overview - with the router there are "rarely" stutters.

(Asus RT 7800)

IΒ΄m looking forward to what BoltonHunter will find out.

Is what you found in your video only in one specific area of one specific game, or representative of how it is most of the time?

BTW, as an added note but worth stating again-

If you are able to use a Wifi6 5ghz 160mhz channel without interference (like in my case, I can use both of the channel blocks Quest 3 can receive with no issue), this is in most cases going to provide a better experience than a Wifi6e 6ghz 160mhz channel, because of the power and range limitations of wifi6e 6ghz and the fact that both are the same 2400mbps speed - unless you definitely won't roam more than a meter or two from the router, in which case they will be about the same.

The only time you'd make it a priority to use a wifi6e 6ghz 160mhz dedicated band over a 5ghz 160mhz dedicated band is if you have too much interference in your area to have a stable 5ghz 160mhz band.  Crowded apartment buildings, or interference living close to a weather station/military base are good examples of where 6e's 6ghz can be a true large advantage.

When Wifi7 is more supported (maybe quest4?), 6ghz will be more useful because in the Wifi7 spec they upped the 6ghz transmission power, and also upgraded the link speed to 4800mbps.

So, a lot of updates inbound.  Updated headset to v59, updated virtual desktop, updated router firmware, changed my mesh node to improve home performance of devices on 2.4ghz & 5ghz-1 SSID (that the Quest 3 does not use) ,etc.

I'm not sure what's caused it, but after doing all of the above, my performance has worsened.   I saw someone else say with v59 things got worse from v57, and perhaps that is the case.

Now, instead of 100% locked at 2400mbps, I would say its locked at 2400mbps about 90% of the time and drops to 2161mbps about 10% of the time.  Also, previously my network latency was on average 1-5ms, while now it is more like 3-9ms.
There is still no substantial hitching or anything like that, but objectively worse performance after all of the above.

The one area i noticed network latency tends to actually "spike" (like into yellow on VD, something real high) is during:

* Game loading

* Portions of games that try to autodetect your height (e.g. boneworks calibration at startup)

Wifi between 2.4 and 2.161 ghz is not a problem, a bug, or anything to be worried about. These are link speeds based on a lot of factors. The actual throughput isn't going to be this fast. Your PC on a gigabit wired connection is going to be a lot more stable for sustained transfer rates. There is no noticeable difference between 3-9ms fs 1-5ms. The differences you see may be related to other factors than v59. Could be lots of things such as what neighbors are doing, weather, etc.   There's no way that 2.4 dropping to 2.16 or even all the way to 1200 is limiting virtual desktop or air link 200mbit to 800mbit encode rates... And if your PC is connected via gigabit ethernet, like it should be....

v59 seemed to have done something bad.  With v57 it was *locked* at 2400mbps, and the latency pretty much never went over 5ms. Now the latency with v59 increased by about 2-3ms on average, and its dropping from 2400 - 2161 periodically; granted, 2161 is still super high, but it indicates along with the increased latency that something changed that made things worse.

I had ordered the router that Ruined has, to check whether it works as well for me as it does for him. (ASUS GT-AX11000 Pro)

Unfortunately I couldn't test it with the Quest 3 V57 because I got the V59 version a few days ago. The same goes for the small update to V59, which also arrived the day before yesterday. Even though I switched off automatic updates. Why? πŸ™„

As expensive as the router is, setting up the router in the browser was pleasant, convenient and fast. Outstanding. After I had connected the router to the pc, an asus tab opened in the browser with a menu in dark mode and quickly guided me through the setup.

After a few minutes of setting up, the router was in AP mode and the 5Ghz band dedicated for the Quest 3 was set up with 160Mhz on a free channel. (802.11ax/Wifi 6 mode and AX only)
With my other router, a Fritzbox 6660 Cable, I was able to check all the frequencies and channels in my area and then choose a free channel block for the 5Ghz band of the Asus router for me.
The other two bands of the Asus router, a 2.4Ghz and a second 5Ghz channel were switched off, so that only the band for the Quest was activated.
During the tests, the router stood 2-3 meters away from me without any objects in between.

The result was as follows:

Bandwidth:
The displayed bandwidth in the wifi menu of the Quest 3 showed that the bandwidth was not stable at 2400Mbit, but jumped to 2161Mbit from time to time and very rarely to 1900Mbit. The performance display in virtual deskop showed the same. Very similar to Ruined after he updated Quest 3 to v59! Before that, it was constantly running at 2400Mbit with v57 for him. I would also say it's about 80-90% on 2400Mbit for me. But it fluctuates. As I said, I couldn't test the v57 because I've had the v59 for a few days now. Is it possible to downgrade to v57? If so, I would test it again. Probably only with a hardware reset or?

Network time:
The network time in virtual desktop is 4-5ms most of the time. But sometimes it also fluctuates from 2-10ms! Sometimes the fluctuations do not occur at all for a longer period of time, sometimes they increase over a certain period of time.

Gaming experience:
The gaming experience is better than with my old router (TP-Link Archer AXE75 Wi-Fi 6E), which I had previously tested. There are no more strong stutters and fewer small stutters. But there are still small stutters. Mostly not when the bandwidth changes, but when the network time briefly jumps up to 10. This happens regardless of whether I'm moving around a lot or just standing still.

Conclusion:
The Quest 3 with v59 cannot maintain a stable wifi connection with the routers I tested. Even with a router with an extremely strong wifi signal, like the Asus GT-AX11000 Pro.
I bet that if I could have tested the router with the Quest 3 v57, I would have had the same good result that Ruined was able to describe with the router and v57 in the beginning. I will get in touch with him as soon as I find the time and compare the router settings.

When I previously tested the TP-Link Archer AXE75 Wi-Fi 6E router, I noticed that the Quest 3 had a more stable and better connection with v57 than with v59.

I have the 128GB version of the Quest 3. Next week I will get a 512GB version, which may be from the new batch, and will then test it with the Asus GT-AX11000 Pro.

By the way:
During writing this post i got 7 "Tell us what you think" popups from metaforum.
During reading the whole Thread in the last days i got over 30 "Tell us what you think" popups from metaforum.
At Support, please turn this off.
The popup keeps coming back even though I have already filled it in. I even filled it out again and was told at the end that I had already sent it. Nevertheless, the popup keeps coming back... again and again and again.

And please introduce a dark mode, please please.

yeh it seems this v59 update has definitely downgraded the experience from perfect to very good for me.  I am using a 512GB quest3, btw.  with v57 i got zero stutters, i did get one small one when playing earlier with v59.  Overall though still feels pretty good with no major hitching

The GT-AX11000 has such a large range of options to optimize latency, I wonder if any of these if turned on could make up for whatever Meta did with v59?  The really nice thing about the GT-AX11000 PRO is that it is an awesome router not just for gaming, but for your entire home network in general.

BTW, these BCM4912-based asus gaming routers that work well with Quest3, there are three of them:

GT-AX6000 - Wifi6, 2 band - 2.4ghz/5ghz

GT-AX11000 PRO - Wifi6, 3 band - 2.4ghz/5ghz-1/5ghz-2

GT-AXE16000 - Wifi6E, 4 band - 2.4ghz/5ghz-1/5ghz-2/6ghz

If you are going to use router just for quest 3 and not as a main router, the cheapest GT-AX6000 should do the job.  The next step up, 11000 PRO, allows you to have 2.4/5ghz bands for the rest of your devices, and an exclusive 5ghz for Quets3.  The last step, does all the 11000 PRO does, plus adds a 6ghz band for 6E - though it seems in testing the 5ghz bands of the AXE16000 dont have as much range as the ones in the 11000 PRO; maybe due to FCC power limits or something?

Ok Guys I tested my new Asus GT ax6000 and it is awesome !! Finally a good router with stable connection and good performance ! Great and easy setup with the settings Ruined mentioned it is perfect! But as Ruined said the v59 version is messing with the connection ! I have a stable 2401 Mbps for 10-15 min and occasionally it gowns down to 2160Mbps but not lower! So it is far better than any other router I tested. And now I can use pcvr without any lags and stutters! But I hope they fix this firmware issue because I think then it will be great on stable 2401Mbps. And compared to 6Ghz there is absolutely no difference and of course it finds the 5ghz instant. I couldn’t find the 6ghz bands with my quest, but now everything works fine! Thanks to Ruined  for the tips and settings. Applied all of them to my router! Greetings

Good to hear!  yeah i think the meta firmware still needs work, but these bcm4912 asus gaming routers are so robust you can get around the issues in the firmware with them!

Now the most important thing you need to do is decide what RGB pattern you want on the top of the router πŸ˜„

Ok, since I use it as an AP and only the data traffic to quest 3 runs through it, acceleration and priority settings would probably have no effect on me either I think. That's probably why this mode doesn't exist in AP mode.
