Are anybody using CryENGINE

Are anybody using CryENGINE 3? And why not?

With Unity you need to fork up 1500 to even be able to create anything usefull. With UDK you get a great tool and all features "for free", but it's not the latest one. But with CryENGINE you get a great tool and it is the latest one and it's just as "free" as the UDK - and it has native support for the Rift!

I've been looking at videos for the UDK and they are great. But wanted to try CryENGINE simply because it's been naggin me that the UDK is "not the latest thecnology". However, learning CryENGINE seem problematic as there is no good videos. Only how to do this and that, not a course as with UDK (for example from 3D Buzz).

Is this why people don't use CryENGINE? Because the documentation and course materials are lacking?

Last I heard Crytek are hurting bad. Probably not going to be a good pick if you're counting on support.
Rumors of being bought out by Wargaming, making their engine public (surprising if you ask me), release of a generic MMO war fighting game, an engine that demands from the GPU while delivering only a slightly ever-so-slightly better result... Crytek may actually be cryin'.

Would be nice to see and I'm not certain WHICH rumors are true but one thing I can say is thngs seem unusual over there this year; actually since the release of their last engine.

Maybe if they did have better support they wouldn't be in this deep. The main reason for not using CryENGINE is the lack of support - and of course VR ;) . Anyway, I hope this won't hurt Star Citizen. Other than that I wouldn't care less.

    I don't think you've seen this: http://vrfocus.com/archives/6288/hands-cryteks-vr-tech-demo/

They have shown full support at Gamescom 2014.

Here is a video of a german dude trying it out but unfortunately they didn't show the demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoEJicHRIlU

    yeah, i´m on cryengine, too......

i built some little device wich enables me showing my democontent with the rift.
Basically an extern headtracker wich cryengine can "understand"...
its a little workaround until CE gets official support...

if anyones interested, i could reproduce some of them.

I've been coding real-time 3D since 1989 and into CryEngine since the beginning. it was (and probably still is) the most beautiful and the most complete bag of tools for serious environmental artists in the public domain. I have worked with all of them and its head and shoulders over UDK and Unity. Just like Oculus it started as a thesis, and it was lovingly cared for and brought to life by enthusiastic scientists who simply wanted to build the best. Some of the crazy-clever real-time code nobody else believed was possible. SSAO, deferred lighting, POM, sub-surface, cascading shadows... they invented it and others have only imitated. Period!

But... something sad happened half-way thru CE3. Maybe the owners fell out of love with it! For some reason the old free SDK had to be unified with the Crysis3 studio tools, and what a sad mess it made! The latest CE3 is a bag of bugs. The myriad of tools no longer working well together. The code base allowed to degenerate into... well... a bit of a mess!

I fear the SAS subscription move has come too late for CryEngine. The UDK and Unity houses know that an engine has to have continuous serious investment to keep all the parts working together. Lack of proper Rift support in CE3 is a sure sign of under-investment. Boy I hope they turn it around. I do not like the thought of never seeing a next gen CE4 - it would be the end of an era!

What was the question? Oh yes... any one tried Rift in CE3. Yes. I spent days - I'll tell you now it won't work until senior developers from Crytek get together with Oculus to produce a robust (and official) implementation. I did get a tantalizing glimpse of just how amazing CE3 can be with Rift, but with serious aspect correction problems and no proper matrix barrel deformation you won't get very far with the fan-based code currently available for 3.5.4. If any one is interested I can post how I got the stereo views working, but quite frankly in the short-term you'd be wasting your time. Best go and cry in your beer, pray for Crytek and buy a Unity Por licence like me!

    Edit:

First of all The Cryengine is a very powerfull tool!!
It is also a very difficult tool.
With blood sweat and tears It is possible to make a game on your own (I did it).
You pay10 bugs a monts for a multy-million dollar piece of software (which is a bargain).
Other engines are free but you pay for extra contend (frogs, birds, squirels, vehicles, fireworks etc etc).

The Cryengine has VR support now!!

    So....
    that being said.

What are you waiting for :)

    :(

    Me too....

I wan't to develop on CryEngine and Oculus or any other VR hardware. Once I have finished my Crysis 2 mod, It pains me to say but I will be moving over to Unity... Hopefully by the end of this year when my mod is out they will have given it native support. Star citizen gives me hope that they are part way there but from what I can tell it's the developers of star citizen that have implimented Oculus support themselves. I don't think they will be releasing their source code any time soon or for free use anyway...

There's always Tridef which does a pretty good job but with assets dissapearing outside of your 90deg FOV it just doesn't work.

    Sad sad days...

I find it fitting that crytek are in deep Sh** after all I am like many who took the time to lean ce3 and was planning to develop content with the engine. But realizing the Impact VR is going to have on the gaming world over the next few years My priority changed to VR development only.

Its like crytek do not want the thousands of inde devs who will be powering the next big gaming evolution Using there engine? they have completely lost interest in either making money or the massive surge in vr development that's no doubt coming.
I was left with little choice but to abandon ce3 and jump in to learning UE4 from scratch! but FROM the fantastic oculus support in UE4 from Epic its a decision I'm more than happy I made.

The problem Crytek now faces is that the amount of potential dev its forcing to UE4 or Unity May not return to CryEngine IF they finally pull there heads out of there ass and implement OCULUS support. Those devs will be deep in to development and extremely familiar with those other engines & workflows, I can not imagine them comming back and having the pain of relearning the engine again. Its going to be to little to late and the fact that a MASSIVE game like starcitizen has actually had to do their own oculus development instead of Crytek not providing the support out of the gate is a big clue how much they have taken there eye of the ball.

Its a shame that there management is so blind and is not prioritizing VR support because there are some thing i think the engine does better than others Like the water FX and land creation. But if this attitude does not change i dont believe crytek even deserves to be in the game engine business any more.

I had been using CryEngine from around 2009 and produced several mods in that time. I had learnt all the fundimental basics and had real fun using it.

My latest project SAPIENCE was the swan song of CryEngine for me and I had hoped I would be able to convert it to the first real Oculus exsperience after I got my DK1 kit and now DK2.

But after all this time and with little or no support for VR I have moved on.

I have started from scratch with Unreal engine 4 and despite the initial confusion and getting used to an entirely new engine I wish I had swapped years ago.

I don't think there is any turning back for me now... It is a shame..

I haven't tried CryEngine yet, but I was working with DirectX before I started on Unreal Engine 4 and I wish I had switched a lot sooner as well.
