Artificial Distance

I don't have my rift yet, but I was thinking about the possibility of changing the distance of two objects for each eye to give the effect that something is farther away than it actually is. This could maintain the illusion that clouds are miles above your head without actually having clouds that far away. Is this something that's already done for sky boxes?

At around 40 one's eyes start to lose the ability to accommodate and by 80 almost everybody has completely lost this ability.

And those of us who stare at a computer screen 10 hours a day need to practice looking near/far so that we don't lose it even earlier than that! Still, it is a fascinating area of research, and I can't wait for my dev kit to turn up!
