Building the OculusSDK Samples

I am using MS Visual C++ 2010 express (free) and wanted to build the samples but you need to have the DirectX SDK installed and you need to setup the Include and Lib directories.

You do not need to do the following if you just want to run the sample exe's. They are already built for you.

First, you need to install the DirectX SDK:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=6812

  • Open the solution file "LibOVR_With_Samples_Msvc2010.sln" in Visual Studio and right-click on "OculusRoomTiny" and click "Properties" on the very bottom.

  • Open "Configuration Properties" and click on "VC++ Directories".

  • Click "Include Directories" and then click the little down arrow to the far right.

  • Double Click in the white text field then click on the "..." button that appears and choose the "Include" folder of where you installed the DirectX SDK. Mine is E:\Microsoft DirectX SDK (June 2010)\Include. Then click OK.

  • Do the same with the "Library Directories" but choose the "Lib" folder in the DirectX SDK install location. Click OK.

You should now be able to build all the samples within the OVR solution!

Yes, we assume you have the DirectX SDK.

It should probably be mentioned in the documentation, though. I will see about this.

That is a very strange error message, but luckily you are not the only person with this problem. The people in this thread seem to have found a solution to your problem:

Many times even carefully done directions can go wrong.

I got compilation errors in d3dx11 header files.
Hence the usual culprit is the correct in order application of
SDKs. I got a brand new pc+win7+gtx670 on the
news of oculus, so my compiler ide, sdk etc installation is untainted.

I successfully googled two notes regarding fixit correct sdk installation
order that may give some tips for the disheartened.

    first

    http://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/build-instructions-windows#TOC-Setting-up-the-environment-for-building-with-Visual-C-2010-Express-or-Windows-7.1-SDK

just the 5 bullets for setting up the environment for Visual Studio 2010
    not concerned with chromium.

    then

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/chuckw/archive/2011/12/09/known-issue-directx-sdk-june-2010-setup-and-the-s1023-error.aspx

(I like the quick uninstall command)

I had the same problem, fixed it by:
    - getting SP1 on visual studio
    - turning 'incremental linking' off (it's in the linker settings, I'm currently at work and can't give the exact location)

    Hope this will help
