CES 2014 Reveal

Regarding IGN's hands on of the new Rift...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kdcEwias1Y

I was at first surprised that Oculus implemented an external tracking solution to the next version of the Rift.

Looks sparkly and somehow feminine, like half my wife's bags. :)

Happy to see an OLED screen. But does anybody have info on resolution?

Any technical information on the range of the tracking camera, it's FOV, the ability of the new Rift to support more than one camera?

No solid data. You might be able to guess at some of that data if you watch the CES demonstration videos, but Oculus isn't giving out details on any of the new technology that they're using. This is due to a variety of reasons that Palmer discussed in a few of his CES interviews. Some of those reasons include:

    • NDA's that Oculus has with third parties.

    • Oculus tries to avoid suggesting favoritism for third-party technologies that they're using in the Rift. They also avoid these discussions so that they don't become inadvertent spokesmen for those products.

    • On-going design work. Nothing on the current iteration of the Rift is final, and any part of it may change significantly for the retail version.

They're not even saying that the camera-based positioning system is what the retail version will ship with. It is simply the system that has given them the best bang-for-the-buck so far. The bottom line is that the Rift's design is still evolving on many fronts, and about the only thing that is certain is that you stick it on your head.

No speculation based on currently available sensors and the spacing of the IR tags on the Rift?

@Ghostship - I recommend you contact Oculus directly to inquire because it most definitely has not been released to the public (just like I mentioned in my last post). We (I, other's may have seen more, dunno) have seen two video's released by bigger game developers with HD dev kits on their heads, so we assume it has been released to a select few. Whether this be because they were early investors, major investors, larger developers, etc., who knows. Good luck.

I sent Oculus Rift another e-mail asking a few simple questions on some crucial info we need about availability and dates and such about the high def rifts. Still no reply.

Ghsostship Aftermath has been greenlit, So both our games will be out by the end of this year.

We have worked very hard for almost 14 months to bring you an awesome native rift game, we have done that as you will find from the full release. our only doubts are with certain final development aspects which would relate to the consumer rift (as we are a game developer and developing our game for the Oculus Rift market). We hope our game will work fine on the consumer versions and we hope all the resolution works out well as well as the positional head tracking. ( We have developed a high res native rift game with a low res development one.) With out any type response from oculus rift with regards to our concerns we can only cross our fingers and hope the game is as good as it should be when the consumer rift is released.

If anyone out there can shed some light on release dates for a closer rift to the consumer one such as Crystal cove, that would help us out a lot and we me even be able to hold back on the release to make sure its all A-ok with the rift our game will be used with.

Thanks to anyone who can give us a little info.

@Ghostship: Not sure why you have not got a reply. You can PM me with your questions. Unfortunately I can't disclose much regarding release dates, but maybe there is something I can help with.

Hi, I would like to know when a dev kit version of the Crystal Cove will be for sale. I was thinking about buying the oculus rift but then I read about this newer version. Thanks in advance.

I can say with 99% certainty that the DK2 will be released sometime between today and April 23, 2050.

Sorry, I had to. I'm starting to see alot of people starting up on the forums with questions like these that have been answered, time and again. Perhaps the mod guy (sorry mod guy, I forgot your user name  nerf getting old).. can make a sticky on "Read here first if you have any questions" sticky thread?

    Please?

    'Near CV1 release' for DK2.

The cove was a prototype, much will change before DK2.
