Extending the walking range of the Rift (making cables long)

The short length of the cable between the control box and the Rift itself is limiting for anything but seated or standing-in-place.

The obvious solution is to put the control box in a carry pouch. This solution is fine for the video input and USB cables. as these can be extended easily. The issue is with power, as it's not desirable to have to carry around a bulky power adapter and extension.

I presume that we could extend the length of the power cable using some extension cable. I've measured the size of the adapter plug as 2.1mm (inner ring) and 5.5mm outer ring, which would indicate that this might do the trick?: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ex-Pro-Quality-2-1mm-Socket-Extension/dp/B004FVHD7I/

The other (better) option is to extend the cable running from the control box to the Rift itself. This might be a bit trickier... has anyone attempted it?

I've hooked up my rift to give me 10 Meters of freedom. It's fantastic!

    I bought

    1 x 10M usb (with repeater) cable
    1 x 10m HDMI cable
    1 x 10m M-F Audio Jack (Don't forget this part!)
    1 x 9M of wire.

I was comfortable splicing the power supply unit from Oculus - as it's just a standard 5v USB output anyhow, and it's 2 wires. Even if I was a total moron I'd still have a 50% change of getting it right... The wires have the positive and negative markings on them, so it was easy to ssplice in the extra 9M of wire.

I ran the whole thing into a conduit and it's super easy to walk around, and not all that messy. 10M may have been overkill - but it might be fun to try a few VR/AR experiments.

The end result is a nice breakout box with an audio jack ready for headphones, and the weight isn't that noticeable.

    Cheese.

This might be a bit padantic, but electiricity can only travel in a vacuum as lightning (not quite, but close enough) and since electrons have mass, they cannot travel at the speed of light (and good luck getting them to transmit data reliably).

You can transmit information at the speed of light in a vacuum using light, however.
