It's funny how most haters have post count less than 30, speak volumes.

Well, here in Finland we have an age-old saying which goes something like this " ".
So in essence, if you have nothing useful to say, then shut up perkele.

Returning to the issue at hand, I admit that it would have been nice to at least have an update on the dev forum announcements before reading it from the local press. It is quite a big deal, after all.

I'm not a huge fan of Zuckerberg, but if this makes Oculus a household name then I'm all up for it!

Sorry, it was a bit of a kneejerk. I am not opposed to Facebook because I think they will neglect or kill oculus. I'm opposed to Facebook because I don't think they deserve a prominent place in our lives, it's purely philosophical. Facebook is cancer and I don't like how they subvert and sell information provided with the intent to share with acquaintances or how they never delete anything ever. I really really don't want the hardware to be locked in to digitally signed drivers doing who knows what kind of snooping and reporting back to home.

I was originally expecting a deal with Sony but they had a big case of 'not invented here' and 'that's nothing special' so I figured probably Microsoft or Google with a smaller chance of them joining someone like steam, Logitech or remaining independent. Facebook was totally out of left field.

If you look at the market cap of Facebook ($160b) and the number of users (1.1b) each users is worth $150 to them... and only 1/10 of those users are really active anyhow so that's $1500 for each truely active user. This is total insanity. Googles market cap I get, google does everything they are diversified and excel in many areas. Tesla I get that's a company with vision, sound leadership, and a bright future and in a couple years they will control 1/3 of the global lithium battery supply. Facebook is rotting, its a bubble that has already popped and everyone but the investors got the memo. Facebook has over-saturated the global market for the service it offers and they have no real growth potential. Buying oculus is a meh move for Zuckerberg, what else is he going to do with all them billions? If he wanted to make a compound impact that mattered he would put out a $20b offer for valve. Steam and oculus under the same tent would provide a definitive position keeping competitors locked out, I hope that doesn't happen though. I really hope VR becomes another standard parietal device like a mouse, universally supported and having many competing vendors.

BTW microsoft, apple or google could never have really made a deal with whatsapp, too strong of a conflict of interest with partners.

By the look of it, it is. I mean, Oculus does not have any customers yet.. This is strange business!

I think there's a lot of interesting things that can be said here on a forum. Reviews of new indie projects, recommendations on what demos are good for demoing. Sharing ideas about VR etc... definitely I wouldn't call this "nothing useful" :(

Very true. Whatsap already has one bilion users and generates good income without any ads. Fact that Oculus was valued *only* 10 times less is remarkable, so I think OP's WTF should be reversed  It's 2bln for an idea, a vision. There's no product, and while this community is great, there's no real customer base too. What if the entire Oculus team would now abandon this barnd and start a new one called "Oculus +"? This obviosly would never happen but my point is that 2bln for relatively new brand with no background must be "strange business" as Densohax put, especially for ppl outside VR.

I'm trying very hard to understand what was shown to Mark to make him dump all that money.. Either he was extremely impressed by the demo and wanted to instantly dump all of his money, or this deal has been planned a long time ago after the kickstarter.

Nobody makes deals in 2 seconds on a napkin. And if it's the case, it's still a rough decision done in a strange way..

I am still trying to figure this out, it doesn't make any sense actually, why not wait for a consumer product and see how it goes before making a move? I understand that if it was successful, someone else might take the cake, it just feels like they have some kind of underground project going on and it's about to be unveiled..

There's no way in hell Oculus would deploy CV1 without a title, it would just be a completely retarded move on their part.. So maybe there's a project behind the scene and that's why we don't get any kind of tangible information yet..

DK2 must ship I guess, or it's a bad april fools joke, which is extremely unlikely, because it would be called stock manipulation.. ;)
