Ground Control - Get your feet in the game

Hi all,

I've been working on a VR locomotion input device for almost a year and a half now. Me and my team finally unveiled the current prototypes at the SXSW Gaming Expo last week to great enthusiasm. Tomorrow (Tuesday March 24th) we will be launching the Kickstarter campaign at 1pm EST. The product is called Ground Control and I believe that it will be of interest to people on this board.

We'll be providing a LOT more information tomorrow on the Kickstarter page. But if you have any questions you can post them here or contact me directly. We`re looking any and all feedback.

These seem like they'd be pretty good as space ship rudder/thrust pedals.

You show shipping to backers on Jan 2015 instead of 2016 on your "production timeline" graphic.

I've sent Emails to VRCircle and Road to VR, requesting that they look at the project and perhaps feature it on their site. Road to VR so far responded already saying they were aware of the project (they probably read this forum) and are indeed considering a write up.

What other sites could/should we contact to get some press? What has been done thus far? Is it a problem to have loose cannons such as myself pestering people?

Thank you so much for emailing those sites! We've been sending out a lot press releases and I've been reaching out to various people individually. I didn't have VRCircle on the list, I'll reach out to them too.

Having someone like yourself pestering people is a huge help, as long as it's polite. :-) The fact that it's someone not directly tied to the project shows that there is interest out there, despite our low numbers so far.

Press releases have gone to the top tech sites (Gizmodo, Engadget, etc,). The other VR sites I've contacted are:

UploadVR - They actually came by our booth at SXSW
Virtual Reality Times - They mentioned us in a SXSW article

Anyone have suggestions for other sites to contact?

I think this is a really neat idea, but its my guess the entry price for a product is going to kill you. Please take this as constructive criticism

If the price for to was sub $100 i feel you would have generated a lot more interest. However this would more than likely mean a substantial compromise in quality.

The price after USD conversion + shipping to AUS would end up being close to 300+

When i talk about the dollars, i am not shy of spending a dollar, i have a Warthog thrust-master and sitel flight pedals ( i ,must admit i did not pay FULL RRP (would have been in the vacinity of AUS700-800, a price at which i balked at ) i picked up both for 450 second hand.

These are amazing input mechanism that add a lot to immersion in flight / space sims ...

I wish you best of luck and hope to see you product out there in the future.

Well, for what it's worth, I just upped my pledge to $700., I suppose more as a token gesture at this point.

Perhaps after the commercial versions of VR headsets come out and there is a 'much' larger market for control systems out there, a relaunch might have more success. There are going to be a LOT of people out there wanting to experience their VR world, but enormously frustrated by the extremely kludgy control systems out there.

People like to praise Vive's immersion from people being able to stand, but standing will get tired very quickly (quite literally), and the fact that you cannot actually walk about more than a step or two make it frankly, a gimmick, not a solution. People talk about reinventing gaming, but that is just mincing words; what they are admitting is that that control system literally won't work with the sort of RPGs and FPS games that people have been enjoying for twenty years.

I am buying a Cyberith Virtualizer for myself, but it is expensive, takes up a large amount of additional space, and I may find myself physically unable to sustain the exertion of playing with it for extended periods of time. I am pretty sure that systems like the Omni and Cyberith Virtualizer will find enough of a market to keep them afloat and developing. I am also pretty sure that they are not the one and only solution that will meet everyone's needs.

Being able to walk around in a game while sitting down in VR (and not breaking your furniture and yourself) is going to still be the way to play, Vive hype not withstanding. However using your hands as hands, not as feet, I expect will be a big deal for people once they are able to experience it. Being able to sit and control all of one's movement with one's feet, leaving one's hands free for other things in the game, I am convinced will be a way many people will gain the maximum enjoyment.
