Matterport 3D Camera - Create Levels in Minutes

Wouldn't it be cool if we could create game levels in minutes modeled from real environments? When I attended GDC (Game Developers Conference) 2013, I discovered the Matterport 3D scanner which claims to do exactly that.

I'm considering starting a business of providing 3D models to real estate folks to include salespeople, appraisers, contractors and architects. What would be cool is to be able to use the same models for the game development community. And, of course, step into these models with the Rift.

Recently, Matterport sent me a 3D model with OBJ file that we can experiment with for "non-commercial purposes".

edit 2: I'm putting a link to the zip file here since the zip is 17MB and the max upload to the forum is 8MB. I'm not sure how easy it will be for you do download the zip from there.

Could someone familiar with Unity explain how to import the model to a Unity project?

Interesting, but it seems a lot of work is necessary to clean up a model like that. But I'd love to see more development in this area, it would be really cool if it worked like you would want.

If camera mapping interests you, take a look at some of the Kinect based solutions available:

    Skanect
    CCNY RGBD
    3D Scan
    KScan3D
    ReconstructMe

There is also 'Kinect Fusion' which has recently been added to Kinect for Windows SDK.

Also check which Kinect they support, Xbox Kinect vs Kinect For Windows.

Kinect Fusion is out? Cool, I'll have to grab the latest sdk.

    It looks great with 3DVision.

I also agree with what was said about point cloud and that it will be a lot of work to clean this up. On the other hand, with the 3DVision, it looks more realistic then everything I watched in 3D.

I did a scan of my desk with Kinect Fusion.
640x640x640 voxels at 384 voxels per metre.
It came out as a 3.6 million triangle 830MB obj file. I trimmed off half the triangles (stuff like the brick wall behind it) in blender and rendered it.

Not too bad, considering how poor quality the kinect depth view usually looks.

Unfortunately the kinect fusion in the sdk doesn't support colour or texture capture. :(
