My Gopro 3+ Black 180 degree stereo rig

Here is a 180 equirectangular stereo movie done with a twin Gopro 3+ Black rig
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gslyccr43c8whwy/eveleighmarkets.mp4

In VR Player under Media you need to set Format to Side by Side and Projection to Dome

Until recently there was no way to get good synchronization reliably with recent Gopros for stereo but there is now a sync cable you can buy from http://3dguy.tv/ which works well. I am not sure if the concept behind it can be extended to work with more than 2 cameras

Basically my rig for this video looks like this http://www.mediavr.com/gopro3plusfisheyestereorig.jpg
with replacement Sunex lenses to get about 180 by 150 degree coverage on the 1920 by 1440 format on the Gopros

It is very simple to shoot 3d for the Rift with this because all you need to do is hold the camera level and point it generally in the right direction.

For more accurate composition I can plug a Gopro LCD Backpak into the cable or I can plug a 7" monitor into the HDMI socket of one or other of the Gopros -- I have this one
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FEELWORLD-7-TFT-LCD-HDMI-Monitor-FW678-HD-O-W-Sun-Shield-Shoe-Mount-f-Camera-/141125167872?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item20dbb72b00&_uhb=1

With two LCD Backpaks connected you can get stereo previewing of the video if you arrange some optics (spare Rift lenses maybe).

So how does After Effects compare to Autopano Video for stabilizing vr?

Mediavr I had a question or two for you if you have time to indulge me. Basically my setup is a pair of Gopro 3+ Bs with the dual hero system - produces great 3D results in my opinion if you shoot at 60fps 1080p and with the frame lock to minimise post issues. I found stabilization of dual L+R videos in AE or Premiere Pro a bit painful because it can throw the parallax out if you apply the warp stabilizer when the frame sequences arent exact - but it does tend to tell you this by throwing the re-analyze banner at you when you copy the effect from one track to the other. The other thing I found helpful is to slow down to half the speed and render at 30fps - obviously halves the impact of any motion judder, but it is a trade off if you are wanting to render out 60fps.. Any other tricks or advice on AE workflows for stabilization appreciated..

Yes I am getting to shoot a a lot of 60fps 1080p lately. And then run it as slow mo. I use 1440p 25fps when I need full circle, or 2.7K W or M when I need more resolution. Stabilization, tell me about it. I want to make shots like that look they were on rails. It is possible but the main thing now is to find the final rendering step that will spit out the levelled equis or fisheyes at a fast rate. The thing is to avoid all jitter and rolling shutter, slowly swaying movements are easy to fix. So I have reverted to my mechanical gimbal for the moment which gives me swaying shots and then I track them in After Effects etc and render them in After Effects (using Element3d and lately Mettle's Skybox. This works really well for 360 videos where you dont run out of image but in 180 your view starts to get cropped a lot if you are not careful. Jitter is the killer, because you end up with stabilized frames every occasional one of which has motion blur and rolling shutter distortion. Rolling shutter will screw up your tracking. ...

Here is a 180 3d video at 1080p in low light -- the resolution is marginal but the 3d is ok.
    http://www.vrideo.com/watch/MB5rhBY
It is stabilized enough to be comfortable viewing I think

If you have a WebVR enabled browser you can see it in the DK2 in Vrideo (now supports hemispheric videos) -- or in 2D mode without the DK2

    or you can download it
    http://www.dropbox.com/s/29y0t81hqglfxp ... 80_3dh.mp4 (30mb)

and view it in LiveViewRift on PC or MilkVR on GearVR

[edit] here are some notes I wrote about Vrideo support on Oculus Reddit
.. and 2D hemispheric ones too. So that makes two web players -- with Milk VR (for Gear VR only) that now support hemispheric formats. Vrideo does not have a GearVR player yet.
    http://www.vrideo.com/watch/MB5rhBY (shot at 1080p 50fps)
    here is another 180 3d one .. of a dance festival http://www.vrideo.com/watch/tH270XQ
Altogether now Vrideo has support for 2D or 3D video versions of:
    Plane
    Cylinder
    Cylinder (stacked)
    Hemisphere (equirectangular)
    Hemisphere (dome)
    Sphere
(side by side or over/under for all 3d modes)
Vrideo videos are only supported in 3d (for DK1 and DK2) in a WebVR enabled browser. I got it working with DK2 in a WebVR enabled Firefox build but didnt have any luck with a Chrome version. In Firefox it worked in 3D but with a lot of judder with fast head movements -- which is WebVR problem generally at the moment I think -- I will have to do some more tweaking. http://mozvr.com/downloads/
Gear VR local playback of 360 or 180 3d videos in Milk VR is good! Here they are as downloads: http://www.dropbox.com/s/29y0t81hqglfxp ... 80_3dh.mp4 (30Mb)
    http://www.dropbox.com/s/9nfn49iy3gsgyb ... 80_3dh.mp4 (40Mb)
-- put them in a folder called MilkVR on the root of your SD Card (use Hola or put the phone in Airplane mode if in a MilkVR region restricted zone).
(the market scene is an experiment in stabilization and levelling via camera tracking and mechanical gimbal stabilization)
Here is the market scene on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VS79cj_-_aQ (nice btw to see Youtube is supporting 50fps as well as 60fps playback now)
Also if you get Vrideo working in the browser for DK2 you should check out the Ryot Nepal earthquake 360 videos -- these look a lot more impressive in vr than in standard monitor mode.
Vrideo should maybe make an anaglyph version for 3d videos for those without HMDs.

Hey mediavr, thanks so much for all the experience and advice you've shared! I'm looking to build a 180 3D rig for a short film, and had a quick question about the CCOM Tech 1.29 Aliexpress lenses you recommended: Do you (or anyone else here) know if they'd work well using the Dual Hero System housing? Just want to make sure the camera will still fit inside of it. Thanks for any info!

Indeed, e.g. interior stereo stills would be able by shooting and rotating and shooting again.

There have been many >180 degree lenses discussed in this thread, but what would be the one to buy for a go pro (or clone) M12 lens as of April 2015?

I am still using CCOM Tech 1.29 lenses from Aliexpress and I think that might be the best cheap easy to get option currently

no they wont fit .... there are some very small lenses (from Sunex eg.) that might fit, but then you would still have problems with vignetting

With the introduction of Youtube 360 there is lots of interest now in cheaper camera array solutions, Xiaomi Yi's and Mobius particularly.

I noticed there is this app now for live streaming of multiple Mobius cameras (up to 4 cameras)_ to an Android phone --
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... usac&hl=es

It has various streaming stereo modes for twin Mobius cameras too -- anaglyph, side by side, over/under etc. This could be a way of making a portable solution for 3d previewing of twin Gopro 3d 180 videos (with two Mobius with remote cables with the lens/sensors as close as possible to the Gopro lenses). There is also squeezed side by side, good for 3d TVs

Btw ... talking of M12 180 fisheye lenses. A new one is this Theia lens --
http://mark-peterson-f065.squarespace.com/ty180ir 12 Megapixel rating ... this looks like a nice lens .. if someone tries it can they report back? ... I asked and they said it was $65:

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, we are now selling this lens. The price depends on volume. The price for <25 is $65 each, 25 is $60, 50 is $55, 75 is $50, 100 is $45, plus shipping and handling.

If you require more than 100 please let me know and I will get you a quote.

    Best regards,
    Andrea

It is f2.0 with a fl 1.31mm and 180 degree coverage I think -- so half a stop brighter than the CCOMTech 1.29mm I have been using -- but that has 190 degree coverage I think -- which is convenient when you need to crop a little after stabilizing

Four of the Theia lenses on Mobius camera with the 3" extension cable would make a nice small form factor spherical rig.
It is pretty easy to start 4 cameras at the same time by using both hands and squeezing pairs of buttons between thumb and index finger.

The 1/3 sensor on the Mobius cropped to 16:9 would capture 180 on the wide with a bit of black circle showing and about 100° on the narrow.

You would have a rig similar to this. Except use the shorter cables to lessen the amount of noise introduced.
    http://photocreations.ca/3D/Mobius_4_lens_360.jpg

With GoPro shooting 4:3 you only need 3 cameras to capture the sphere but with almost zero overlap at the zenith and nadir. With 4 cameras you can tilt opposite sides up and down a couple deg to get some overlap. Like I did here is a 3D print design that I made and using 4 GoPro with similar lenses from iZugar.
    https://www.tinkercad.com/things/8XlU4K ... trait-rig/

With 6 GoPro arranged equal angled would have enough overlap to capture stereo. And by tilting every other camera up a couple deg and the others down a couple deg would have the extra overlap to get better zenith and nadir.

That was looking pretty good in my Dk2. Do you have any tutorials on how you did this mediavr?
