My Gopro 3+ Black 180 degree stereo rig

Here is a 180 equirectangular stereo movie done with a twin Gopro 3+ Black rig
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gslyccr43c8whwy/eveleighmarkets.mp4

In VR Player under Media you need to set Format to Side by Side and Projection to Dome

Until recently there was no way to get good synchronization reliably with recent Gopros for stereo but there is now a sync cable you can buy from http://3dguy.tv/ which works well. I am not sure if the concept behind it can be extended to work with more than 2 cameras

Basically my rig for this video looks like this http://www.mediavr.com/gopro3plusfisheyestereorig.jpg
with replacement Sunex lenses to get about 180 by 150 degree coverage on the 1920 by 1440 format on the Gopros

It is very simple to shoot 3d for the Rift with this because all you need to do is hold the camera level and point it generally in the right direction.

For more accurate composition I can plug a Gopro LCD Backpak into the cable or I can plug a 7" monitor into the HDMI socket of one or other of the Gopros -- I have this one
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FEELWORLD-7-TFT-LCD-HDMI-Monitor-FW678-HD-O-W-Sun-Shield-Shoe-Mount-f-Camera-/141125167872?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item20dbb72b00&_uhb=1

With two LCD Backpaks connected you can get stereo previewing of the video if you arrange some optics (spare Rift lenses maybe).

On the Mtbs3d forum someone was asking about lenses recently and I said this as an update --
Lensation have some really interesting looking lenses for this -- they have this lens Fisheye BF9M1422
    http://www.lensation.de/downloads/LS_CAT_2013.pdf (page 12)

/edit/ this is the same lens I think

Omnitech make a classy C-mount fisheye, and they have a M12 190 degree fisheye too, and they said they would cement on an IR filter if I wanted it.
    http://www.omnitech.com/fisheye.htm
$250 for lens, plus $50 for filter
Omnitech fisheyes are used a lot for all-sky fisheyes for astronomy and I suspect it is good but it is not specifically designed for megapixel sensors. It has a long barrel so should work on Gopro 3+

I have ordered four of the Alaudoptical 1.41mm 9 megapixel lenses -- I should have them in 3 or 4 days -- when I will give you a report. They are $40 each, FedEx shipping to Australia $35. I bought 4 to play around with 360 video shooting. If they dont fit on my Gopros I will use them on my Mobius cameras but I am pretty sure they will fit

    http://www.alaudoptical.com/viewproduct.asp?SortID=30&ID=178

[edit] I have got these today -- short testing and they look really great -- sharper
than the Sunex 219s I have been using -- and no color fringing. Flare resistance is at least as good.
They are physically much bigger. So much so that you cannot have two cameras side by side with one
inverted in the default (30mm interaxial) Dual Hero System configuration. But the two vertical configuration (45mm interaxial) works
as does the two horizontal wider 90mm configuration. They are significantly heavier!

Here is a test in low light in Side by Side 180 fisheye format (what VR Player calls FullDome)

set it to 1080p or 1440p in Youtube's settings

I will really have to research Chinese fisheye optics more thoroughly. As I mentioned in another thread there are really interesting ultra fisheye M12 and CS lenses with more than 200 degree coverage. None of these will work on a Gopro but would probably work on Mobius with the remote sensor attachment
    http://www.shtjx.cn/en/index_mcplook_t4_x4_s4_i45.html

They list there a 185 degree M12 lens too which looks intriguing because the rest of their products look so high tech.

US security lens company Theia are bringing out a 16-20 Megapixel! M12 fisheye lens. So we will be covered for 4K video with the Gopro 4 :)

MediaVR, just had to share I've been following your work on Reddit and here for weeks. You're simply pushing things forward left and right. Thank you for sharing what you've found so others may create better video VR experiences.

Just grabbed some Alaudoptical lenses based on this sample too.

How Oculus or another firm hasn't snapped you up yet, I have no clue. Thanks again! :D

Wow, the 250 deg lens worth a shot. But even if the lens is good, 4k is not enough to include 250 fisheye nicely. Anyway shall go visit them shortly, may get a fisheye lens for my projector too. email me if you have any question with them.

Btw, I'm experimenting a tri-fisheye approach as showing in iximage.com for stereo 180 for dome. Stitching error was barely seen. 3 fisheye-gopro can come closely with ease.

They said it was $400 and it comes without an IR-cut filter. Can you check if it combines C mount and M12 threads as it seems to show. It has an image circle of 3.5mm the spec sheet shows which would be good for a Gopro if it could get close enough to the sensor.

If you look at their "bow tie" image regions in Iximage's pdfs you see they are not using the image regions in the centre of the three lenses' positions. So this makes it very viable I think for good Rift 3d 360 movies from elevated movies looking down from a pole mounted in the centre of the three camera triangle -- say 4m in the air looking down at a crowded scene. This has the advantage too of being a much less flare prone orientation.

checked, the 250 deg lens was a C-mount 3mpx panomorphic lens for 4:3 sensor, and being used in their own security cam system taking 1600x1200 video. Quoted at $500. They shared me a video sample with their interactive player, but the observed hfov/dfov/vfov was not wider than 180 deg. Lens quality was so-so.

    Mmm ... thanks!

I found this company that is going to bring out a range of single lens 240 degrees video cameras in Fall they say
    http://360fly.com/

    http://www.gizmag.com/360fly-interactive-panoramic-video/31085/
    1500 by 1500 pixels at 30fps

.. maybe this is what happened to the Lensation 240 degree lenses :)

.. but if you look at the guy's sleeve in the video on 360fly.com you see the name "Omnitech" as in
    http://www.omnitech.com/products.htm
.. so maybe Omnitech make the lens

and in the press kit download 360fly say

EyeSee360 the creator of 360Fly product and technology spun out of Carnegie Mellon
    University’s Robotics Institute in 1998. EyeSee360 is a leader in single-shot panoramic
imaging for both still and video photography. EyeSee360 has applied decades of
research in robotic vision, image rendering, and software interface expertise to the
challenge of creating interactive panoramic still images, prerecorded and live streaming
360 degree video. For more information http://www.eyesee360.com

They say they will have two products -- the ball camera and a 240 degree attachment for Iphones

Eyesee360.com is the same as gopano.com which pushes a mirror lens I think .. so the 360fly is their next gen solution I guess

There is already a 235 degree attachment for mobile phones by Osino

I tried the so called 240 deg iphone attachment lens. It was a funny toy, but you can only get sharp image at the center 25% zone. Never able to stitch well with this len

I have been messing about with my new Feiyutech 3-axis gimbal stabilizer with twin Mobius cameras with Sunex 215 lenses .. I write about in this post on the Oculus subReddit

    http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2b9ao3/a_very_compact_rig_for_3_axis_gimbal_stabilized/

Also I notice on Gopro User forums a post about the Dual Hero System with photos and circuitry details of interior components

    Hi mediavr,

The 3 lens 3D180 approach was impressive. shall be cool for dome 3d producers.
Here is my test. I set the stereo plane at the tent & checked with the stereomaker, now the buildings are falling in.
http://ge.tt/3Dh79Gp1/v/0?c shall work with vrplayer or totalcinema360.

The base plate was not even so the orientation of the cam was slightly different, I had to crop out the portion below the horizon in order to get a straight bottom line.

    Cheers,
    KC
