My Gopro 3+ Black 180 degree stereo rig

Here is a 180 equirectangular stereo movie done with a twin Gopro 3+ Black rig
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gslyccr43c8whwy/eveleighmarkets.mp4

In VR Player under Media you need to set Format to Side by Side and Projection to Dome

Until recently there was no way to get good synchronization reliably with recent Gopros for stereo but there is now a sync cable you can buy from http://3dguy.tv/ which works well. I am not sure if the concept behind it can be extended to work with more than 2 cameras

Basically my rig for this video looks like this http://www.mediavr.com/gopro3plusfisheyestereorig.jpg
with replacement Sunex lenses to get about 180 by 150 degree coverage on the 1920 by 1440 format on the Gopros

It is very simple to shoot 3d for the Rift with this because all you need to do is hold the camera level and point it generally in the right direction.

For more accurate composition I can plug a Gopro LCD Backpak into the cable or I can plug a 7" monitor into the HDMI socket of one or other of the Gopros -- I have this one
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FEELWORLD-7-TFT-LCD-HDMI-Monitor-FW678-HD-O-W-Sun-Shield-Shoe-Mount-f-Camera-/141125167872?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item20dbb72b00&_uhb=1

With two LCD Backpaks connected you can get stereo previewing of the video if you arrange some optics (spare Rift lenses maybe).

Getting good results of S3D in 360° is hard. To get something that is close is not too difficult once you learn the software.

For easiest I suggest iZugar's Z6X3D because of only using 6 cameras and only dealing with 3 seams on the final output.
    http://www.izugar.com/product/z6x3d.html

GoPro4 Hero Black will give higher frame rate and resolution. Some have issues with overheating and starting all cameras with same settings with wireless remote. The 3D kit currently does not work on the GP4HB, waiting for a firmware update.

GoPro3 Hero Black does have a 3D kit that can be used to sync each camera pair. Batteries and chargers are not compatible with Hero4.

Expect software to improve to create better stitching in the future. I don't expect it will ever be easy to make it perfect.

There will always be people that will have difficulty watching baked in stereoscopic 3D. Because either the baked in IPD does not match theirs and they are very sensitive to this, or once they see S3D they want to move their head sideways but the perspective does not change causing nausea.

When we have a method to delivering light field video so stereo vision can be rendered at run time on the HMD then the ideal recording solution would be many overlapping cameras to record the entire sphere from multiple locations so a complete depth data can be created.

Well I knew it was contradictory, maybe its an idea to buy a couple of Mobius cams to just start exploring the possibilities

With Mobius and the included wide angle lens it takes 7 pairs to cover the horizon to get 360° 3D in portrait mode to get as much vertical FoV as possible. Like my rig.
    http://photocreations.ca/3D/mobius_camera_rig.html
Replacing the lenses with something wider would mean you can get away with fewer. 6 is the lowest number of overlapping pairs that don't have lenses that interfere with each other. But you could also do 3 pairs like the Z6X3D with the right lens.

The Mobius cameras also suffer from only having 30fps and rolling shutter that causes jello effect forcing to record with a stationary camera only.

Than the Mobius cams are a no go, because I want to shoot video while walking around.

Maybe it´s a better idea to start off with two Gopro 3+ Black cams with Wide Angle Lenses and the Go Pro Mount System.

Or two of the Kodak SP360 cams which are already available in retail...(also 30fps on Full HD)

My additional pair of CCOM 1.29mm lenses came in a week from
    http://www.aliexpress.com/item/1-29mm-180-degrees-super-wide-angle-lens-fisheye-lens-sport-camera-lens-M12-mount-lens/32224988585.html .. via DHL

    Both copies seem very good

So now I have 3 good ones and I am happy.

No going back to Alaudopticals -- the multicoating of the CCOM 1.29mm lenses make them much more versatile in contrasty lighting situations. Alaudoptical have severe veiling flare in strongly backlit situations and produce multiple flare points with strong point light sources in frame. CCOM have a kind of mild localised (red) veiling flare with very strong backlighting and a very compact single flare point (also red in color)with strong point light sources.

Here is a CCOM 1.29mm video frame at 2.7K (2560*1440) of a strongly backlit situation
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/97n1k676w23qtnk/ccom219.jpg

It is noteworthy that CCOM have another 10 megapixel M12 fisheye with a longer focal length - 1.58mm .

This is an interesting looking lens and good for say using 3 vertical Gopros to shoot 2D 360/180s -- and if you can get good copies and it is the same quality as the 1.29m it should be great. Also 192 degrees coverage vs. 185 for the 1.29mm.
But f3 so not so great in low light.
However the Aliexpress seller does not list this lens but maybe he could get it listed if you asked -- otherwise you would have to get it from CCOM I guess who dont seem setup for small sales.

I wish they had a table so I could compare lenses after selecting the features I was interested in.
It looks like the lens you listed is a 8M instead of 12M but with a larger image size 1/2" instead of 1/2.5" so the image would get cropped a bit.

which lens are you talking about? -- I talk about two CCOM lenses in the last post -- where does it say 8M or 12M -- all I see is 10 megapixels? Both lenses will produce full circle coverage - at least horizontally --on certain Gopro 3+ video formats.

I made a twin camera rig for back to back Gopro spherical 2D videos with the CCOM 1.21mm lenses yesterday and tested it this morning -- using the Dual Camera System for sync

here it is as an interactive panoramic movie
    https://beta.littlstar.com/videos/15422e43

here are a couple of pictures :
    front of the rig http://imgur.com/3DlZWUT
    back of the rig http://imgur.com/QHIsMn3

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNYNEYphjg8 (check it at 1440p)

not bad ... but I think I will stick mostly to 3 cameras rigs for 2D 360s, except now using the CCOM lenses -- as with three cameras you can use the 2.7K video setting and final resolution is much higher than with 2 cameras at 1440p -- except with more seams and post-syncing issues

Fantastic results! I'm trying to understand the details about al these stereo rigs, but is it possible to have 3D stereo results with 4 Gopro's with your setup? If so, how would you position them?
