Oculus emulator for development purposes

Hello, I'm sure I won't be able to afford an Oculus Rift any time in the next several years, would it be possible to get an Oculus Emulator that makes the system think the rift is connected and see the output in a window for development purposes?

Hey Folks - I realize this post is a few months old, but it comes up pretty high in the Google results and so I wanted to weigh in.

We ran into a similar need: We wanted to be able to quickly do play tests of our VR scenes without having to have the Rift plugged in (i.e. we were traveling, working from home, our Rifts were tied up with other devs, etc.). So we wrote a little emulator utility in Unity for Oculus Rift which basically checks if there's an HMD connected, gives camera control to keyboard/mouse/gamepad/remote/touch, and if there's no HMD/controllers detected, it can also simulate position-tracked controllers using primitives or prefabs (and FWIW it supports both Oculus Rift and Vive).

Since a couple folks asked us to, we've actually beta released it free of charge for now online: http://developers.immerseum.io. All it needs to work is Unity and the Oculus Utilities for Unity plugin.

It's not an HMD replacement - what possibly could be? - but we found that it made playtesting our VR scenes much more convenient (who wants to put on / take off a headset a hundred times in an hour while tweaking something, right?). It'll be up in beta for another few weeks at least, maybe longer depending on beta results. At some point after the initial beta results are in we're going to be putting it up in the Unity Asset Store, too.

Feel free to check it out - I hope it helps!

    All the best,
    Chris

There is no RiftConfigurationUtility tool anymore in SDK 1.19.0 for Windows. Is it still possible to run the emulator?

It is possible to run the emulator with runtime 0.8-beta, which comes with RiftConfigurationUtility tool, and is available to download from https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/package/oculus-runtime-for-windows/
You'll probably have to use sdk 0.8-beta with this runtime, get it from https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/package/oculus-sdk-for-windows/0.8.0.0-beta/
