OSX and Linux

I am very disappointed to find the SDK is MS Windoze only. :-( I currently avoid using that OS and do not have it installed on any of my personal systems.

When can we expect OSX and Linux versions of the SDK? On the one hand I want to dive into this. On the other hand I don't want to have to buy and install an OS I have very strong feelings against in order to do so.

It is nice that user solutions starts to appear. So can someone from Oculus share with us the current state of their Linux SDK and release date estimation? Depending on the date one can make decision whether to a) stay with Win for a little while and wait for the "official" SDK, b) use the "unofficial" one.

Linux support is being worked on and should be available relatively soon. Maybe not in the next release, but sometime in the near future. I don't want to jump the gun and announce a release date. But probably sooner than you think.

People who measured the power consumption say it uses 600mA at 5V, but it works okay powered over USB (which has a 500mA limit).

The power adapter supplies more power than is required, which can extend its life and help it run cooler.

I have some apps that run on my Raspi and Rift. I posted a little demo program in my "Rift Pi" thread over at MTBS3D. Most apps need GPU support (GLSL shaders) for a fully immersive experience on the RasPi.

I have a 3D graphic parametric equation plotter that runs on my RasPi, and lets me view the colorfully swirly functions (mathematical knots) from the INSIDE. I am surrounded on all sides by math! Awesome stuff! I love algorithmic art. I have a thread full of it over at MobileRead.com too (for eink displays), but beware that I twisted and bent the bash shell horribly to do it (a 'bash' arithmetic taylor's series sine function, and 'dd' to plot pixels into the framebuffer). Love it or hate it, I moved on to doing even more in C (with full eink dithered animation). But the RasPi is much higher resolution and much more colorful.

Anyway, more "Rift Pi" stuff soon...

Just got my Oculus .. but still deciding if I start hacking with it or if I let it stale until Linux support is released.

As I understand so far there are some alternatives to run it, could anyone give me a feedback on the state of either official releases and non official releases ?

A bit disappointed but what can you do, I certainly won't be installing w7/w8 on compute boxes.

I'm working with this, (posted earlier in this thread):

    https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=667&start=20

It's quite easy to use -- there are some examples, including a minimal command-line test. This version is linux-specific... a newer version uses HIDAPI to be crossplatform (this API doesn't change), but I think the author has been swamped by work before being able to touch it up for an updated package.

It doesn't include stereo/distort rendering, but I've posted a demo in that same thread which can be extracted-from (not ideal, but I wanted to keep it simple for packaging until a time when there's a repo we can work from).

Thanks for sharing @atavener, regarding the video was straight forward to setup so I am using mouse for the orientation.

The library is already able to return me raw orientation, it might be enough to keep me busy during the long weekend.

    Thanks !
