Proof of concept ODT.

08-09-14 UPDATE:

Done with summer activities.
Top motion platform , support hardware and resistance pole working as intended.
Bottom platform....it is working ...but not exactly how I want it to perform. Took it apart in order to improve ergonomics of it. Testing few other thing to improve slide/ rolling function. It will take shape of a dish and should be more slippery.
Side notes:
After running COD4 for about 20 minutes I released... I got to get in better shape in order to enjoy this type of activity.
For best experience head have to be decoupled from hands/gun for better immersion.....
Cardio is intense

Image is a bit outdated ...bottom platform looks different now.

At present it is combination of gametrak, hydra, trackIR.
Best setup Stem, Oculus, and some presence enhancements...
this setup can allow you to have 6dof motion platform to mach terrain, wind pressure etc. Haptics and force feedback hardware like Novint Xio could be attached to "tether" eliminating extra weight issues.

I like it. :) I'm not sure how it does work though, is it active or passive ?

It looks vaguely similar to the CyberCarpet but with bigger balls, but it's not clear what the thing under the platform is for, is it an electric motor ?

    CyberCarpet :

If it's not the case yet and you intend to go electric, you could do it the same way than in the CyberCarpet with a linear belt rotating around the center of the platform.

But I think a better solution for an active platform would be to have parallel rods under the balls, as shown in this picture (mentioned here) :

That's so impressive! both the mat and the harness are worth studying.

When you're ready can you give us a breakdown of what materials were used?

No motors ...think of bottom platform
as plain floor with budget ball transfer bearings (price for 200 good ball transfer bearing will kill any project)..Bigger balls provide bigger contact surface for almost any type of shoes and use more surface to transfer pressure/force while upper setup is contraption to allow user to be semi suspended ( "reduced gravity")... to make sure that I can have as much tactile ability to accelerate run, turn, stop but still remain in same spot and have my gait to be affected by it as less as possible.

If what I made is actually have standing I'm thinking to make video on how to build it.

    As for mats:
    few pvc pipes, pvc connectors
metal hardware , two 250 lb lazy susans, 3 60 lb garage door tension springs
200 golf balls, 4x8 plastic decorative mesh, four posts , one 4x8 good plywood.
used safety harness, mil. surplus pistol belt. more little hardware.
    Inspiring

    Cool work!

The beginning of the video is kind of scary. It reminds me of those "found footage"-style horror movies.

I loce what you have done with it so far, it's low maintenance (no motor) and affordable!

I wonder what it would take to make a system such as this have a variable surface, as in, so you can feel like you're walking up a hill or something like that?
