PS4 Eye

Just saw the data sheet for the new version of the Playstation Eye. It looks pretty impressive. Here's the Google cache because page loads very slowly. The only problem is they apparently aren't planning on selling it as a separate product, and it uses a proprietary cable, not USB (but I bet it's basically USB 3.0).

Basic stats are;
- Stereo cameras
- Slightly improved FOV (85deg diagonal)
- 1280x800 pixel @ 60fps
- 640x400 pixel @ 120fps
- 320x192 pixel @ 240fps

Two synced cameras running at 640x400 at 120fps is very good. I wonder what sort of price they will be.

    I dont know..
Optical analysis is known to be slower.
Furthermore if they are two camera, so 2 images to analyse.

I think the Kinect solution is better but who knows.

The worst ennemy of this, is the input lag.
If your character jump 1second after you jumped, it breaks the immersion and make the games unplayables.

The first things players want is reactivity.

    But maybe i'm wrong...

It depends on what you;re using it for. If you want to reconstruct an arbitrary environment or object, than using the Kinect's depth-map is going to be faster (assuming the new Kinect's internal processing latency is lower than the current Kinect) than using DSLAM or similar with a stereo pair.

But if you constrain what you want to track, for example using IR filters (or bright lights in a dark environment) and tracking a single point, or handful of points, the fixed baseline stereo setup of the PS4eye would likely work out faster and more accurate (and robust) than trying to determine the location of a fiduciary point from a depth map.

Or you could do both! Sit a PS4eye on top of a new Kinect, use the eye and a top-of-head marker to track head position, use the internal IMU to track orientation, and use the Kinect for skeletal tracking for avatar embodiment and limited 1:1 environmental motion.

They're going to offer the new Kinect as a separate purchase for windows down the line, so everyone would be able to use that at some point with the Rift. It will be the better choice since they are going to update the SDK that goes along with it too.

Yup. And they got smarter, they put a proprietary connector on the Xbox One version of the Kinect this time.

The existing Kinect already has a proprietary connector. It's just USB2 and power combined into a custom plug. I think it;s very likely the new Kinect's connector is just USB3 and power combined into a custom plug. It's more likely that Microsoft are using a pre-existing interface for both models than developing two separate models using completely different interfaces (and re-inventing the wheel with a new custom protocol).
