Suggestion for upcomming hardware versions: HDMI audio

A quick and coarse search in the forums brought up no results. So I just would like to throw in that suggestion for one of the upcomming hardware revisions: How about a HDMI audio receiver and headphone amplifier in the HMD to which the user can connect his headphones / earbuds to? This addition would remove another cable you still have to drag around. Also HDMI audio makes it much easier for client programs to sync their audio with the video, because audio and video are transmitted in lockstep.

Not really, no. Added benefits over the cost just wouldn't be there.

Just a guesstimate here, but why put it in when 75% or more of the people that use the headset won't use it? It would be just added fluff.

if you had the option of plugging in your headphones directly into the rift rather then having another cord going to your computer, getting tangled restricting you, etc, you wouldn't take it? The only reason I wouldn't use that in a heartbeat is that my headset is already wireless, and even then, I would be very tempted just to use my earbuds with the rift. It is a simple feature that pretty much anyone can take advantage of.

To me the trade off seems worthwhile.

Wireless headphones are good, but they either have to use Bluetooth and add lag, or tie up an extra USB port (Which are already full on a Macbook Pro with the HMD and Camera).

Wired headphones are a PITA, I already have too many cables coming off my head.

Why would I need to plug in headphones for when I have a set of plyr1's? (wireless headphones)?

Even if I did not have wireless headphones, I have 12 different USB ports for USB headphones, and a headset jack on the front of my computer?

I realize that my computer is a bit beefier than most, so rationally speaking, 4 USB ports on the back of a computer, 2 in front, headphone / mic port in front.

Keyboard, mouse, webcam, RiftCam.. those will be on the back of the computer, headset and earphones on the front. The user may want to install a USB card for added ports for gamepad controllers / hotas / etc..

You want this idea for too many wires, ok.. I get that. But this does not solve the issue of having too many wires. Perhaps a simpler solution would work? How about.. zip ties (or velcro straps for cabling).

Headphones restricting you? How is this any different than having that big ass cable coming from the Rift any different?

ok, you have wireless headphones. Most people don't.

let melook at my wired headphones. Thier cord is... drastically shorter than the rift's . not only would using them pluggged into my computer be am extra cord, and not only would this cord be following a different route than the rift's (from the ears rather than over the head, making it an additional source of awkwardness), I would be severely constrained in where I could sit (to the point of not being able to be 5 feet from the camera, as the guidelines say) and how much I could move around (it is a bit limiting for normal use, even).
The length of the rift's cord is a limit. Adding on a headphone coord would be an unrelated limit.
Sure, not everyone will get a use out of it. Sure, you can function without it. That doesn't mean it doesn't have a value.

It feels almost like some people got longer Rift cables. My headphone cables are easily twice as long as the Rift's. I can move maybe 30cm away from my desk before the Rift cable blocks me, and I even had to remove that 'over-the-head' cable routing to gain that bit of extra length.

The entire reason I went with a wireless headset was because my previous headset's cable was way too long, almost 6ft iirc. It caused several issues with my chair, cable twisting, and general annoyance.

If your headphone's cable is shorter than the Rift's, then you need to stop using phone/mp3 headphones. Get a set of computer headphones.

but then the cords get tangle in the chair and they get destroyed in short order.

As I said, Yes, there are always ways to work around not having a audio port on the rift. That doesn't mean its not useful. I think headphones plugged into the rift will almost always be preferable to another coord reaching the computer.

It might be a good idea on paper, but my headphone cord is still ten feet coiled, so plugging it in three inches from the headphones themselves wouldn't really improve things much. It would make it worse, really, because then all the weight of the cable would be on my head rather than on my desk where it is now.

stick the coord in your pocket
