The Stillness illness...

Just finishing my first weekend working on my first demo scene (which i hope to share with you all soon :D ), its the longest I've used the rift consecutively with lots of trying out my scene as I go and now Im feeling really bad.

I got bad motion sickness from trying the rift for the first time but I thought I had got my 'vr legs' by now. I haven't been effect this bad for a while though, How does everyone else cope when working on something for a long time :?

Most people were pretty adaptive to it, we've taken turns playing TF2 on it for an hour or so sometimes. The times people felt ill it was fast and they were really sensitive to all of the demos, even just walking around and looking at stuff demos for like 2 minutes. Discomfort never lasted longer than 30 minutes or so. Other people (most people) could tolerate any demo (that wasnt crap) until they started doing crazy stuff to induce it on purpose. I haven't done any longer term tests on anyone.

I've played for extended periods myself but thats not a big enough sample base to determine anything conclusive so I don't know if there is a steady discomfort growth over time and if there is if it is related to framerates under 300.

Proper implementation is a huge thing. For the time being it appears to be a bigger deal than ensuring triple digit framerates, but there is a clear increase in discomfort with fps under 60.

so far no demo gave me any problem....I must have some high tolerance for these kind of inputs....
but also don't underestimate the power of placebo effect, especially when trying new things, personally I never read other people reviews before I try something new, apart from basic safety if it's the case....:)

There's surely different thresholds to getting seasick. While I had to be careful with turning in crashland (and used the hydras for most rotations and the joystick only if really neccessary) my wife was rotating like crazy with the joysticks and didn't want me to show her how to use the hydras instead. And she was feeling comfortable.

Don't watch oculus videos on a oculus, because your head movements do not correspond with the movements that were recorded. When I first got the dk1, I immediately went to youtube, and watched the numerous videos. I got seriously sick, and nauseous. But I can easily spend 20 minutes in the tuscany world demo.

    What ratio approximately?

It wouldn't surprise me if my 350 fps (on intel integrated graphics) game makes you sick then! ;)

BTW, what PC setup do you have? How many fps do you get in HL2 with the rift?

snappy rotations have been prooven to cause less motion sickness. but that is inner ear sickness, my problem is low fps headache...

Does it make a difference? We already talked about framerates.
