Viiwok - Virtual treadmill & reality simulator.

Hi all, I'm a young systems engineer from Spain with a passion for architecture, topography, surveilling, photogrammetry and gaming.

In about 2 weeks I'll be launching an IndieGogo campaign (I'm european so I can't submit projects for KickStarter) for a similar product, a treadmill simulator that would have the added advantage that all the sensors would be built in (walking, turning, jumping, crouching) at 120 Hz response frequency (basically zero latency/lag, the same you have from using a keyboard/mouse combo).

You wouldn't need a Kinect or a Hydra at an added cost and you wouldn't need to wear those Virtuix special shoes to be able to slide, like in the Virtuix or the cvasi-walk like with the WizDish. You'd be able to crouch properly, instead of bending. You'd be able to sit down when you get tired after all that moving around.

The system is natively compatible with any platform - Windows, Mac OSX and Linux are supported out of the box, no special drivers needed, you plug it in and it's set to go. And most of all, the price would be around 250€.

The concept is orientated towards virtual exploration and tourism (real monuments, historic sites and other places of interest modeled and rendered using powerful gaming engines like the CryEngine) but FPS gamers would find it quite tight in addition to the Oculus, whenever the latter will be launched. Until then, players would be able to shoot ahead without an Oculus, using a normal monitor screen or a HDTV, since everything would be motion ready and fitted with all the necesary sensors.

Stay tuned for more details.

Youtube demos to follow and other details on http://www.viiwok.com during the next few weeks.

Has there been any offer from Virtuix to stop Attreyu from discussing further on his design prior to omni kickstarter finish?

I don't think so because he was talking about it a few days into the start of the kickstarter and Jan (founder of Virtuix) even came on this forum for a little. Otherwise, if he was asked to shush for a while, I guess he would have told us that he can't talk for a little.

virtuix sensors in the shoes. Looks familiar, Viiwok anyone?

    Hope they collaborate

Sensors in the shoes is pretty much the same idea everyone has had ever since accelerometers hit the market. Viiwok / Virtuix / or whoever really can't take credit for that one. Just go to the App Store and count the 100 and one pedometer apps.

As for Omnidirectional treadmills, they have existed long before the Virtuix / wizdish / etc. The first dish treadmill was actually patented in 1956. A dish treadmill as a VR input device was actually used in the 1995 movie, Disclosure.

The only real tweak that Virtuix has done is the inward groves with the plunge pin in the shoe.

The virtuix folks are doing a good job of capitalizing on the hype, though. We must all give them that.

I'm here guys. Everything is going according to plan. There was no offer from Virtuix but we had a private gentleman's agreement. There was also a little dispute on the mtsb forum with someone accusing me on wanting to cash in somehow on the omni feedback. This are the reasons for staying low. By Monday I will have a video with the prototype running. There will be analogic input mounted on the viiwok and there will be a smartphone solution for the ones with newer phones. This will make it a 2 tier pricing scheme. Neither will be over 300 for the final product. 250 for the developer models. 200 for the early birds. If the campaign is going well I will commit myself to a september date for development model and a final one ready for shipping before and by Christmas.

Dude! There will ALWAYS be people crawling out of the woodwork to attack any innovative idea that is not their own. This happens all too frequently even to the best doers and makers and creators and producers. And also much too frequently, the naysayers have very little to show of their own beneficial accomplishments.

Don't let the ankle-biters get you down! (I am still learning that lesson myself).

I'm a Kickstarter user here in the US, I've donated a lot of money to projects including my $400 to get an Omni! If you're interested in getting it on Kickstarter let me know and we can talk (:

Just so you guys know, Attreyu had an accident playing soccer (football) the other day:

"I've broken my ankle in 3 places, dislocated with multiple fracture on the tibia and displacement of the fibula. Tomorrow I'll go into surgery to insert titanium screws. 6 weeks in recovery. Sorry guys. Ah, I've fallen playing football, not testing the Viiwok "

But the man is a trooper!! Check out what he posted a while later:

"I've modified the design radically. In total it weighs less than 10 Kg, probably around 5 Kg. It's super portable, almost doesn't take up any space, you'll be able to take it anywhere, even outdoors."

I think his latest posts here at the Oculus VR forum are more recent than the ones I translated above. Still, I thought it would be useful to know the stuff he's been through :o
