VR Gloves (my project)

Hey everyone,

I know I've had my vr glove project under my projects for a while, but recently I've been having more free time and actually got started working on it the last week or so. The idea is to use accelerometers, gyros, flex/bend sensors, potentiometers (volume knobs) and maybe a joystick, to make a highly accurate, non-laggy virtual reality glove. This first draft will be the proof of concept just to show what I mean. It uses and arduino leonardo (at least now it does), as well as the sensors mentioned above. At the moment, it's just writing all of the sensor data to a serial connection, then unity is reading that data (threaded so the game doesn't lag if it's to slow) and applying it in real time.

I wasn't sure if I should post it here yet, as I don't even have the elbow movement up and running quite yet. (Sensor is there, just I haven't built the elbow joint. This will be two plastic bars held together with a potentiometer to get how open the arm is.) but it's looking go so far, I think at least.

I still need to add the other two main fingers also, as well, the thumb has no input (first draft at least will be a joystick)

Let me know what you think! I'm hoping to get the elbow hooked up properly soon to be able to make a basic demo.

Here's the two videos I've made so far. Nothing spectacular, but still.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--cOVZdpkWM - First video. Arduino Duemilinove (6 analog inputs), only one accelerometer and two flex sensors
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=um3JUnARQQQ - Second video. Arudino Leonardo (12 analog inputs), two accelerometers, two flex sensors, and a potentiometer for elbow.

To Do List:
Craft elbow plastics and attach potentiometer and tilt sensor to it.
Add in other two flex sensors.
Create mount for thumbstick.
Add in thumbstick.
Make full demo project including picking up stuff as well as detailed actions (opening doors, windows, flushing toilet, things like that.)

:D Got the sensors for christmas. Now to figure out i2c communication and rig up the new sensors, then to get all the data in unity, then to make stuff move :D Simple process, really.

Plus is, new sensors are accelerometer AND a gyro :D So awesome.

Anyway, hopefully I can get most of it working this weekend. I'll make another video if I do.

I'm looking forward to the video.

You know, I really don't get people who say stuff like "why would I need VR gloves, I have a Hydra" and such. That's like saying, "why would I need head tracking, I have a mouse" or something similarly absurd. I bought a Wii when they first came out because I thought "this could revive interest in VR" and because I thought it was a cool toy. I never thought "why would I need VR gloves, I have a Wiimote" and I still don't think that.

Anyways, for various reasons, I'm really hoping you succeed.

What about sensor positioning towers or poles with suction cups on the bases. If your only tracking hand and fingertip movement and its position the pole have to be as tall as u can reach upwards sitting. When I was younger and imagined what vr would be like I always pictured myself in empty room with sensors in the corners. The poles could contain sensor in the base and tip. Any movement inside the triangle of the poles could be mapped in 3d. For this you wouldn't use magnets each point you wanted to be able to track would need a different signature to be tracked. Sound waves could do this each point having a different frequencey. With this you could really do full body sensors but the poles would have to be floor to ceiling. Tracking joint movement with just a single sensor. A velcro spot on each point on your body u wish to track with a sensor you can stick to yourself. Just like they do for sports games with the little white balls on the spandex suit but no gay suit needed. The problem people are facing is cost but their are plenty of places in china that will give you the price you would need to produce large amounts of the device. At this stage occulus is not yet a household name like Xbox but if they play their cards right the future will be theirs. They are thinking too small they could very well create the next console. An Xbox is just a controller. All the consoles do the same thing play data on a screen and the controller let's you manipulate it. Occulus has done something none of them have. No TV needed. You can't buy and Xbox out of the box as is and play with it you need an assortment of things to play it comfortably. Occulus could put 900$ price tag on itself. Imagine putting the goggle on plug in a PC or their own console design stick 3 poles around you and put on some gloves and walah I can interact with and environment. The issue now make it all wireless battery's gotta go somewhere.
If you can fund it, I can create my dreams! Including and emp weapon just send me a million dollars and give me 6 months.

Sorry guys, no video yet, I haven't figured out i2c yet (two wire communication). It's taking a bit to get my head wrapped around it. I hope I have the extra time tonight to get it up and running. If anything, I don't have anything planned this weekend.... that I remember anway....

Hope to get something up soon though.

Would you be interested in coming on our Google hang out this Saturday for a chat on arduino based input devices?

Sure, depending on the time anyway, I have an appointment to get new glasses on saturday at 10:45 am central us time, so it all depends on what time.

As far as I'm aware, the time is fine. And I would say I live nowhere close to texas. I live in St. Louis, MO.

Update time! Got the basic forward/backword tilting, as well as the side roll, just like before now working! YAY!!!.... but past that, I used the gyro to get spinning working! What's that mean? Well, watch the video :D
