Will this spec be pretty future proof?

First off, thanks in advance for any advice ;)

Okay, so... I'm having a couple of PCs put together for Oculus and also some other 360 deg video/VR stuff, for work.

I'm looking at the spec below and wondered if anyone currently using DK2 thinks the below spec will be pretty decent both in terms of the current need and also future-proofing for the next couple of years to 3 yrs.

One thing I really kept changing my mind about was the CPU, going from the 6700k 4 core vs the 6 core that I (think!) I decided on below... Partly on the advice of the company I'm buying from (happy to say who I'm buying from, but not pasted yet in case it's seen as advertising!).

I'm pretty confident the GPU is a good option, but just wanted others thoughts (SSD for a data drive may seem odd, but I'll be moving the PC around at times, so prefer this for robustness/lack of spinning platters & head crash risks).

I'm running CMK16GX4M4A2800C16 (Corsair Vengeance LPX, 16GB, 4 sticks of 4) with an ASUS X99 Deluxe. These sticks are on the QVL and do run at 2800 without issue. Check the memory section of the MOBO Manual for the QVL listing.

Cool, thanks again to everyone for their input, much appreciated!

I went with the following spec in the end (slightly tweaked version of the OP)...

Case COOLERMASTER CM690 III ADVANCED CASE (GREEN)
    Memory (RAM) 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3000MHz X.M.P (4 x 4GB)

Thanks all again for all the help!

Love the look of that case! I went with the Corsair Obsidian 750D which looks very similar. Were you able to get the Zotac 980 TI?

Ah okay, cool - thanks for the tip!

Where's the QVL to be found, so I can check Corsair models etc?

    Thanks :)

Don't take that Kingston Ram, go for Corsair with that MoBo. Kingston will not work reliable and is not in QVL

    pretty much my rig (X99-PRO)
    https://www.asus.com/de/Motherboards/X99A/HelpDesk_QVL/

had it with kingston ram first, but was not stable. btw: love my fractal design define (watercooler version with not watercooler installed, but open at top so heat can flow from the case)

ps: mine does 4,45GHz, but I did only once for testing, not worth it...

pps: all 2800 ram will run at 2800, but since the memory controller is on the CPU, you also will overclock the memory controller and this will only work if you are lucky. so i bought (more) cheap 2400er ram - the case when your calculation is memory speed limited will not occure, and you might gain an overall speedup of 1-5% by overclocking memory...

ppps: i love seasonic power supplys, Noctua NH-D15S aircooled.. go for aircooled if you want a silent system, watercooled is more for overclocking than silent.

Thanks for the post :) Some interesting info :D

The above rig has been ordered & paid for now, so I can't make any more changes at this point. Still, interesting info, so thanks :)

I can't wait for it to arrive... but I'll have to :D They can't deliver until early Jan, so a bit of a wait for me!

Should have gone for Samsung 950 Pro as OS drive, the SM951 is the previous gen model.
