Wireless Rift - Yes another one.

So i am currently busy turning my Rift in to a wireless master piece.
All the setup has been done and im currently testing battery life, however there must be a better way then to use batteries.
Currently i need 12 batteries, to run the rift wireless (4 for the Rift, and 8 for the wireless HDMI device).
Does anyone have some advice for me which i can try out to replace the batteries with something else?

Current progress:
Testing battery life on the Wireless HDMI device (Currently running on 8 batteries for 1 hour and 13 minutes (lets see how long they last)).

I highly doubt ill get more then 2/3 hours of battery life on the HDMI device so 8 batteries for 3 hours (estimate) seems a little to steep i think. That is like 5 dollars per session for the HDMI device only (Rift not calculated yet).

Definetly the first thing will be rechargeable batteries, but are there other solutions which i should try out?

Thanks for your time.

    I'm quite sure you will end having back issues carrying a backpack with a notebook (heat + EMI), what about the PS3/PS4 and XBOX's?

    Believe me we are trying to improve it not to knock it down.

    I dont know .. I'm not a console man so I wouldnt be using the rift with xbox or ps3 or 4 .. but your right, im sure atlas has its limits.

    Has anyone seen any videos of a wireless rift being setup and used using wireless HDMI?

    Hi guys,

    we decided that a DYI wireless kit is the best option to be implemented. We will only ask for support buying through our website the kits. Any advice?

    Definitely interested to see your dev kit I might hold off a bit to see what you have there. =)

    I have also been toying with the wireless setups. Its appears the wavi is best product currently available for implementation. According to the product notes it is capable of 3Gbps transfer speed which should be good enough for 1080p version of the Rift. Im not looking to market my product but I need it to be wireless for my game.

    Im a complete noob in programming, im an EE student and in between homework ive been following tutorials for blender 3d.
    Im currently attempting to build a to scale model of my house. Ive measured the entire house, and using microsoft paint I did an entire floor plan with locations of all furniture and walls. Id like my spawn point to be at my desk and with wireless I can then move about my house completely rifted.

    The goal here is to not run into walls or other things in the house, then replace said walls with cool in game things.

    Initial goal is to build the house in game with nothing but walls. Directly from my desk is a perfectly straight 15 foot hallway with no furniture.
    ,
    For tracking purposes I plan to use my kinect camera. Im going to try to use the kinect to map my hallway and then ise that data as an overlay ontop of my in game hallway. If this works then I could use the camera sensors to track my location in realtime as active location for the OVRCharacterController(CameraController?)

    Lofty goals, I know. And as I said before im a complete noob, ive always wanted to try and make a game but after buying the dev kit is the first time ive actively pursued any kind of programming.

    With blender I should be able to port it over to unity and use the oculus camera settings, is this correct?

    How do you manage the power supply of the HDMI receiver?
    I'm working on a project which uses Blender Game Engine, Kinect and of course Oculus Rift.
    I don't plan to port to Unity since I was extremly disappointed that I should pay for testing.

    If you want to share details send a PM.

    My starting points are:

    I already managed to integrate this in Windows 7

    For Kinect I currently check:

    I tried the prototype today, working in bridging USB communications. Wireless HDMI seems pretty straight trhu.

    Just chiming in to report that I've tried my Rift using the following USB battery pack & cable with no problems whatsoever.

    Cable --> http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003MQO96U/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Battery pack --> http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BJBX132/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    The battery will output a total of 3A spread between it's 4x connectors so it should be able to power the Rift as well as an Android device (I have an ODROID U2 that I want to use, but that will have to wait until there is proper Android support from Oculus).

    This is extremely similar to what I want to achieve, except I want to have a webcam feed fed into the Rift that allows you to see your real surroundings in addition to whatever the in-game walls have been replaced with - I'm interested in the concept of simultaneous presence in two environments, one real & one virtual (so not quite the same as augmented reality). I've gotten as far as making a (very simple) 3D model in Maya of the university building that I work in & quickly attaching a webcam to the top of the Rift to get the webcam feed, the video might give you a better idea;

    But I am stumped on how to track the user's position within the building well. I've done lots of research into this, Rainer Mautz' 2012 habilitation thesis is a good overview of the state of different indoor positioning technologies;

    http://www.igp.ethz.ch/GSEG/people/rmautz (scroll down to the publications section)

    I wanted to use an ultrasonic solution, but these are far too expensive for me. The MIT Cricket system is £1400 for 8x motes & I would need more than a hundred to cover the area of the building I want to use. I got a quote from Sonitor, who provide a commercial ultrasonic solution but that was £25k for the same area. I thought about using a PlayStation Move controller attached to the user & then having cameras in rooms/hallways to track it but it simply doesn't work in brightly illuminated office conditions.

    I also tried very simply ultrasonic range sensors connected to Arduinos which I would then mount onto the ceiling, to see if I could just determine which Arduino the user was beneath, but there were far too many false positives with the signals reflecting & bouncing around.

    I'm now looking at using a camera mounted on the rift to track markers applied to the ceiling, maybe using Visp or OpenCV. I'm not sure how well using a camera to track the shape of rooms/corridors would work in my environment, where there are lots of people walking around & lots of identical offices!

    But now that I have the battery for the Rift working, I think I'm just going to wait until people have gone home tonight & then try it out around the building using a laptop in my bag & an xbox controller to manually walk around & get a feel for it.

    Do let me know of any progress you make & I'm more than happy to bounce ideas around with you sometime if you fancy :)

    Update: I decided to check the IndoorAtlas project, which I had pretty much written off as vaporware because they hadn't published any details or responded to any messages in so long, and was pleasantly surprised to see that they have an open beta up. I gave it a quick go & was quite impressed at how well it works so far.
