Game update can be accidentally cancelled without confirmation
Summary
While downloading a large update for Golf+, I accidentally cancelled the entire download simply by selecting the game tile. There was no confirmation that I wanted to cancel the download, and the visual indication that the tile action would cancel rather than open the game was extremely difficult to see.
In this case, the update was approximately 28 GB and I had already downloaded roughly 27.5 GB before accidentally cancelling it.
Steps to reproduce
- Start downloading a large game update.
- Put the headset down and allow the download to continue.
- Return later and check the download progress.
- From notifications/alerts, selecting the game allows you to view/open the game experience while the download is still in progress to see status.
- Return to the main interface and select the game's normal tile while the download is still active.
- Instead of opening the game or showing its download status, this interaction cancels the download.
- No confirmation is presented before the download is cancelled.
Actual behaviour
Selecting the game tile while an update is downloading cancelledl the download immediately.
The only indication of this destructive action appears to be a very subtle X/cancel affordance on the tile. The X has extremely low visual prominence and was difficult for me to notice despite having no known visual impairment.
There is also inconsistent behaviour depending on where the game is selected:
- Selecting the game through an alert/notification can take you into the game/download experience.
- Selecting the normal game tile can cancels the download.
These two entry points appear to represent the same game but produce dramatically different results.
Expected behaviour
A standard game tile should not unexpectedly become a destructive control simply because an update is in progress.
At minimum:
- Selecting the tile should open the game's download/update status.
- Cancelling should require an explicit, clearly labelled cancel action.
- A destructive action that discards a large partially completed download should require confirmation, such as "Cancel download?"
- The cancel control should meet appropriate accessibility contrast and visibility requirements.
- Behaviour should be consistent regardless of whether the game is accessed from a notification or from its normal library/home tile.
User impact
In my case, I unintentionally cancelled approximately 27.5 GB of a 28 GB download, requiring essentially the entire update to be downloaded again.
For users with slower internet connections, bandwidth limits, or data caps, this interaction could have a significant impact beyond simple inconvenience.
This feels particularly problematic because the consequences of the action are substantial while the visual affordance communicating that action is extremely subtle and there is no confirmation before the destructive action occurs.
