Question

How do I access the meta quest device name or id

Hi!  Hopefully someone has solved this problem - I'm looking to log some information to a cloud database and I need to access and log the device Id.

The ID I'm looking for isn't accessed via "SystemInfo.deviceUniqueIdentifier", nor is it SystemInfo.deviceModel, deviceName, or deviceType.

The ID I'm looking for is the same ID that shows up in the Meta Horizon Managed Services devices list.  It's a 14 digit device Id like "1WMHH6666V0335".  I'm looking to access this Id in Unity.  Can someone tell me what property I'm looking for?  I think this might be the SERIAL number.

Thanks for your time!

The serial number of Rift S headsets begin with 1WM, so it's definitely a serial number.

Same issue here. SystemInfo.deviceUniqueIdentifier is not usable. It returns a different value after each reinstall.

We need the serial number to authenticate devices against our server. We tried retrieving it from a file dropped by Meta Work in /storage/emulated/0/Managed files/, but that approach requires MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE which Meta Work cannot auto-grant in Work profile.

We've tried reading that file via:

  • Directory.GetFiles() with READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE - returns 0 files (scoped storage, Android 12)
  • MediaStore.Files with various columns (_data, _display_name, title) - 0 rows, Managed files/ is not indexed by MediaStore
  • WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE - deprecated since Android 11, no effect

The only working solution so far is granting MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE manually via adb shell appops set, which is not scalable.

Has anyone found a way to read the device serial number directly from Unity/Android APIs without relying on MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, or a way to have Meta Work grant that permission in a Work profile?
