Question

Immersive app exit always shows the grey Home transition, even with a passthrough Home. Can it go straight back to MR Home?

Hi everyone,

We publish Sound Voyages VR on the Meta Horizon Store: a seated, immersive 360° video app built with Unity 6.3 (6000.3.10f1) and OpenXR with the Meta OpenXR feature group, on HorizonOS v207, tested on Quest 3. Our menu runs over passthrough.

App launch is already seamless. With com.oculus.ossplash.background set to passthrough, logcat shows isPassthroughTransition: true and the user goes straight from their passthrough Home into our passthrough menu.

App exit is the problem. Even when the user's Home is passthrough (mr_home_world, passthroughHomeVisible: true), closing the app always shows about 2.3 seconds of the grey world-travel transition before passthrough comes back:

ProcessImmersiveTransitionEvent: Start Transition for package: com.oculus.vrshell

isPassthroughTransition: false, shouldUnloadHome: true

isWorldTravelActive: TRUE ... EnvironmentBlendModeHelper: com.oculus.vrguardianservice -> OPAQUE

What we checked:

- Another standalone 360 player from the Store with the same structure (Unity, a single activity, category VR) behaves exactly the same: about 2.3 s of grey.

- Meta's own 360 playback (com.oculus.horizonmediaplayer) exits straight to MR Home in about 150 ms (MR_APP -> MR_HOME). Its manifest declares com.oculus.feature.BOUNDARYLESS_APP.

- We tried adding BOUNDARYLESS_APP plus com.oculus.permission.BOUNDARY_VISIBILITY. The app did switch to MR mode, but the exit still travelled through the grey world. We also removed it again because we weren't sure it is allowed for a Store app like ours.

Questions:

1. Is there a supported way, such as a manifest flag, an OpenXR call before quitting, or a Store-approved capability, for a standalone immersive app to exit directly to a passthrough Home without the world-travel transition?

2. If BOUNDARYLESS_APP is the intended route, does it need Meta's approval for a Store app, and what else does the exit path require?

3. If not, is the hybrid approach (a 2D panel activity as the entry point) the recommended one?

We are entering the Start Developer Competition, and a clean "back to your room" exit matters a lot for a lean-back, seated experience. Logs available on request.

Thanks!
