Question

Meta AI app won't start on iPhone: "Something went wrong" (Ray-Ban Display)

Hello. My Meta AI app fails to start on my iPhone. On the launch screen "Get started with Meta AI" I get the error "Something went wrong. Please wait and try again later". Both "Get started with Meta AI" and "Set up a device" fail.

Details: iPhone, iOS 26.3.1, App Store region US, Meta AI 296.1.0 (also fails on 296.0.0), VPN Netherlands and without VPN, clean reinstall done. I can log in to my account on meta.com, so the account itself works and is not restricted.

The glasses are not blocked: another phone was able to connect to them. Please advise how to get the Meta AI app working, how to re-pair the glasses to my phone, and how to retrieve the photos and videos stored on the glasses (I want to avoid losing them).

Device: Meta Ray-Ban Display, serial 4V37W3212100V3, model RW4012, FCC ID 2AVOA-4003. Purchased in Russia, so serial lookup says "No device found".

Update (Oct 29): I am now logged in with the owner account (mail.ru address) and Meta support still answers "No device found" for serial 4V37W3212100V3, and the account shows no linked devices at all. Reason: the glasses were bought on a marketplace (not in Meta Store), so Meta has no order record for them.

Also confirmed on this forum: the same "Something went wrong" started for other users on Oct 2 with app version 292.1.0 (the Muse Spark redesign), so this looks like a server-side issue, not a device problem. Please advise the safe way to re-link the glasses to an account while keeping the videos stored on them.

Update (Oct 29, 21:00): I did everything - deleted the Meta AI app, removed the glasses from iPhone Bluetooth, factory reset the glasses and the charging case, reinstalled Meta AI from the US App Store and logged in. The app still shows the same error right on the welcome screen: "Something went wrong. Please wait and try again later." above the "Get started with Meta AI" / "Set up a device" buttons. So the failure happens before login and is not caused by stale app data, Bluetooth pairing or the glasses themselves.

The glasses are now unpaired and factory reset, so no media is lost. Please advise: is there a known outage or a server-side issue with the Muse Spark onboarding? Does the app start with a brand new Meta account, and does it require a specific account region or VPN location?

One more finding: Meta's own help pages state that Meta Ray-Ban Display is currently supported only in the United States (contiguous), Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, and that the AI features are limited to specific cities in those countries. Russia is not on that list, and the glasses were bought on a Russian marketplace, so there is no Meta Store order for the serial.

So I would like to confirm: is the "Something went wrong" on the welcome screen (before login, after a clean install and a full factory reset of the glasses) a region eligibility check for Meta Ray-Ban Display? And if so, what is the officially supported way to use Display hardware bought in an unsupported country - can the glasses be activated and paired when the app, the phone region and the network are all set to the United States?
