Porting an enterprise Android app to Horizon OS and the 2027 Meta VR Glasses
Hi Meta team,
I’m a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) at Atheer. We’re evaluating Meta VR hardware for Atheer Lens, our app for industrial technicians. Our use cases include guided Jobs, AI Copilot assistance, and remote collaboration through AiR Sessions.
For this discussion, we’re focusing on adapting our existing Android app for hands-free remote assistance. A remote expert needs to see the technician’s live camera feed, while the technician sees their physical equipment alongside expert video, annotations, and live captions. Our existing experience also includes recording, screenshots, and saved transcripts.
Before choosing POC hardware or making changes to our existing apps, we would appreciate guidance on:
1. Compatibility with the new VR Glasses
Do the Meta VR Glasses announced for 2027 support Horizon OS and the existing Android app porting approach? Can you share device-specific documentation and any differences from Quest?
2. Reusing our Android app
Can we begin with our existing Android app in a 2D window, or would this use case require Spatial SDK? What compatibility restrictions apply to video-calling libraries, authentication, Google Play Services, and background processing?
3. Live camera sharing and expert video
Can a third-party app transmit the outward-facing camera feed to our remote-assistance service while simultaneously displaying incoming expert video and supporting two-way audio? We need access to camera frames, not just passthrough visible to the wearer.
4. Annotations and hands-free interaction
Can expert annotations overlay a video/image or stay attached to physical equipment? Can technicians launch the app, start or accept calls, take screenshots, and end sessions using supported voice, hand, or eye input?
5. Recording and captions
Can we retain our existing recording, transcription, and caption services? Are there restrictions on transmitting or recording headset camera data and capturing app content?
6. POC and code isolation
Which currently available Quest device would be appropriate for an initial POC, and what work would transfer to the 2027 VR Glasses? Is there a recommended way to isolate VR adaptations from our existing Android phone and other-device support?
7. Enterprise deployment
Can we distribute the app privately to enterprise customers? What options are available for company-managed accounts, shared devices, fleet management, controlled updates, and commercial support on the new hardware?
Please distinguish capabilities available today from those in limited preview or planned for the future. Documentation, sample apps, and guidance on evaluation hardware or an enterprise technical contact would be very helpful.
Thank you.
