Unity 4 Month Trial

I hope this is the correct place for this thread, however I have a possible problem with the activation of my 4 month free trial of Unity 4.

When I activated the trial code, the Unity Editor stated that I would only be able to use Unity Pro for the standard 30 days rather than the full 4 months I was promised. I also cannot seem to view when the trial will end within the editor (I'm hoping this is just a semantic issue and my trial will actually last the 125 days as promised).

Did anyone else have this problem when activating their Unity 4 month trial? Should I worry or take some action?

Thanks.

    13 days? That's strange.

I guess keep using it and let us know if it runs out.

Activated mine 8 days ago, said 21 days left. Perhaps all/some of these licenses were mass activated the start of April?

Activated mine today and received a 10 day trial, as you might expect. I guess we will all find out in 10 days?

Mine says "Welcome to your 9 day demo". Should I have registered for the 30 day demo first?

I thought these keys were generated and dated when we activated them, but it looks like they had been active for a lot longer. I guess we'll all find out in 9 days.

Once these run out, are our only options paying $1500 once, or the $75 a month subscription? Both really expensive to me. Anyone know any other options?

It would suck big time if unactivated keys expired before people got their Rift.

It would have been nice to know if these unused keys had an undocumented expiration date, with a warning to activate them while they still have their full time period left on them.

I plan to activate mine in about a month when I will have some time to use it. I hope it is still good then.

Not that I know of. The subscription is a bad, bad deal IMO... better to just fork over the $1500 if you're serious about using Unity. If you're on the fence about it, could always work on your game for free without the Rift plugin to see if you like the engine.

I had the same opinion when I first read it, but it's not as bad as it seems. You don't have to pay for updates, so when version 5 comes out you can just use it straight away at no extra cost, just keep going month by month.

This is very likely to work out more expensive in the long run of course, but like you said you do need to be serious about your Unity development to fork over the $1,500 straight up. Committing to smaller $75 payments each month to a minimum of $900 is a bit easier to do, especially if you can then get some returns on your development in that first year to justify the full cost.

Professionally though, Unity is very cheap. I've seen software which cost a whole lot more and do a whole lot less. The requirement for a Pro licence for hobbyists/indie devs to play with the Rift is a real bummer. Unity could go and solve this by adding native Rift support to their engine, removing the requirement to load the external DLLs. That would be fantastic.

It's not that I'm on the fence, it's just that is it unlikely my Unity projects will every become more than a hobby. I have been playing with Unity for a couple of years now, all developing VR applications, but I have never needed Pro before. It is a big spend for a hobby.

You can purchase Unity much cheaper (Mostly yearly subs) from Resellers providing you are eligible. Here's a list of approved Resellers in their respective regions: https://store.unity3d.com/reseller
