Where is the trial code?

I'm probably missing something obvious, but where is the code for the 4-month free trial for Unity Pro? I don't see it in the documentation or anywhere in the SDK box. Hmm... I wrote Unity about it last week and they said the SDK should come with a code.

 i love unity so far but what they now do is just rude. 2 month working in unity and now i go back to udk. lol

thanks for the update but please dont use the word patient anymore. Its not like we are kids waiting for christmas. this just stops developing content for the rift. im 100 % sure its unitys fault, sooo as cartman would say it: Screw you Unity, im going back to UDK!

You know... I'd figure after a month or two most people would have their control system pretty down pat. In that case, you can keep developing with unity free, just without the oculus for the moment. You can't legally sell anything made during the trial period. In fact, you aren't even suppose to distribute it to people outside of your company. (Not that the Unity people care, as long as you aren't selling it.)

You'd have to buy a pro license before selling anything, so the only thing really holding you back, in all honesty is you. Sure, you can't test out the real time lighting, nor can you test out the oculus, but you can build your levels, script your ai, doors, guns, etc, all without the use of unity pro.

Yes, they should have the codes out by this point, but really, if you can't do anything in your game with unity free, then you don't have a bright future as a game developer. In fact, you should probably get your game working without the oculus and running well, much earlier in development then adding in the oculus. At the moment, not even 10,000 people have their rifts, so there isn't even a large market for it.

I think you all may be getting stuck on the novelty of the rift and not realize that at this point it's not a make it or break it feature. Sure, it's nice, but if you don't have a game that plays well without the rift, then your game won't make any form of enough money to justify the creation of the game.

You aren't in the wrong for wanting the trial, but if you are limiting your development pending on the trial, which you can't even sell anything with, then you really need to rethink your strategy toward game development. Rift is not a required feature, nor will it be in the next 2 or 3 years. However cool it may be, the general public isn't going to buy the rift until the commercial release, and for a while, most will consider it a gimmick, so don't worry about it too much until you have your game mostly developed.

If you are wanting something free, don't complain it's taking to long to get to you.

(Sorry if this sounds harsh, but honestly, your game shouldn't be dependent on a trial. If you used the 1 month trial and think it's the way you want to go, quit whining and buy the tool you intend to use. $1,500 is a very small amount for what the unity engine delivers, and if you can't put down that much for the core engine, then you probably aren't being serious about your development. I should also mention that threats of going to UDK instead are silly. The Oculus people don't really care a ton what engine you use, cause you are still using the rift. Sorry for being blunt, but it's the truth.)

Something that Oculus have been saying all along is that designing games for VR is a different ball game, and developers have to go back and rediscover what works and what does not. Everything from input mechanisms, UI etc…

I haven't had my Rift for a 'month or two' so I have not figured out the balance of how my game should work. Ive had it for a couple of weeks, and this is not enough time for me to get my control system 'down pat'.

I do agree with you though, when my trial expires I will continue to work with Unity Free. But will feel rather restrained.

I have asked in this topic because I would like to know an ETA. If they say within a couple of weeks, then ill hold on, if much longer ill just go ahead and buy the license.

Good news. We've made some progress with finalizing the trial codes.

I still don't have an ETA yet, but it should be soon. I know we keep saying that, but it's coming.

Hell yeah this sounds harsh! :D i see your point BUT
Right now im working on a game that supports oculus rift AND the razer hydra(also requires pro). so you just said the reason why im whining: Im not going to make money off this. Just a few people have the razer hydra and the rift so im doing this because i believe in VR and for FUN. so right now i wont putting 1500 dollar in to this project. i havent even tried the rift. and as a student i dont always have that much money . I just want to keep on developing with the razer hydra and it would definiately suck that once my rift would arrive my 1 month license would be expired :(. so yeah once im sure that i can make some money with it, ill buy the license.

btw: my comment seems also pretty harsh. I just wanted to point out that unity is kind of beeing rude to oculus not to me as a customer.i think Its not hard that they just give them the codes.

I'm sure there's a fair amount of business politics as to why they haven't gotten it out yet. Also, since you are a student, you are actually in more luck then you may have known. You can get a full 100% commercial license of unity for only $750, as long as you can present a student ID.

You can check out the addons and everything else here:

Hope that helps you some. And while I can see your standpoint of not intending to make money off of it, the large majority of people buying the rift. I wasn't aiming my post at anyone specifically, but the whole of people complaining about it.

That all said, Vireio works with unity free to give you at least the distortion, and I'll be coming out with a system that sends the sensordata through a pipeline to unity. I haven't decided on if I'm going to release it for free or not, but it is working to a point. (I can send data to unity like I want, but I don't have my rift, so I can't test it.) Just have to wait for me to get my rift for that. (Just a side note, if I did end up selling it, I'd probably sell it for $75-$100, I just haven't decided yet whether to sell it or not.)

Yep if you subscribe to the Oculus updates you should by now have an email explaining how to get your code when your order status has gone to 'processing' :D

Finally! Thank goodness. Here is the excerpt from the email:

Unity Pro trial extension codes are available now on the Oculus Order Manager for all orders marked ‘Shipped’.

You can claim your trial extension by logging into the Oculus Order Manager, locating the Unity Pro trial extension section, and clicking the ‘Claim Code’ button. You can redeem the code within the Unity Pro editor by following the instructions here: http://unity3d.com/unity/activation

To all the Oculus developers with an expired Unity Pro trial: Sorry it took us so long to get these out to you. Go forth, and build the Unity VR content of the future!
