v.79 PTC Release Thread

Hey Everyone,

The Public Test Channel (PTC) for Quest v79 started to roll out today for Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S.

If you're seeing an issue or bug after updating to PTC v79:

1) For issues: Go to our Get Help board and search for any existing thread on the issue, if you don't find one, make a new thread. Please add the tag "PTC v79" to the thread and in the title. This way everyone can look for just PTC v79 issues too.

2) For bugs: If you come across a bug, please post each one you spot in its own thread, to keep track of individual issues separately. Please make sure to also send in bug reports along with posting on the forums if you notice anything going wrong.

Share your impressions in the comments below and let us know if you see any issues.

We know it's tough when you run into a problem on a PTC build and want to thank you all again for testing out PTC and sharing your feedback! This feedback is extremely helpful to our engineering teams. We appreciate your interest and persistence in testing out the core functionality of software as we develop!

Outline VPN doesn't connects in the background, so Quest 3 has no ability to check if developer mode is enabled, and Unknown Sources tab in the left menu is not showing up. So consequentially I have no ability to restart the VPN app to use my Quest 3 with full functionality. Region-specific stuff, I know

v79 (general release ) is downloading as I type this. Let's see if it actually installs.

I bet it doesn't fix the overly long shutdown and my Meta AI voice stuck on "low, even"

I wonder new things will be broken.

Please do keep us informed. I've gotten scared of immediately downloading the public release at this stage until I'm sure there won't be any major issues. Appreciate the information !

When will Meta address the issue of background audio from apps being paused when entering passthrough mode? This has been a bug for several versions now ever since v76 and no developer has ever given a word on it, in spite of my multiple bug reports and several other posts on this forum mentioning the same issue. Being able to still hear what was going on in-game while you were taking a peak around your room was an extremely useful feature, I do not understand why it's taking this long for this issue to even begin to be acknowledged, much less corrected.

I confirm that everyone I know has the same problem and that it completely ruins the game. For some time now the sound is no longer stopped but only reduced. We don't want that. Put a button so that we can choose what we need. We do live broadcasts from Horizon on the theme of VR and news. We need to go to the headset menu to search for information on the web in the browser live to answer questions from those who follow us. We can no longer hear our colleagues speak and speak ourselves because of this bug.

I’ve dropped out of the PTC because I don’t believe I was ever completely “in it” my Meta App was V79 but my Q3 was V78 1028. Dropping back to “normal” my Meta App went back to V78 so I think it’s really more prudent to keep them “the same” I’ll just wait with the plebs for an official V79 and then be able to officially have valid complaints if any

Edit my main issue is the battery drain and the App “losing” my PC for PCVR which I use exclusively with the official Link cable because I had initial issues with my Quest 2 and of course support blamed the Cable(I couldn’t even properly set it up) anyway bought the Link cable to make it. “non issue” and frankly it’s a pretty great cable against the alternatives. Oh and I get the occasional slow charge message and I’m running of my Motherboard Type C port. It’s always kept enough power balance for me to play for hours without ever getting low battery. Now it’s  can play for an hour and it’s dead so I’ve been bouncing between the official charger and just the Type C. I don’t think there’s a huge difference in charge time for the hassle of going behind my PC to pull it, plug it in the charger then plug back into my crowded rear panel…

Enabeling PTC in the link app gives you only PTC for the link app. If you want in PTC on Quest too, you must do that in your Horizon app.

Yeah i kinda figured that out but then i didn’t even know about the dev mode switch in it either. Which funny enough stays on where I’ve seen lots of complaints about having to keep turning it on. But yeah im. actually kinda glad I wasn’t “all in” the issues are just things that would make my experience even worse than it currently is. I’m really annoyed about the battery issue and I had to try 3-4 times in my last session including a reboot to get Linl to see my PC…But apparently V79 is rolling out now so I guess it will be unavoidable

v79 .1027 general release actually installed.

Not fixed - excessively long shut down time. Meta AI assistant voice alway set to "low, steady".

Resurfaced bug (was fixed in v78): with laying down mode enabled viewpoint is much too low, close to the "virtual ground level". Makes it impossible to play games where you need to interact with objects now out of reach. The usualy "two steps back for every one step forward" from Meta.

At least "Unknown Sources" stays accessible in Navigator.

Hey Dev's... everything is fine with you?
Got v79.1027 in retail channel for my Qest3 today...

Err... what about this uminous "1027"? Got v78.1028 first which downgraded itself after one of it's repeatable updates to v78.1027... another Updates were shown with v78.1028 and v78.1030 at last, but when the're done it always shows v78.1027 again.

So now it's v79.1027 (at least beginning with the lowest of possible "Numbers" ;-) with Build  5115411.12060.520. But no release notes? With v78 there were some "hints"... but there is NOTHING for v79.

I'll repeat: Everything is fine with you?

---

OK, some expressions...

  • nothing seems to have changed so far - which could be a good thing 😁
  • PCVR with AirLink works fine in a good quality and stable
  • sometimes Apps like SkyBoxVR "hang" and couldn't be closed
(kills itself after about 10min or so?)
  • of course no new naviagtor UI...

Nothing which count for an update - as I've wrote:
This update changes nothing?

---

Funny thing to add today (2.8.)... version shows v79.1031 now and presented antother update. Thinking "oh no... not another update madness!"... install, reboot... and it stays at v79.1031, no further updates... puh.

Also updated my Quest2 to Build 5171691.9010.150 (v79.0131), which also presented an update aftewards without any information. This one also stays at the mentioned Build.

TomCgcmfc Did you also have this kind "strange behaviour" or did you know something about the retail version of v79? Any thoughts are appreciated...

Choleni  No, there aren't any...
Even if I follow your link, it shows nothing but old entries.
There is no "Blog" either... as I've wrote, there is NOTHING about v79!

I see nothing has changed over the past 6 months and we still test blindfolded.

This morning my Quest 2 said update v79.1030 was available. I downloaded and restarted. Just a blank screen and some tones like the headset used to make when power was connect (a feature that was removed). Great, has my headset been bricked?

After three or four restarts it finally starts up "normally". Checking the software update settings it says I am up to date with v79.1031! Meta can't keep their versions straight. Or maybe all the restarts were needed because it ran two updates. Who knows, certainly not Meta.

Not fixed - overly long shutdown time - five minutes or more.

Meta AI voice still stuck at "low, even" and now clicking on the edit button in Change Voice settings does nothing.  Asking the assistant to change voice does not open the voice settings window. This happened before in v78.1027 and seemed to fix itself after I reported it a number of times.

After updating my Quest 3S to PTC v79.1028, I can no longer use a USB Y cable that supports USB-PD power supply.
When I sniffer USB-PD communications, I find that communications have increased since v79. It's particularly puzzling that the HMD is requesting a VCONN Swap. This is being requested even though I'm not using a cable without an eMarker.
Please revert the USB-PD communications to the same as v78.

I've noticed that certain features, like the Meta AI assistant in Quest 3, haven't rolled out in India yet. As a user invested in cutting-edge tech, I'd love to better understand the rollout strategy and what timeline might apply here.
I'm hopeful this is a logistical or infrastructure-based decision rather than anything geopolitical. India's VR and AI community is incredibly active and innovative—we're eager to be part of this evolution.
