Controllers become completely unresponsive after idle sleep / Hand tracking force-enabled (v2.7)

Hi everyone,

Since updating my Meta Quest 3 to v2.7, I have encountered a controller connection bug that occurs with 100% consistency.

Setup & Usage Context:

I primarily use my Quest 3 for media viewing and desktop tasks (e.g., YouTube, Virtual Desktop). During these sessions, the controllers remain untouched on my desk for hours.

Symptom Details:

  • Unresponsive After Sleep: After leaving the controllers untouched for a few hours, they go into sleep mode as expected. However, touching them or pressing buttons no longer wakes them up. They remain completely unresponsive.
  • Battery Reset Fails: Removing and re-inserting the batteries does not restore the connection. The only way to recover controller functionality is to restart the headset.
  • Forced Hand Tracking: When the controllers freeze in this disconnected state, Hand Tracking automatically turns ON—even though I have explicitly toggled Hand Tracking OFF in the system settings. (I am currently using this auto-enabled hand tracking solely to navigate the power menu and restart the headset).

Conclusion:

Because this happens across multiple distinct applications (YouTube, Virtual Desktop), this appears to be a regression bug in the v2.7 system OS software rather than an individual app issue.

Has anyone else experienced this issue since v2.7, or found a solution that doesn't require a full headset restart?

Thank you for your reply and for reporting this.

I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one experiencing this issue.

I found a temporary workaround, so I wanted to share it with you.

If it disconnects, you can restore it by going to "Controllers" under the "Devices" section in Settings and selecting "Pair". Please manage to navigate to that page using either one working controller or hand tracking. Alternatively, I've confirmed that unpairing and re-pairing the affected controller via the Meta Horizon mobile app also brings it back.

As a side note, turning off "Switch between controllers and hands" in Gesture Controls can extend the time before it disconnects. Re-pairing whenever it gets disconnected—this combination should help reduce the frustration a bit.

Yes, I sm seeing the same thing on v2.7. Picking up controllers after sim racing and they are not responsive until I remove and re-insert batteries.

There's also a reddit thread where others report the same:

This never happened before.

steve_40  I linked that solution in the Reddit thread as well... seems all people just reading the thread opening, but not the replies 🤷
