Meta Horizon App (Android) Instant Crash after Update

Hello, Last night before going to sleep, I thought I'd check for new updates and quickly updated my Meta Android app. What a mistake...

I had been using the app just before, browsing the Store, everything was fine.

Two minutes later, right after the update, the app wouldn't open anymore. I immediately get a message saying the app has repeatedly stopped working. I've reinstalled the app at least 10 times, cleared the cache, restarted my phone, but nothing works. I can't use the app anymore.

I've been using the app for about five years now Quest 1, 2, and now 3 but I've never experienced anything like this.

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with Android 9. It would be great if Meta could address this problem.

  • I have the same problem; hopefully someone will give us a solution.

I see in other comments that the device needs to be updated, but my device is no longer receiving updates. Android 11

@EILinkero The app does have stability problems since at least 2 updates. It is working for me though sometimes it jitters, and I'm on Android 16 on a Samsung S25 Ultra so it might be worse on older phones. They really need to fix it. I haven't had as serious an issue but it's not acceptable that it's not running smoothly.

I've seen several posts today from people having crashes in the Android app, so it must be a bad update.

I've submitted a report through my phone app (iOS version) to tell Meta there's an issue with the Android update. Hopefully they will take note. If you're able to get the app to open, use the option in the app to report a problem.

  • Also doesn't work for me and my friends phones, I use a S9+, they use a S21. Just got myself a Q3S, and was excited to mess around, but now I have an expensive brick :D

It seems to be affecting older Android phones. Try using a newer phone or tablet, or an iPhone or iPad if you can.

Annoyingly the newest android phone/tablet i can use is my friends S21, and I don't have access to any iOS devices at all. Really hoping they fix this soon.

Tried a couple different versions and they all couldn't find the headset after a few minutes of waiting or crashed like the latest version. Thanks for trying to help, though! Will just have to wait for Meta to stop being lazy and fix their app

Well, you don't have an expensive brick, you have old phones. 😂 OK, seriously now, there is definitely a problem with the Horizon Android phone app.. I've the latest Android 16, and though it works it's buggy for me. Wait and hopefully they'll update it shortly.. I hear that the iPhone app is ok, if you have a friend with one, you could try it. I did factory reset recently and even with the buggy app it updated on Android 16° . Btw, I'm very impressed that you're keeping an S9+ going! I had a Note10+ for 6 years before it slowed down too much and had to upgrade. The S25 Ultra is a good option for you for the future if you want to stay with Samsung. The iPhone of course is another good option! Anyways, I hope you get it fixed soon. ☘️☘️🤞

  • I too am unable to launch the app on my Android 11 phone. I've tried restarting my phone, uninstalling the app, clearing the cache and storage. Nothing seems to work. If this post gets enough attention Meta might see it and fix the app.

It's unlikely that this thread will gain any traction with Meta. Contact official customer support here, choose the "chat with customer support" option and let them know there's an issue with the Horizon+ Android app crashing on older phones.

@ourlordleviathan Definitely report it through the link steve_40 posted. I reported it. I have an Android 16 device and though it's working, it's very unstable. The more people report it, the better the chance of a quick fix... 🤞🤞

Looks like a new update just dropped. I did have to clear the storage, uninstall, restart my phone, and then reinstall to get it to work.

Great! I hope it'll work for all others too.

        Thank you for the update👍

  • 9.03.2026 I still can't log in. 8.02.2026 I logged in today and it says something like "The device's SDK version must be at least 31, but it was 28.

BlaBlaMamba  seems your phone is too old?

      SDK 31 - Android 12

      SDK 28- Android  9

That's what google tells me, if I search for SDK versions.

If you still able to use your Quest, send a bug report to let Meta know about the mobile app problem.

The help pages says the Horizon app should work, if you have phone with at least Android 5...... which is obviously not the case.🤪

  • Yes, I have Android 10 on my phone, and I've sent the reports, but the mobile app only works on Android 4.4, as stated on the app's download page. There was no problem yesterday. I'll try it on my new phone with Android 15 today.

Choleni @BlaBlaMambaRussia I have Android 16 and it works but freezes and occasionally shuts down. Barely working is my experience! 😂

everything is correct, I took a phone with an Android version of 15, logged in to my account, and there were no problems. However, on a phone with an Android version of 9, I still encountered a login error, even after re-downloading the app and restarting the phone. The error remained the same.

      SDK 28 - Android 9

Yeah, seems phones below Android 12 doesn't work with the latest Horizon version.

I've sent a bug report about that issue too..... let's hope Meta will fix this soon.
