Meta Quest Link- Installation Not installing files and drivers correctly.

I need help, no matter how many times i try redownloading/reinstalling/repairing, I get this error where this "oculusclient.exe" file doesn't install in the "oculus-client" folder.
Not only that, but NO audio drivers for the oculus installs either so even if I press OK and ignore the error, when I try to use the app anyways, no sound nor mic input will play through my quest headset. And it seems meta doesn't source these audio drivers anywhere else to install them manually.
This is incredibly frustrating, i spent countless hours yesterday and today trying to find some sort of solution.
Please, if ANYONE thinks they can help me with this because I really don't want to be forced to use a separate audio headset ontop of my quest just to receive sound or use my mic.

Well I did send a msg to support, and they told me try running the setup again with firewall and antivirus turned off and when the installer opens, select "repair".
Don't forget to turn your antivirus and firewall back on again though.

Unfortunately, this did not stop the error from occurring for me, but my ability to use the app and connect my headset doesn't seem affected otherwise besides the audio issues.. But they told me that the issues with audio is a "known issue that will be fixed in a future update". So unfortunately I think all we can do is wait is wait until that update rolls out.

  • Navigate to that file path and you will find another *.exe which will update. I can't seem to get mine to connect to pc at all now though.

Unfortunately there is no other .exe file in that folder for me :(

saw a file called client.exe, sadly, launching that and trying to log in still doesn't work.

  • I have this same exact issue, **bleep** annoying and I still cannot find a fix.

The update to fix the audio was released 2 days ago.

  • This just happened to me after applying the update.

Allowed update, allowed update of drivers, restarted Windows.

Tried to launch Link said it couldn't reach Link service. Checked to see if the Oculus service was running - all ok.

Tried a fix that usually worked in the past - manually reinstall the Oculus drivers - stop the service and run oculus-driver.exe in the \oculus\support\oculus-drivers folder. Run it twice for good measure as sometimes running once doesn't work. Restart Windows but problem still exists.

Since the fix app button didn't work, downloaded the oculus-setup.exe from Meta and ran the repair. App updated clicked the "next" button and Link fires up - and immediately starts updating. Update drivers and restart computer. Click on the Meta/Oculus icon pinned on my taskbar and got the error again. Ran repair again but hangs up at the "Next" step because  it can't find the oculus-client.exe. Looked in the folder and find there is a client.exe. Click on that and Link launches. Close link and try clicking on the Meta/Oculus icon on taskbar and get the error. Try clicking "client.exe" and link launches fine.

The icon is a link to "fixer.exe" in the Oculus\support\oculus-diagnostics folder.

The problem is the "fixer.exe" - this normally checks to see if the Oculus service is installed and running and if not running starts the service before calling oculus-client/client.exe. Apparently FIXER.EXE and DLLs are hosed and don't handshake properly with the service.

Somebody screwed the pooch here. The shortcut Meta Horizon Link on the desktop links to oculus-client.exe which is client.exe. I thought renaming client.exe to Oculus-Client.exe would fix the problem but this is not the case. Restoring an older backup of fixer.ex did not help either. I looked at my backup from November and it is OculusClient.exe in older versions.

Launching from client/oculus-client.exe is  workaround however you have to have the Oculus service running first. That's a pity as I had the service startup set to manual so the service wasn't running (and applying updates in the background) until the first time I launched Link - which could be weeks apart as I rarely use link.

so basically we are screwed till they fix it? Because i uninstalled the app cause the update wouldn't work and was gonna reinstall but now it unfortunately wont even install.

      Hi,

I am having the exact same issue as you mentioned. I cant connect my headset to my PC via link. Its so incredibly annoying. You mentioned " Launching from client/oculus-client.exe is  workaround however you have to have the Oculus service running first. That's a pity as I had the service startup set to manual so the service wasn't running (and applying updates in the background) until the first time I launched Link - which could be weeks apart as I rarely use link. "

Can you clarify if this fixes the issue. i will happily do this every time if it means it will work. I cant play any PC games because of this nonsense.

Link is working fine. What is your issue connecting? Describe in more detail, please, then maybe I can help. Have you tried this:

        • For those having recent installation failures, try this workaround just released by Meta.
  • Fix the audio is usually simple:

Re-install the oculus drivers - do it twice because sometimes they don't take on one try.

Click "no" when the driver install asks to restart windows and restart windows after the second install.

After Windows restarts go into the old control panel and click on "sound" (under Hardware and Sound if in the Category view). Under the Playback tab find "Headphones - Oculus Virtual Audio Device". Right click and enable the device. Make sure it doesn't get set as the default playback device which Windows tends to do. That's it.

When updates get applied this device tends to get disabled. It's been like this for months maybe one or two years but hasn't always been the case. The more info in the app leads one to believe Meta is working on the problem but after a few months I got fed up and starting looking around in Windows when I noticed the playback device was disabled.

Now if Meta would fix having to set OpenXR manually all the time and dynamically changing the default windows playback device back and forth when connect and disconnect my headset from Link/Air Link instead of manually I might be happier. It used to do this. Virtual Desktop does this.

I had the same problem after a laptop reset due to an overheating SSD.

I contacted online support, but the agent insisted on my resetting my router (couldn't as husband was streaming a football match and I don't want a divorce!), laptop and Oculus in that order.  I did query how resetting my devices would replace a missing file from Meta's latest installation file, but they insisted I needed to do this before they could offer any further advice.

Fortunately, after I gave up and concluded the session, I remembered that the old SSD still had my full pre-reset installation, so I grabbed the 'OculusClient.exe' file from there and BINGO! everything works again.

Am I allowed to offer a copy of the file here for those who need it, as it's an official file?

  • Its likely updates they need to do for quest 3 thats breaking the software for quest 2s. Ever since the quest 3 released my quest 2 has been running much slower and some features like the link require multiple steps (Like shutting down the oculus link sever task) just to get link to work.

Maybe they should make separate installers for Quest 2 and Quest 3.

The way things are, I'm not convinced that I want to upgrade.  Their support agents can't seem to deviate from their script, even when common sense says the actions they're asking to be carried out won't fix the issue. I don't have any confidence in them being able to resolve any real issues.
