Question

Quest 3: Problems with sweat

Your headset is also advertised for workouts, but unfortunately that's not possible because sweat always occurs during workouts and apparently the devices aren't sufficiently protected against it, despite completely drying them off with microfiber cloths after use and your silicone cover etc.

It’s my 4th Quest 3 which dies after using it with ElevenTableTennis:-(

I’m in a community with many players and a lot of them have the same problems and must replace their headsets regularly because of this issue… Most die with „tracking failure“ and nothing works. The display moves with head-movement and controller are vibrating every second but aren’t tracked as well… no head and no finger or controller tracking… There are also threads on Reddit… why don’t you seal the chips inside like it is done with smartphones???

As I said in chats before. You should invite me as your product-tester. When your devices lasts for me in the long run, then it's good😉

This is a very interesting comment.

I was always wondering how the headset handled sweat during workouts.

This is how my headset died. I got "Tracking Lost" and the boot screen loop after a Supernatural Monster workout. It's amazing what 30 minutes' worth of perspiration can do to the Meta Quest 3 😓

Now, to find a facial interface that is sweatproof and can shield the device vents--if there is one.

Update on this: I was initially going to buy one of the cooling fan interfaces, but I changed my mind because of the extra battery and likelihood of poor compatibility/comfort.

Instead, I bought the Razer Facial Interface for Meta Quest 3. It doesn't have a fan for air circulation, but it has a couple of specially designed vents to dissipate heat from inside the interface while still blocking light. That and the contoured silicone gasket make all the difference: I no longer feel my headset heating up in my face, the lenses don't fog, and forehead sweat hardly enters my eyes during workouts.

I wouldn't say that the facial interface makes the headset sweatproof--I honestly can't tell if there is some sort of design trick to keep sweat from entering the device vents--but it does make it significantly more usable for longer periods and with performance-heavy apps. I'm still being precautious about exercising with my replacement headset: now I always dry off the interface when I have a chance to pause, because I am definitely not wanting to kill the replacement the same way I killed my original.

Did you find a workaround? Headband maybe? I'm receiving my replacement after killing mine with 2 months of Les Mills Body Combat VR and would prefer to avoid another return...

twISTer1979  One of these facial interfaces with an integral fan may help. And, as the fan direction can be reversed it could pull moist air out of the headset rather than blowing it over the electronics.

This does not work i got that facial interface with the fan yesterday and put it to the test today, a 30-40min session on thrill of the fight 2, one fight after another and yet my quest 3 started to flicker on the left side but i managed to turn it off in time, now when i turn it on i have a tracking issue which you can see in the image. Im Going to get another replacement which is going to be my fourth headset in 3 months. This cant keep happening, there has to be repercussions for meta or either they give out store credit to those affected or some type of compensation for all these problems.

Z4YNIE20  your headset was already on the way out before you tried the interface with fan. The good thing is that you can use it from day one on the next headset.  A more permanent solution would be to unclip the inner rubber faceplate [it's easy, it just un-clips] and apply a small bead of silicone sealant around the inside edge of the headset and round the outer edge of the lens mounts or a small bead of sealant round the outer edge of the inner faceplate and the lens clip rings.

Same problem.  I do Supernatural every morning.  I am on my third Quest3 in 5 months.  My first quit charging.  My second experienced the same tracking failure as yours.  Meta is replacing these for free but with "refurbished" ones.  It would be nice if Meta actually responded to this issue.  What are we supposed to do?

Hey there pk165271,

You make a good point that sweat should be considered in future designs!

Could we ask you to please make a post on our ideas forum about this?

I get posting this in the ideas forum, but that's for a future design.  It doesn't address the problem that hundreds (thousands?...) of us face with our current units.  In essence, all you are asking us to do is give you an idea that should have already been considered in the first place given that Meta is advertising this with fitness being a reason to buy a Quest 3.  Heck - Supernatural is a Meta product, for crying out loud!

What you are saying instead is that, instead of figuring out a solution for an existing issue that should have been considered beforehand, your solution is telling us, "we'll get you on the next one" then charging us again for a brand new unit at full price while we cross our fingers that the sweat issue was actually addressed.

Quite honestly, I'm surprised Meta hasn't been slapped with a class action lawsuit by now as stating this to be a fitness product is clearly a misrepresentation.

What Meta really should do is, when a new unit comes out that truly addresses the sweat issue, create a trade in program that will allow us to purchase a new unit at a significantly discounted price.  Should be preferably free given the inconvenience, but I'm realistic.

I have had the same experience. I am on my 4th Quest 3 in less than a year. The latest failure was also a tracking failure. Do any of the aftermarket sweat guards adequately protect the unit?

Hey MainMan68 We recommend that you use your device when playing sports in an area with a suitable temperature and that you take breaks from time to time, If Rafa Nadal can do it, so can you!

You could also leave suggestions for improvements against sweat for the following devices through this link <https://communityforums.atmeta.com>

See you at the MetaVerse!

Rafa Nadal is on his 10th quest 3….

joking aside, what an absolutely crass response to someone who has suffered multiple device failures as a result of a blatant design flaw.

I have the same problem. My oculus broke because sweat got on the glasses while playing Batman. The service said that this is a common problem, unfortunately.

Hi! I have the same issue. My 3rd quest stopped working yesterday after a session in TOFT2. What is baffling to me is the amount of threads on the subject (a couple on the meta forums including this one, and one on Reddit) It looks like it should be a major problem since a lot of people use their headsets for fitness. The waiting time to find an opponent in TOFT2 says as much. All these people aren't experiencing the same problems? If so what are we doing wrong?
