Quest 3 stuck and unable to complete boot

My Quest 3 was working fine until a couple of days ago and I use it almost daily.

On trying to turn it on yesterday I am now stuck in with the following:

  1. I see a stack Meta Horizon OS logo for a couple of seconds
  2. I see the chip icon with arrow and a green progress bar which completes
  3. I see an animated spinning Meta Horizon OS logo for maybe 30-60 seconds
  4. The screens go black, they are still powered on but not showing anything.

It never gets any further than that.

I have tried the following, none of them changes anything:

  1. Doing a hard reboot
  2. Doing a factory reset
  3. Doing a sideload of the most recent v79 update via USB, this downloads and installs fine giving no errors but the issue is still there afterwards.

I see one other thread in this forum recently which sounds like the same issue but there was no responses on that one https://communityforums.atmeta.com/discussions/OtherTroubleshooting/most-recent-update-bricked-my-quest-3/1343071

At this point I can't think of anything else to try other than to go through a warranty process, but I'd welcome anything else to try first.

  • As it isn't looking like there is anyway to fix this I've gone ahead with replacing mine. From a meta perspective my warranty expired in December 2024 and they want to charge me £340 for a replacement.

Fortunately I purchased it from a retailer in the UK (John Lewis) who offered a 2 year guarantee on it, they are shipping me a brand new replacement arriving tomorrow and as the price has dropped by about £130 since I originally bought it they are also giving me a refund of the difference!

I just hope the new one doesn't update itself and suffer the same issue.

Aside from the trouble you had.............. that's a pretty good deal!👍😁

Fingers crossed for your new headset🤞

I have the exact same problem with my Quest 3 and have tried everything.

Unfortunately I never found a solution to this, it does seem to be affecting a number of people, I collated a few reports over on this thread Why has this post about a bricked headset been locked?

To me it certainly looks like a dodgy update bricking devices but there has been no acknowledgement from Meta and no solution provided. I even tried sideloading a v81 firmware using the adb command line tool to see if going to a newer firmware would fix it but even that didn't help.

As I said in my earlier post I fortunately could still get a replacement, I picked that up yesterday, on first boot it wanted to update and after downloading the update I had a slight worry as it also went through the chip and green bar screen on reboot but unlike my previous headset it then carried on booting fine. I returned the bricked headset when picking up the new one so I'm not in a position to try/validate any other fixes now.
