The rechargeable battery is probably faulty. You could test it by putting the battery in the RIGHT controller and leaving it on the dock and see if it charges.
But that said, there's an issue with Meta rechargeable battery packs where they can be sort-of loose and not connect properly:

Try a tiny bit of paper folded a few times and place between battery cover and battery. I've only used it a few times yet but it seems to have helped.
But the simple solution to get you back on track would be just to use normal disposable batteries, at least until you can update the controller firmware 🙂.
