Voice Controls - unable to turn off

Hello everyone,

I was messing around in the accessibility settings and decided to try out Voice Controls. I got a download prompt, clicked through it, and admittedly spammed the toggle a bit to get it to turn on.

It finally turned on, but now I'm stuck with a really annoying bug:

There is a permanent purple circle with a white microphone icon floating in the top right of my FOV (looks a bit like the red recording indicator).

The voice commands don't actually work at all (I'm in Germany, so dictation/AI features have never worked for me anyway).

The worst part: I can't turn it off. The Voice Control toggle/slider in the settings is completely unresponsive and stuck in the ON position.

I've already tried rebooting the headset, but the floating icon is still there and the toggle remains stuck.

Does anyone know a fix or a way to force-disable this accessibility feature? Having this icon constantly floating in my view is super distracting.

Thanks!

  • Try toggling it off. Then power off (not reboot) the headset using the Power menu (5 second button press). Wait a couple of minutes then power on and see it it's fixed. Otherwise, factory reset.

      Hi, thanks for the suggestion!

I gave that a try, but unfortunately, it didn't work. The toggle is still completely unresponsive, and I really want to avoid doing a factory reset right now.

I am currently in contact with the Meta Support team via email. They actually seem very approachable and committed to helping me solve this issue.

In the meantime, I've found a rather messy workaround: I manually uninstalled the "Text-to-Speech" app. Doing this successfully gets rid of the floating microphone icon and disables Voice Controls. However, it causes a crazy new issue: The system is now stuck in an endless loop trying to redownload the Text-to-Speech app. It constantly opens the Meta Store to the app's page, but since it's probably not a publicly listed app, the Store just crashes, only to immediately reopen and try again.

To stop this crash loop, I had to go into the internal Android settings of the Quest and completely disable the Meta Store app. It's obviously far from ideal, and the whole loop starts all over again after every reboot. It's a bit of a disaster right now.

I've enrolled in the Public Test Channel (PTC) and am really hoping this bug gets fixed in an upcoming update. I'll make sure to post an update in this thread as soon as the problem is officially resolved. Thanks again!

Respect to all brave people fighting with bugs in PTC.

But to be honest, somebody who decides using PTC, should be prepared that he has to factory reset his headset more or less often. 🤷‍♀️

  • I also turned it on and now I can't even control my headset via hands or controllers 😣 Did you find out how to turn on controller control? It shows controller cursor line, but I cant click on items.

Oh yeah, you can use your volume buttons as input :) There should also be a drop down menu to select right/left controller as input instead of gaze. ;)

Wow 🙂 I used volume buttons and navigated to accessibility settings page. Then I turned voice commands off and everything works well. The voice command icon also disappeared. Thanks, you saved me from factory reset 🙂
