Quest 3 WiFi connection takes down internet

Hi folks. This may sound like a weird one, it does to me. But I am a fairly experienced IT professional (retired) and I cannot figure this one out. I have a pretty standard router in my house (TP-Link AX1800). There are lots of different things on my property that use the WiFi and all of them work perfectly fine all the time, unless my ISP goes down.

Now, enter the Quest 3. I used to use the Quest 3 connected to a different WiFi on an access point router. Then life got busy and I did nothing with the Quest 3 for weeks. However, it was plugged in. I do not know exactly when the problem started.

Here's the problem: I can have many different devices on my home network just humming along. Then, as soon as the Quest 3 connects to the WiFi, all devices in the network lose their internet access.

If I turn off the Quest 3 WiFi, the network will return but it will take a while, I am guessing because it is probably reconnecting with my ISP, or something like that.

Does anyone know anything that could help me know what's going on? I know how to get into my router and I have checked all the available settings. As stated, everything else works perfectly.

I opened a support ticket with Meta but I don't know how long that will take or whether they will even address it with me.

I should add that the headset has no problem connecting to my iPhone WiFi hotspot. So, I know it's either something in the TP-Link router configuration, or something at the ISP. I have not contacted the ISP yet.

I even had a brand new TP-Link BE9700 WiFi 7 router so I set it up and same result. That makes me think it's the headset. I changed mac addressing to Use Device Mac on the headset. And yes, I did a factory reset of the headset, and when everything was re-initialized, the problem still exists. I am lost.

Any help, suggestions, I am all ears. I can't think of anything else to check.

Well that's a new one my friend! Have you checked your bandwidth availability? Has the Quest been the straw that broke the camels back and is bringing everything crashing down? Your router is Wifi 7 so it can handle a lot more traffic. If you try switching off everything and just connect the Quest, then try adding your other devices one by one and see what happens. Maybe it's not the Quest, just one device too many. Just a suggestion. Let's know how you get on and good luck! 🤞🤞

  • I'm not familiar with Wifi 7 (it looks like Quest 3 might not even support it), but I remember some people needing to turn off the band splitting feature (to not split out the 6 GHz band) to get their Quest 3 to work on their routers. Also, the Quest needs to be on the 5Ghz wifi SSID.

  • I am not trying to use WiFi 7. I just switched to a new WiFi 7 router to see if I had the same problem I had trying to access WiFi 5 on the other router. So far the Quest 3 has no problem with a guest network and no problem with connecting to my phone's wifi hotspot. However, can't connect it to my regular home network without everything in the house connected to the router losing internet. So strange. I am not hopeful that Meta will help me with this but I guess you never know :-(.

  • I stand corrected: The guest network was working but only for about 5-10 minutes, then it lost internet. So the only network it will stay up on is the wifi hotspot on my phone.

Do you have a lot of devices connected to your wifi (maybe lots of smart light bulbs and stuff)? I think there is a limit to how many devices some routers can support, in practice. You could try removing a few unnecessary devices and see if it makes a difference. If possible, take some devices off the 5Ghz and put them on the 2.4Ghz instead.

I do have the exact same problem with TP-Link Archer C80. I have tried every setting possible.

Try disabling QoS settings in the router, it might be killing all the other devices when the Quest is connected. Also try disabling IPv6 and see if the problem goes away with only IPv4 enabled.

  • I have about 15 devices connected to the router. However, many of those devices either transmit data very seldom or transmit very low amounts of data. Keep in mind this router can support three TV's streaming movies at the same time (although only happens when testing the network). The load is not heavy at all. And I can get over 900Mbit download and 180Mbit upload speeds.

rmgnotary did you make any progress in solving your internet issue?

Also, what country are you in, and are you using a VPN?

I’m in the us. Was not using vpn. Never solved it. Sold the headset and bought a pimax crystal light. Not wireless but no problems using and much more clear graphics than the quest.

I too have the same issue with my Asus router. Did you ever arrive at a solution? Thanks in advance/

Never resolved it. Sold the headset and bought a pimax crystal light. Not wireless but beautiful image quality and no technical issues.

  • Hey, What is the status of your problem? I have the exact same problem.

  • After logging in to the Meta quest 3 even with the new router. After a while and I don't even have to download anything. The headset just has to connect to the wifi network of the router and the router starts having problems. If I unplug the LAN cable for my PC from the router and connect it straight to the ISP port on my floor the internet has no problems. The only resolution is to factory reset the router, or I have tried something, and it worked to change the Mac of my router.
