Will the Quest 3 ever support Wi-Fi 7?

Hi,

I've seen contradictory information regarding WiFi 7 support on Quest 3. I'm currently testing WiFi 7 router and it seems Quest 3 connects in WiFi 6 mode.

Is WiFi 7 something that will be enabled with firmware update or hardware limits it to 6/6e?

  • Hey there, Pawnu! We don't have information yet as to whether there will be any up coming updates that will enable Wi-Fi 7.

However, we think it's a great idea that you are welcome to share on our ideas forum here. It's a great place were innovation is encouraged!

If you have any additional questions, please let us know!

Sure, because WiFi7 is backwards compatible. But your Quest 3 communicates using Wi-Fi 6E instead.

  • Funny how statement about not knowing the answer has been marked as solution 😄

I checked because I'm curious as well.

The Quest 3 can't and thus WILL NEVER support WiFi 7. While the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 indeed CAN support WiFi 7, the WiFi Qualcomm WCN6856 Network adapter inside the Quest 3 CAN'T. And replacing a soldered chip on the board of the Q3 is not worth the effort.

You can see the the WCN6856 in the teardown here on the right: https://youtu.be/liVll-GVF3Q?t=226

      The supported Protocols are: IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.2, IEEE 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6E)

Your Link also refers to Intel Laptops and Intel Chips, which do support WiFi 7. And they talk about making it easier and better to connect to Intel Laptops/Chips with WiFi 7 to put the Quest 3 to a separate less crowded channel thus increasing performance/stability.
As WiFi 7 is backwards compatible, the Quest 3 will communicate using WiFi 6e with the Intel WiFi 7 Chip.
