Quest 3 Controllers are not aligned in game?

  • I’ve noticed that in a lot of games, (banter, bigscreen, pavlov, breachers) the hands don’t line up with where my controllers are pointing, instead they point outwards. This is not an issue with the quests menu ui, they line up fine when im navigating quest menus. It is in game where this appears.

NOT A SOLUTION - MARKING FOR VISABILITY

Hey guys! I wanted to let you know that I've been talking with our engineers for a while about this issue. They recommend that you reach out to support so you can see what replacement options might be available for you. I know this is not the ideal solution you were hoping for, but this may be able to help with re-aligning the controllers for your Quest 3's. If you follow this link, then follow the steps that best describe this issue, and you'll be able to send an email, chat, or WhatsApp message to support.

Hi all!

I only recently upgraded from a Rift S to a Quest 3 and have this same issue. I'm currently getting the 'runaround' from tech support via email.

This is clearly a design flaw in the controller. The top panel, to which the default 'forward/pointing' angle aligns to is NOT squarely aligned with the grip, so when most users grab a controller in their natural pose, the top panel gets slightly rotated anti-clockwise, and thus the 'forward' position gets turned slightly outwards by 10 - 15 degrees as a result.

No such issue existed with my Rift S

I am truly shocked this issue has not been addressed by Meta even after what seems like 2 years of users complaining about it!

If I'd known this issue existed I would NOT have upgraded from my Rift which I've already sold! 😞

To tech support: WHY haven't the developers included an option to adjust the default 'forward' pointing angle? It would take them probably less than 1 day to implement such an option. After all, we can adjust the Thumbstick forward angle!

The headset works perfectly otherwise.

Once again, this is a *DESIGN FLAW*, not a software issue, but, it could be easily fixed by implementing a means to apply a default rotation offset.

I've included pics from another user to show the issue. The RED lines are where 'forward' should be, the BLUE lines are where they are by default.

I've also included a video showing the issue I made myself using my hand and a straw. 🙂

Thanks for reading!

To be honest, I don’t understand why not a single major VR YouTuber has brought up this issue. They’re testing all kinds of controller straps and didn’t notice this? That’s weird. I noticed it right after tightening the straps on my hands. People considering buying the Quest 3 should definitely be aware of this.

Yeah that is weird. As a reviewer I would have noted the issue up straight away.

I can't believe it got past quality control/testing when in development! Did everyone there have twisted wrists and not notice?

I can't comprehend why the top, round panel isn't squarely aligned with the grip, kinda 'T' shaped, it's shaped more like '7'.

With the Ideas forum gone, the MVP program on life support and no community manager engaging with the community (I'm not even sure off the top of my head who the current one is), I don't know how likely it is for design complaints to make it through the support filter to the devs.

A better way might be to target places like UploadVR, RoadToVR.

I was hopeful when I found out Vertigo Games was making Metro Awakening, since they included gun calibration in Arizona Sunshine 2. Sadly no, they left that out. 😞

I wonder if someone knows of a good way to reach out to some larger vr youtubers and see if they’ll cover it in one of their videos? I don’t think meta will do anything unless it gains some visibility

I've been back & forth with Meta support all day, and they've finally agreed to escalate the issue with their 'Senior Specialist' team, and will get back to me in 3 - 5 days.

They wanted me to send my headset back for replacement, but before doing that I asked them to open a brand new Quest 3 headset and check it out themselves to see if the issue exists with that! 🙂

I'll let you people know what comes of that when they get back to me.

Still talking to meta “support”. This was their last message after me sending them all the links of other users having the same problem

”Unfortunately, we do not have developers on our team who can make adjustments to game features. The best way to address this would be to continue reaching out to the game’s development team through the same channels you’ve previously used. They would be the most appropriate resource for suggestions or potential updates.

We recommend checking the official support pages, community forums, or any available contact options provided by the developers for further assistance. “

Sounds like they don’t care to do anything about it

This shows whoever you were talking to doesn't understand the problem. (Or might be a bot, who knows these days) Meta broke compatibility with all of their previous headsets by changing how the orientation of Touch Pro and Touch Plus controllers are returned by the OS.

The one thing we can hope for is that future games made for the Quest 3 and 3S will take this into account and they adjust the transform of the controller to compensate. (Incredibly easy in Unity, probably in Unreal too but I don't use it)

PCVR could do this too, even SteamVR games could detect Quest 3/3S and adjust the aim, but how many PCVR devs are even aware? If they play test on a Quest 2 and assume Quest 3 works the same, it won't be obvious.

I feel like I’m losing my mind. I keep telling myself it’s a learning curve and I have to shoot two feet down and 5 feet to the left to hit anything. It’s kind of a miserable experience.
For comparison I hopped back on a friend’s quest 2 and it’s perfectly aligned.

it’s a system level problem, not just bonelab and saints/sinners. You can even notice it in the meta first encounters MR demo

My friend (who’s played vr before) said it’s so jarring it just makes me put it down after 10 min and want to do something else. It’s like a stormtrooper training sim that makes your real aim worse”

You guys were right, in the end they acknowledge they have no wayto contact developer support and closed my case.

They told me to try these forums, lol! So I opened a new thread here:

https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Get-Help/Q3-controller-alignment-off-Not-fixed-after-2yrs-How-to-contact/td-p/1314590

Maybe if everyone who has the issue made their own new thread, they're soon see just how many people are affected by it, and so something about it?

We'll see!

I also opened a new thread, everyone should do it and swarm the forum, maybe then they will start to listen. (btw this was my last meta headset)

Such a shame this is being ignored. I was about to finally buy a quest 3, but this is a dealbreaker, ill wait for a better option from a company that has both its controllers and its priorities in alignment.

What was the solution?

Yep, still an issue.

I haven't tested any new games to see if they compensate for the bad design, I stopped buying Quest games after Metro Awakening was too annoying to play with the guns aiming wrong.

These days the only VR games I do on my Quest 3 are Pistol Whip (has aim adjustment in-game), Elite Dangerous (no controllers needed) and Euro Truck Sim 2 (no controllers needed). It's so jarring to go from Pistol Whip back to the Quest UI where the aim is different.

Meta really should add a calibration to the settings UI. That way it would be consistent across games made for the two standards: handle aligned (Rift CV1, Rift-S, Go, Quest 1, Quest 2) and sloped top aligned (Quest Pro, Quest 3, Quest 3s).

But Meta is moving away from VR to focus on AI, so my expectations are pretty low for new features.

Meta 3 has been abandonware since they introduced it.  They do not read these forums or try to fix any of these issues. I'm convinced of it after pre ordering the Meta 3 and reporting this shortly afterward.  This has been a major disappointment to me and my faith in this company.  I've followed this thread since its creation.  There have been 2 Meta bots that randomly inserted some reply that sounded half baked.  There has been plenty of examples and possible solutions given here.  They simply don't care enough to put an option to move the aim manually to the position you want it in that would resolve everything.

I have been lurking this thread for 2 years with the same problem. The lack of action by Meta is absolutely astounding, I will never be purchasing another Meta device.

I really wish they'd at least add a Pistol Whip style controller adjustment (pitch, yaw, roll, maybe offset too) to the OS. Not only would it fix the issue for all games for those of us that notice the problem, but would also help people using things like gun stock controller mounts.

The first thing I'm checking when I get my Steam Frame is how the controllers aim.
